Jean Christophe Garnier

Wines from Domaine Jean-Christophe Garnier: buy at the best price

In Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, at the heart of the Anjou Noir, in the Loire Valley, Jean-Christophe Garnier ("JC") embodies one of the most discreet and most respected references in French natural wine. A former sommelier trained with the Parcé brothers in Banyuls and with Mark Angeli at the Ferme de la Sansonnière, he settled in 2002 on a few hectares of old vines planted on schist, gneiss and granite. Today at the helm of approximately 8 to 10 hectares farmed organically, without additives or added sulphur since 2016, he produces single-vineyard Chenins of great mineral purity (Bézigon, La Roche, Rouchefert, Les Justices, 13 Vents) and juicy, indulgent reds (Les Tailles, Gamay-Aunis), hailed by Richard Leroy and Stéphane Bernaudeau as the work of a truly great winemaker.

History of Domaine Jean-Christophe Garnier

The adventure of Domaine Jean-Christophe Garnier begins with a passion born in the restaurant dining room. Originally from Brittany, Jean-Christophe Garnier first spent several years working as a sommelier in various prestigious restaurants. His proximity to Anjou led him to enrol in a viticultural school, where he was placed as an apprentice with Mark Angeli at the legendary Ferme de la Sansonnière. It was this encounter that changed everything: Mark Angeli immediately encouraged him to launch himself as a winemaker, following a radically natural approach. Jean-Christophe completed his training with a placement at the Parcé brothers' Domaine de la Rectorie in Banyuls, and obtained a BPREA (Brevet Professionnel Responsable d'Exploitation Agricole).

In 2002, he settled in Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay with very limited means, on 2.3 hectares of Chenin Blanc, aided by his father who was retiring that same year. At the time, Anjou was far from the excitement it enjoys today: the region was known for its Bonnezeaux and Coteaux du Layon, its sweetish and sterile-filtered Anjou blancs, and its rustic reds. JC made the radical choice of full natural winemaking, and even declassified his wines to Vin de Table from 2006 onwards, at a time when such a gesture was still unique. From 2016, he definitively abandoned all sulphur additions. Today, JC is cited by the great names of Anjou such as Richard Leroy and Stéphane Bernaudeau among the very greatest winemakers, despite his discretion and his reasonable prices, which have earned him the absolute loyalty of his followers.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Jean-Christophe Garnier

The domaine now extends over approximately 8 to 10 hectares of vines, of which 7 to 9 hectares are in production, located in Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay at the heart of the Anjou Noir. This appellation is distinguished from Anjou Blanc by its soils derived from the Massif Armoricain, composed essentially of schist, gneiss and granite, in contrast to the limestone soils of the neighbouring Saumurois. This geological specificity gives Chenin Blanc a sharp mineral signature and a saline freshness that are the hallmark of the domaine. Several emblematic plots make up the vineyard: Bézigon (1.3 ha on very well-drained old eroded schist), La Roche / Clos de la Roche (1 ha of very old vines), Rouchefert, Les Justices and 13 Vents (more recently acquired plots).

The grape varieties are divided almost equally between whites and reds. Chenin Blanc is the only white variety cultivated, covering half of the domaine's surface. The other half is home to the Loire's historic red varieties: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grolleau, Pineau d'Aunis and Gamay. JC is also interested in hybrid varieties, which he regards as an interesting avenue in the face of successive frost events. Viticulture is rigorously organic. JC constantly seeks to bring life to the soils: he uses green manure cover crops, carries out minimal ploughing and continuously reflects on the different types of pruning best suited to the vineyard. A meticulous approach that is felt in every cuvée.

Vinifications at Domaine Jean-Christophe Garnier

In the cellar, Jean-Christophe Garnier practises deeply non-interventionist winemaking, in the tradition of the great natural winemakers of Anjou. For the whites, the Chenin is pressed directly in JC's basket press, over slow pressing cycles of 2 to 3 days. Fermentations are conducted solely with the indigenous yeasts native to the grapes, without any additions. The wines are then aged in containers carefully chosen according to the cuvée: fibre tanks, foudres, conical tanks or amphorae. JC favours minerality, tension and the expression of terroir, in a sharp and precise style, the very opposite of sweet or oak-driven Chenin.

For the reds, JC opts for short whole-cluster macerations, in an infusion style that favours fruit, delicacy and drinkability, rather than concentration or excessive extraction. Some of the reds are produced using carbonic or semi-carbonic maceration, sometimes blended with a portion of pressed juice aged in tank. No fining, no filtration, and no added sulphur since the 2016 vintage (with exceptions for a few more delicate vintages). This philosophy produces crystalline wines with a sharp, evident minerality in the whites, and drinkability and delicacy in the reds, in a very personal style at deliberately accessible prices.

The cuvées of Domaine Jean-Christophe Garnier

Bézigon : signature single-vineyard cuvée, crafted from 100% Chenin Blanc sourced from a 1.3-hectare plot located on the lieu-dit Bézigon, on old, highly draining eroded schist. Vinified without additions, aged in various containers (fibre tanks, foudres) and bottled without filtration. Brilliant robe, mineral and deep nose, taut, rich, broad, frank palate with a stony character and the sharp minerality typical of the domaine. A great Chenin from the Anjou Noir, with an unmistakable signature.

La Roche / Clos de la Roche : single-vineyard cuvée from the Clos de la Roche, a plot of approximately 1 hectare planted with old Chenin vines (up to 70 years old today) on ancient schist. Slowly pressed in a basket press over 2 to 3 days, vinified without additions. Pale golden robe, deep and mineral nose with notes of white fruits, flowers and chalk, dense, deep, structured palate with a long, saline finish. The absolute reference of the domaine, a Fine Wine of terroir capable of very fine ageing.

Rouchefert : another single-vineyard Chenin cuvée, sourced from the lieu-dit Rouchefert. Vinified in the same natural and minimalist spirit, revealing the singularity of the terroir. A precise and straight expression, with a marked saline texture and crystalline freshness.

Les Justices : recently acquired single-vineyard cuvée, crafted from 100% Chenin Blanc sourced from the Les Justices plot. A still-confidential cuvée that extends the domaine's parcel mosaic and expresses its own nuance of the Angevin schists.

13 Vents : new Chenin cuvée in the lineage of La Roche, sourced from a plot recently integrated into the domaine. A wine of substantial volume, with depth and structure, that surprises with its profundity and ageing potential. A cuvée to follow closely, already acclaimed by enthusiasts.

Bézigon & Co : blended cuvée from the domaine's principal Chenin plots (notably La Roche, Bézigon, Rouchefert), produced in certain vintages (such as 2023) when the harvest is sufficiently abundant. Aged in stainless steel or concrete tanks, preserving the freshness and purity of the Chenin Blanc. An immediate, straight and precise cuvée at a particularly attractive price. A real gem, as enthusiasts say.

Les Tailles : signature red cuvée, crafted from a blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, combining juice from whole-cluster carbonic maceration and press juice aged in tank. Ruby robe, fruity and fresh nose, juicy, moreish, balanced palate with a supple tannic structure. A perfect everyday opener, to enjoy without hesitation or to cellar for greater pleasures.

Pineau d'Aunis : single-varietal red cuvée of Pineau d'Aunis, sometimes blended with a little Gamay. Light robe, nose with the peppery notes characteristic of the variety, light, thirst-quenching palate with a spiced finish. A young red wine, ideal as an aperitif or with summer cuisine.

Gamay-Aunis (or Grolleau Gamay Aunis) : gourmand red cuvée, a blend of Gamay, Grolleau and Pineau d'Aunis, aged approximately 8 months in fibre tanks. Clear ruby robe, expressive nose of red fruits and spices, juicy, fresh, thirst-quenching palate. The best of Gamay and Pineau d'Aunis assembled by the magician JC, an absolute glou-glou wine that is near-impossible to stop drinking within minutes.

Les Nouettes : négociant cuvée crafted by JC from fruit purchased from a neighbouring winegrower farming organically, on soils almost identical to those of the domaine. Vinified and aged according to the same principles as the domaine cuvées, without additions or added sulphites. A cuvée that extends JC's commitment and allows him to share his philosophy on a wider scale.

La Roche-Bézigon : a rare blend of the domaine's two emblematic Chenin plots, produced in certain vintages. An aromatic and fragrant cuvée that marries the sharp minerality of Bézigon with the depth of La Roche, in a unique expression highly sought after by enthusiasts.
