Barolo and Barbaresco

TASTING REPORT

An Oenoschool tasting with Italian airs! Discover the tasting report of May 9, 2016 on the Barolo Barbaresco theme. The opportunity to deepen your knowledge of Italian wines, particularly these two emblematic appellations of the Italian vineyard!

  • Barbaresco "Montestefano" Produttori del Barbaresco 2011 **

A floral nose with notes of black fruits and graphite. The palate is rather light with acidity and marked but pleasant tannins. A nice digestible wine, which tastes well today but lacks depth and matter.  

  • Barbaresco "Asili" Produttori del Barbaresco 2011 ***  

On a more reputed terroir than Montestefano, this wine is quite close to it aromatically but with significantly more matter to balance the tannins and acidity. It therefore also has more aging potential.  

  • Barolo "Villero" Giuseppe Mascarello 2008 ****

Very light robe with an acescent, floral, animal nose. The palate is delicate but relatively concentrated and of remarkable length, a wine in a traditional style but relatively approachable today.  

  • Barolo "Via Nuova" Chiara Boschis 1999 ***  

This lovely underestimated vintage produces a very open wine today (oaky, animal, leather, cooked fruits). The palate is more reserved: massive and concentrated.  

  • Barbaresco "Vigneto Starderi" La Spinetta 1999 *****                  

A matte and dense robe. The nose is very elegant (dried flowers, raspberry) and the palate is fresh, deep. The wine is delicate, on the edge and of interminable length.  

  • Barbaresco "Vigneto Valeirano" La Spinetta 1999 ****    

The nose is much more evolved than the previous one (leather, meaty) and more alcoholic. The palate is significantly more powerful, more acidic, more concentrated and the tannins are still very present. This wine requires patience or long decanting to tame its vigor.  

  • Barolo "San Giovanni" Gf Alessandria 1995 ***      

The robe is cloudy and very evolved and the palate is concentrated but rustic (dissociated acidity and tannins). This is a beautiful Barolo, well made, typical of a traditional style.  

  • Barolo "La Serra" Roberto Voerzio 1994 *****        

The robe is light. The first nose is unpleasant with notes of mop and old cellar that gradually disappear to give way with aeration to notes of rose, wild strawberries... ultimately, this nose reveals itself as the most delicate of the entire series. The palate is relatively acidic, not very concentrated, but the aromatic complexity and length on the palate are remarkable... a "nose" wine very seductive.  

  • INTRUDER Brunello di Montalcino Biondi Santi 2001 tenuta Greppo

The wine served blind is judged as a Nebbiolo by all participants. It is true that its floral nose and acidic red fruits as well as its firm tannins can suggest a Barolo or Barbaresco. This is a still closed wine but with a beautiful balance (conservation in chalk cellars which may have slowed its evolution).
