Legendary Great Burgundies

TASTING REPORT Discover the tasting report by Didier Frayssou from the latest Oenoschool tasting on the theme of "Legendary Great Burgundies". One of the finest tastings of the year....

Marc Colin Saint Aubin 1er cru Murgers Les Dents de Chien 2002 **** The color is golden but with no sign of oxidation. The nose is buttery, milky, with candied citrus fruits and some lingering woody notes. On the palate, the wine is harmonious, with a fine balance and a remarkable finish. This is a wine at its peak of maturity.

Domaine Cordier Chevalier Montrachet 2006 *** A color with orange hues, honeyed aromas, dried fruits, cider and caramel. The palate is much more austere and mineral, but the wine is very persistent and finishes on beautiful bitter notes. However, it is relatively evolved for its age and pedigree and should be drunk soon. D

De Montille Volnay 1er cru Les Champans 1997 *** A fairly dense and little evolved color for a Pinot Noir of nearly 20 years. The bouquet is very complex: small acidic red fruits (raspberry, strawberry), earth, fruits in eau-de-vie. The palate is consistent with the nose but quite characteristic of the domaine, with marked acidity and tannins still present. A lovely wine, "slightly" rustic for my personal taste.

Remoissenet Richebourg 1997 ** An evolved color consistent with its nose: notes of cooked fruit, leather, dried flowers... The attack on the palate is pleasant and the tannins very silky, but the finish is disappointing for such a cru.

Robert Groffier Bonnes Mares 1997 ***** The color is pronounced and the nose at once delicate (infused, floral) and modern (black fruits, cocoa). The palate is harmonious and complex (raspberry, spices, milky notes) with very fine-grained tannins. "One of the 2 bottles of the evening!"

Denis Mortet Gevrey Chambertin en Derée 2002 (dernier millésime de Denis Mortet)***(*) The color is little evolved: violet, matte and intense. Notes of liquorice and black fruits are found, along with floral and lightly roasted aromas. The palate is pure, very fruity, with notes of blackcurrant and a present acidity. A still very young wine, best left to age for a few more years.

Pierre Damoy Chambertin Clos de Bèze 2001 ***** A fairly light, evolved and hazy color. The nose is floral: dried flowers, macerated fruits, bramble. The palate is superb, with a fine acidity that balances the ripeness of the grapes. Silky tannins and a finish worthy of its standing.

domaine de la Romanée Conti Romanée Saint Vivant 1986 ***(*) (beau niveau 1,5 cm) The color is very pale and very evolved (orange hues). The nose is superb with bitter orange and faded rose. The palate is marked by a very present acidity that gives it an austere quality despite a beautiful aromatic complexity (leather, olive, dried flowers...). A lovely, very much alive wine that lacks/has lost fruit to balance this sharp acidity.
