History of Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils

The history of Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils has its roots in the 17th century. A Muzard is recorded as a winegrower as early as 1645, through a grape purchase deed concluded with a négociant house in Beaune. Over the centuries, the family built a solid viticultural heritage in Santenay, passed down from father to son over ten generations. In the 1960s, Lucien Muzard, the father of Claude and Hervé, profoundly restructured the domaine by gradually acquiring plots at a time when Burgundian land was still accessible. Alongside his wife Paule, he gave his sons the opportunity to work today on a magnificent heritage of old vines.

In the 1990s, Claude and Hervé joined their father at the domaine, following their training at the viticultural lycée in Beaune and several enriching experiences elsewhere. In 1995, they took over the running of the estate and made a major change: they gradually moved away from selling in bulk to négociants to focus on estate bottling under their own label. The domaine grew from 2 to over 20 hectares, gradually incorporating plots in Pommard, Meursault, Chassagne, Puligny and Maranges. Since 2019, Capucine, Claude's daughter, has brought her own sensibility, notably introducing a greater proportion of whole clusters in the red wines depending on the vintage.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils

The heart of the Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils vineyard is located in Santenay, where the domaine concentrates the greater part of its 20 hectares. Here one finds a superb collection of Premiers Crus among the most renowned in the village (Clos des Mouches, Clos de Tavannes, La Maladière, Les Gravières, Clos Faubard and Beauregard), complemented by remarkable village-level wines such as the Champs Claude cuvée, sourced from vines planted in the 1920s. Over the years, the domaine has broadened its range of terroirs by establishing itself in Pommard, Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Maranges, as well as in Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru through a confidential négociant activity.

The soils are typically Burgundian — clay-limestone and clay-marl — with limestone rock breaking through to the surface in places. The vines, whose average age exceeds 60 years and reaches over 70 years for certain plots, are pruned using the Royat cordon method. Since 2005, Claude and Hervé Muzard have completely abandoned herbicides and adopted methods inspired by organic farming, sometimes enriched with biodynamic touches (without seeking certification). The soil is ploughed, and the vines are de-budded, raised, leaf-stripped and aerated. Harvesting is entirely manual, followed by meticulous sorting in the cellar, ensuring optimal quality of the grapes entering the vat room.

Winemaking at Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils

In the cellar, Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils favours a traditional Burgundian approach, modernised by a few measured technical touches. The grapes are never crushed. Depending on the cuvée and the vintage, a variable proportion of whole-cluster harvest is retained (generally around 30%, sometimes more since Capucine's arrival), bringing freshness, structure and aromatic complexity. Fermentations are initiated by indigenous yeasts naturally present on the berries, in wooden or concrete vats, at controlled temperatures. Macerations generally last 15 to 20 days.

After draining, the free-run and press wines are blended and transferred to Burgundian barrels (228 litres) from the Damy cooperage in Meursault, with a light toast. The proportion of new oak varies from 10 to 25% depending on the cuvée and vintage, with some also spending time in large oak casks to preserve the purity of the fruit. Ageing lasts approximately 12 months, sometimes longer for the Premiers Crus. The whites are fermented and aged in barrels, which enhances their volume and balance, in the grand Burgundian style. This precise and carefully crafted signature has won over sommeliers at Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as critics from the Revue du Vin de France and Jasper Morris.

The cuvées of Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils

The Bourgogne Rouge is the domaine's entry-level wine, crafted from Pinot Noir grown on regional plots. A fresh palate, aromas of blackcurrant and red fruits, fine and well-integrated tannins — a delicious and approachable generic Burgundy, true to the house style.

The Maranges is a delightful cuvée from the neighbouring commune, counted among the domaine's pleasure cuvées. A Pinot Noir with vibrant fruit and a supple texture, this modestly age-worthy wine is ideally enjoyed between two and five years.

The Santenay Vieilles Vignes is an emblematic village-level cuvée. Sourced from three assembled plots (Chassagne, village centre, Maranges) planted with Pinot Noir over 60 years old, it seduces with its deliciousness, freshness, fine texture and pure fruit, in a fresh and fruity style of great drinkability.

The Santenay Champs Claude Vieilles Vignes is sourced from vines planted in the 1920s. This impressive cuvée combines a delicately toasted nose, deep fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry), a silky and smoky palate and great length, in a style that sometimes recalls the neighbouring Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot.

The Santenay 1er Cru La Maladière Rouge is sourced from an exposed hillside overlooking Santenay. The wine offers beautiful aromatic complexity with notes of pepper, blackcurrant and strawberry, along with a lovely tannic structure and a mineral elegance typical of the climat.

The Santenay 1er Cru Beauregard is a thoroughbred Premier Cru, marked by aromas of ripe dark fruits, liquorice and gentle spices. A dense palate, firm yet silky tannins and a persistent finish — a wine built for ageing, true to the full-bodied style of the appellation.

The Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravières is one of the domaine's great Premiers Crus. A powerful and full-bodied wine with a dense texture and a clean tannic backbone, this is a Pinot Noir built for ageing and destined to develop elegantly over the years.

The Santenay 1er Cru Clos Faubard is an explosive and flavourful cuvée. Sourced from 1.83 hectares of approximately 35-year-old Pinot Noir planted on clay-limestone soil near the forest, this climat delivers a remarkable texture, vibrant fruit on the palate and infectious freshness — often cited as a favourite by enthusiasts.

The Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Mouches is one of the domaine's flagship wines. Sourced from 1.6 hectares, this structured and thoroughbred Premier Cru offers great concentration, a remarkable length on the palate and impeccable balance. A cuvée acclaimed by critics for its depth and ageing potential.

The Santenay 1er Cru Clos de Tavannes is the domaine's longstanding favourite. A supple, round and early-drinking Pinot Noir, endowed with juicy fruity flavours and a fine mineral backbone, it can be enjoyed young or left patiently in the cellar to fully reveal itself.

The Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge is sourced from the estate's family-owned plots within the appellation. An elegant Pinot Noir, marked by pure fruit, a delicate tannic structure and aromatic finesse, it brilliantly completes the domaine's red wine range. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée is particularly sought after among the micro-cuvées.

The Pommard is a Burgundian classic reinterpreted by the domaine. A full-bodied, dense wine marked by aromas of dark fruits and liquorice, endowed with a solid tannic structure and a great capacity for ageing.

The Santenay Blanc is a round, fresh Chardonnay crafted from village-level plots within the appellation. Notes of white fruits and flowers, a taut and saline finish — it is one of the domaine's pleasure cuvées, ideal as an aperitif or with seafood.

The Santenay 1er Cru La Maladière Blanc is an elegant and mineral Chardonnay, sourced from the same hillside as the eponymous red cuvée. A taut palate, aromas of white fruits and flint, a precise and persistent finish.

The Meursault Les Meix Chavaux is a refined, taut Chardonnay with a crystalline texture. This age-worthy cuvée, aged in barrels with restraint, expresses the full nobility of Burgundy's great white wines, with an ample palate underpinned by a sharp minerality.

The Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc is a village-level cuvée representative of the queen appellation for whites on the Côte de Beaune. A complex nose of white fruits, almond and toasted hazelnut, an ample, fresh and balanced palate, with perfectly integrated oak.

The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Blanc is one of the domaine's finest whites. Sourced from this renowned Premier Cru, it unfolds a generous texture, aromas of ripe yellow fruits, honey and gentle spices, supported by a fine mineral tension and a long, saline finish.

The Puligny-Montrachet is a refined, elegant and taut Chardonnay, sourced from village-level plots within the appellation. Aromatic purity, pronounced salinity and a fine ageing potential define this sought-after cuvée for lovers of great Burgundy whites.

The Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is the domaine's white gem, sourced from a confidential négociant activity. This iconic Grand Cru offers a dense, rich texture, exceptional aromatic concentration (ripe white fruits, honey, hazelnut, flint), an incandescent mineral backbone and a virtually infinite ageing potential, in the grand tradition of Burgundy's most prestigious Chardonnays.
