A new name from the Montagne de Reims, Champagne Arthur Lelièvre was founded in 2021 in Ludes, a Premier Cru village. A sixth-generation winemaker, Arthur Lelièvre produces terroir-driven Champagnes in tiny quantities under his own name, with individual plots vinified separately, native yeasts, oak-barrel aging, and very low dosage. A blend, single-plot blancs de blancs and blancs de noirs, a saignée rosé, Coteaux Champenois, and ratafia make up a limited range highly sought after by lovers of grower Champagne.
Arthur Lelièvre is the sixth generation of the family behind Champagne Forget-Chauvet, the family-run house in Ludes that he co-manages with his sister Ophélie. After completing his studies, he returned to the estate in 2014 and took charge of the vineyard. He began a major transformation: eliminating herbicides and insecticides, paying close attention to soils and biodiversity, and considering each plot individually. For seven years, he observed, experimented and refined his own vision of wine.
In 2021, he finally launched the champagnes bearing his name. Yet the vintage was one of the most difficult in recent history: a tornado devastated the Lagery vineyard in early June, while Ludes and Taissy endured record rainfall and severe downy mildew pressure. Nearly 80% of the harvest was lost, and the first production was limited to around 3,600 bottles.
The family estate covers around ten hectares, mainly in Ludes, a Premier Cru village in the Montagne de Reims historically renowned for its Meunier. The vineyard also extends to Taissy, on the outskirts of Reims, and Lagery, in the Ardre valley. Many of the Ludes plots face north: this cooler climate encourages slow, even ripening of the grapes, a valuable advantage in the face of climate change that preserves the wines’ freshness and finesse. Chalky and clay-limestone soils bring tension and minerality.
Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay make up the plantings. Arthur Lelièvre favors sustainable viticulture that respects the living environment, inspired by organic and biodynamic practices and certified Haute Valeur Environnementale. He has also introduced massal selections of Pinot Noir in Ludes and is developing agroforestry to strengthen vineyard biodiversity.
Departing from the more classic style of the family wines, Arthur Lelièvre draws inspiration from Burgundy and its low-intervention approach. Each plot is vinified separately, using only indigenous yeasts. The wines ferment and age in 228- and 350-liter oak barrels, then spend a long period on the lees, gaining depth, texture and aromatic complexity. Dosage is very low, often zero, to allow the purity of the fruit and the individuality of each terroir to shine through.
Prémices: a blended cuvée and introduction to the estate’s wines, bringing together Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Ludes Premier Cru plots in proportions that reflect the vineyard’s plantings. Aged in oak with a very low dosage, this champagne combines white fruit, citrus, brioche notes and appealing salinity. Its label, designed with a graphic designer, illustrates the unseen work behind every bottle.
Ludes Chardonnay “Le Belai”: a single-plot blanc de blancs from the oldest Chardonnay vines in Ludes, selected for their concentration. Barrel-fermented and released as a brut nature, it is rich, precise and finely etched, with aromas of citrus, white flowers and hazelnut, and a chalky finish.
Lagery Pinot Noir “Le Walin”: a single-plot blanc de noirs from the Le Walin lieu-dit in Lagery, in the Ardre valley. Full-bodied and vinous, it reveals notes of red fruit, ripe apple and spice, lifted by appealing freshness.
Ludes Pinot Noir: a blanc de noirs from the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Ludes. Deep and structured, it reveals the village’s most concentrated expression, with notes of red berries and forest floor and a saline finish. Produced in very limited quantities.
Meraki: a saignée rosé made by briefly macerating black grapes, this premium cuvée has a deep color and an intense nose of strawberry, cherry and raspberry. On the palate, it combines vinous character, texture and freshness, making it ideal with food.
Red Coteaux Champenois: a still wine made from the estate’s black grapes and aged in barrels. Light, fine and easy-drinking, it reveals cherry, redcurrant and spicy notes in the style of northern red wines.
