Even if the critic has his detractors, earning a 100/100 score from the famous Robert Parker is a bit like finding the Holy Grail: a difficult, obstacle-filled journey that opens the door to a bright future for the lucky winemakers.
Indeed, relatively few wines have achieved that score, and their prices soar as soon as they do. It’s rare to find a 100/100 wine for less than €200!
For example, a Pontet Canet 2009 (RP100/100) costs at least twice as much as a Pontet Canet 2008 (RP95/100)! Since 1978, around 500 wines have had the good fortune to earn this prestigious—and highly lucrative—distinction.
France currently leads this ranking by a wide margin, with more than 250 cuvées having received the coveted perfect score. Next come the USA, with around 150 cuvées, followed by Australia with some 30 honored cuvées (a long way behind!).
As for the estates that have received the most perfect scores, Guigal and Chapoutier lead the way, each with more than 30 wines rated 100/100 by Robert Parker. Guigal has stood out in particular for its legendary Côte Rôtie La Mouline, Côte Rôtie La Turque and Côte Rôtie La Landonne cuvées, and Chapoutier for Ermitage Pavillon, Ermitage L'Ermite, Ermitage Le Méal and Ermitage de l'Orée.
While Rhône Valley wines (Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage and Châteauneuf du Pape) are highly prized by “Bob,” Bordeaux wines are no less favored. Pétrus is his favorite, with nine vintages rated 100/100. For Burgundy lovers, however, the critic is harder to please: only 11 wines have received top scores over those famous last 40 years—four wines from Domaine de la Romanée Conti, three from Domaine Leroy and one Griotte Chambertin from Claude Dugat… Is this Bob’s revenge for the doors so often closed to him in the region?
While all the estates mentioned above are well known to the public, Robert Parker can also sometimes shine a spotlight on smaller, lesser-known estates producing equally remarkable wines, such as the Monbazillacs from Domaine Tirecul La Gravière, the Cornas wines from Domaine Auguste Clape or Domaine Alain Voge, and the Saint-Émilions from Le Dôme or Peby Faugères…
