Whether you are a private individual or a professional, a collector or a complete novice, you may one day wish to part with some of the grand crus in your possession and sell your wines online.
Selling your wine cellar, or at least part of it, can prove to be a good solution: you will be able to enjoy significant capital gains on the sale of your bottles. However, knowing the value or the rating of a wine, and having an estimate of your wine cellar, is not always an easy task.
When one wishes to estimate the price of a wine, whether with the aim of selling one's cellar or simply to better understand one's assets, it may seem that its value depends solely on its quality and age. Yet today, much like the art market, numerous factors contribute to the price of a wine:
- the reputation of the producer and the possible rarity of their production,
- The reputation of the wine in question (its cuvée or its appellation) and its vintage,
- The score or rating given by a renowned critic,
- Demand, particularly when it is global and is the result of the above criteria.
Several options are available to you to estimate your wines:
- If you are knowledgeable, you can easily turn to specialist websites such as Wine Searcher, which offer regularly updated ratings. However, these are not always meaningful, particularly for rare and old wines that require in-depth market knowledge for an accurate estimation of your bottles' prices.
- Auctions are also an option for obtaining the price of your old vintages. However, please be aware: while the auctioneer is able to provide a correct estimate of your wines, you should bear in mind that your grand crus, if they find a buyer (which is not always the case), will only return between 60 and 70% of the estimated price. Indeed, a seller's commission is applied, which can reach up to 30%, and a buyer's commission of around 20%. Furthermore, the return of wines that do not find a buyer will always be entirely at your expense.
- The best solution available to you remains to turn to specialists in the buying and selling of old wines and rare vintages, such as Vins & Millésimes. Indeed, through our expertise, we are able to provide a valuation of your wines within 24 hours and offer you a firm offer under the best market conditions, with immediate payment, in order to purchase your cellar. You will thus be assured of a correct estimation of the value of your wines and will be spared the stress and uncertainty of an auction: we take care of everything.
