Predating 1950, these bottles belong to another era of Burgundy, one that preceded the widespread adoption of domaine bottling, when the négociant trade raised and commercialised the vast majority of wines. Their rarity makes them witnesses to history as much as to wine, and their appreciation rests on one cardinal condition: the state and provenance of the bottle, absolutely decisive at such an age. The period yielded legendary vintages, foremost among them the post-war trio formed by the concentrated 1945 (born of a spring frost that reduced the harvest to almost nothing), the opulent and sunny 1947 and the classic and refined 1949. Further back still shine the great pre-war vintages — 1937, 1934, 1929 and 1928 — and the more distant legends of 1923, 1919, 1915 and 1911. Where storage has been impeccable, the finest cuvées still offer a deeply moving maturity, with tertiary aromas of undergrowth, truffle and spice, yet each bottle remains unique, to be judged on its own merits.
