A new gem from the Languedoc, Domaine Le Clotagnas is based in Vailhan, a small village in Hérault nestled between Clermont-l'Hérault and Faugères. Founded by winemaker Cédric Benoit, who produced his first vintage in 2024, this small artisanal estate makes limited quantities of single-varietal wines that express the geological diversity of its terroir. Cinsault, Chardonnay, and Vermentino make up a small, carefully focused range.
Le Clotagnas is the personal venture of Cédric Benoit, a winemaker in Vailhan. After assembling a small vineyard around the village, he established his estate with a first vintage in 2024, vinified at neighboring Cassagne et Vitailles, another highly regarded Hérault estate. This understated but ambitious beginning reflects the philosophy behind the venture: take time, work on a human scale and let the terroir speak.
Cédric Benoit runs the estate single-handedly, from vineyard to bottling. This artisanal way of working, far removed from industrial production, explains the deliberately limited volumes. On release, the first cuvées found an audience drawn to their precision and character. An estate to watch closely, it is part of the rising generation of Languedoc winemakers.
Vailhan occupies a distinctive position in the Hérault hinterland, at the foot of the Haut-Languedoc foothills in the Peyne valley. The village lies at the meeting point of several geological formations, giving the estate a mosaic of soils that vary greatly from plot to plot. Le Clotagnas has made this diversity the guiding thread of its range: each cuvée comes from a specific terroir and a single grape variety, to convey the relationship between soil and grape as faithfully as possible.
The soils include clay-limestone, finer clay-limestone deposits, and plots where clay and limestone sit alongside schist, the signature rock of neighboring Faugères. The altitude and nearby hills bring cool nights that preserve the grapes’ acidity and aromatic freshness. Yields are low, contributing to concentration and precision in the wines.
At Domaine Le Clotagnas, winemaking seeks above all to preserve aromatic purity and remain true to each grape variety. Every wine is made from a single variety, and most cuvées are made in tanks, particularly stainless steel, to preserve the freshness and vibrancy of the fruit. Some are vinified without added sulfur, while others are aged in barrels that have held several previous wines, adding structure and finesse without imparting a pronounced oak character. The wines are released as Vin de France, a designation that gives the winemaker considerable freedom of expression.
La Peyne: named after the river running through the Vailhan valley, this red cuvée is made entirely from Cinsault grown on clay-limestone soils. Aged in tanks to retain all its freshness, it is a light, inviting wine with aromas of crisp red fruit, flowers and sweet spices. An easy-drinking, refreshing red, ideal served slightly chilled with charcuterie, grilled dishes or Mediterranean cuisine.
Les Louvières: a white wine made from 100% Chardonnay grown on plots with fine clay-limestone deposits, fermented in stainless steel tanks without added sulfur. It charms with notes of white flowers and mirabelle plum, a round, fresh palate and beautifully pure fruit. Perfect as an aperitif, with grilled fish or poultry in cream sauce.
Les Ribautes: 100% Vermentino grown on a terroir combining clay, limestone and schist, vinified in stainless steel tanks and then aged in barrels that have held several previous wines. Generous yet clearly defined, it reveals aromas of ripe pear, jasmine, acacia and Eastern spices, supported by a full texture and elegant finish. A white wine with character for fish in sauce, goat cheeses or spicy cuisine.
