Château La Pointe is one of the largest and oldest estates in the Pomerol appellation, on the right bank of the Bordeaux vineyard. With twenty-three hectares of vines in a single block, it ranks among the three largest domaines in this rare and exclusive appellation. Predominantly merlot, Château La Pointe stands out for the purity and freshness of its fruit, its deep colour and fine tannins. Revitalised since 2007, this historic cru is now counted among the most prestigious in Pomerol.
The history of Château La Pointe dates back to the mid-19th century, with its true rise beginning at the end of the Second Empire. The estate takes its name from the singular geometry of its vineyard: a large triangular-shaped plot, tapering to a point, which can be seen as soon as one enters the property. Thanks to its remarkable Directoire-inspired residence, built by the Chaperon family, La Pointe was, from 1868, one of the first estates in Pomerol authorised to bear the name Château, and its wines were awarded prizes at several exhibitions at the end of the 19th century.
The d'Arfeuille family became the owner of the estate in 1941. In 2007, the insurer Generali acquired Château La Pointe and undertook a profound revitalisation. The property has since been managed by Eric Monneret, with the guidance of Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, an internationally renowned oenologist and co-owner of Château Angélus. Significant investments have made it possible to renovate the winery, replant the vineyard and adopt an environmentally responsible approach, once again placing this historic cru among the benchmarks of the Pomerol appellation.
Rare for Pomerol, the vineyard of Château La Pointe extends over twenty-three contiguous hectares, adjoining Châteaux Trotanoy and Nénin. It unfolds across the Trotanoy terrace slope and is composed of three main soil types: the gravels and pebbles of the Isle terraces, clay-gravel soils, and sandy soils over clay and gravel. This diversity, combined with springs that bring certain sectors closer to the gravels of the high Pomerol plateau, shapes the complexity of the wine.
The grape variety composition consists of 85% Merlot, the king grape of Pomerol, and 15% Cabernet Franc. With an average age of thirty-five years, the vines are planted at a density of between 6,300 and 7,600 plants per hectare. Viticulture is conducted with the utmost respect for the environment, with cover crops and eco-grazing, which earned the estate High Environmental Value (HVE) certification from the 2018 vintage.
Since the change of ownership in 2007, Château La Pointe has completely modernised its production facilities. Vinification now takes place plot by plot, in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats complemented by concrete vats, in order to stay as true as possible to the typicity of each terroir. Yields are deliberately kept low to achieve greater concentration and purity.
Ageing takes place in French oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new casks that preserves the vibrancy of the fruit without excess oak influence. Under the direction of Eric Monneret and the guidance of Hubert de Boüard, the estate has established a resolutely fresh and elegant style that sets La Pointe apart from many of its neighbours, producing wines that are intense yet never heavy, perfectly balanced.
Château La Pointe (Pomerol, red) is the estate's Fine Wine, predominantly Merlot complemented by Cabernet Franc. It displays a dense, dark violet-hued colour and reveals a delicate nose of violet, small wild fruits (blueberry, raspberry), lifted by cedar, sandalwood, spices and a hint of liquorice. The palate is suave and velvety yet never heavy, seducing with its freshness, balance and perfectly integrated fine tannins. Elegant and refined, it is best enjoyed after a few years of cellaring and pairs ideally with duck breast, red meats and game.
The estate also produces a second wine, formerly known as La Pointe Riffat. Sourced from a selection within the vineyard, it offers a more immediate and approachable expression of the Pomerol terroir, with charming fruitiness and supple tannins, making it ideal for discovering the style of Château La Pointe.
