La Mission Haut Brion: the equal of the "Premier Grand Cru Classé"
La Mission Haut Brion is a celebrated domaine de the Pessac-Léognan appellation in the Bordeaux region, extending over some thirty hectares of gravelly soil with a clay-limestone subsoil. With a grape variety distribution of Cabernet Sauvignon (48%), Merlot (45%) and Cabernet Franc (7%), and an average vine age of 25 years, 108,000 bottles are produced each year, of which 36,000 are "La Chapelle de la Mission", its second wine. And since 2009, the estate has produced a white wine named La Mission Haut Brion Blanc.
La Mission Haut Brion has had many owners since its creation in 1540, but its history truly begins in 1682 when the de Lestonnac family (creators of the vineyard) bequeathed the domaine aux priests of the mission (or Lazarists) in the 17th century. In charge of the vineyard until the Revolution, when it was confiscated from them, the priests dedicated themselves to the development of the estate, to improving the quality of the wine and to building its reputation. In 1821, after passing through many hands, Celestin Chiapella, a prominent shipowner from New Orleans, acquired it and contributed to its international rise. An objective later pursued by the Woltners for more than 60 years.
Since 1983, the estate has belonged to the Dillon family, who also own Château Haut Brion. They have succeeded in giving La Mission Haut Brion a new style, establishing it as the equal of the "Premier Grand Cru Classé". The profile is now more approachable, with more Merlot than before (45%) and a greater proportion of new oak ageing. As a result, this new style may no longer offer the same ageing potential as before, but retains a significant keeping potential in keeping with its standing. Like Château Haut Brion, La Mission Haut Brion excels in lesser years.
