The history of Domaine Marcel Deiss is that of a passionate lineage, rooted in the Alsatian soil since 1744. The Deiss family, combining winemakers, ironworkers and bell founders, settled in Bergheim after the Thirty Years' War, marking an unwavering attachment to this borderland. It was in 1947, in the aftermath of the Second World War, that Marcel Deiss, following a military career, founded the estate to reconnect with his viticultural roots. Accompanied by his son André, he built a vineyard extending across the hillsides of Bergheim and neighbouring villages such as Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr and Sigolsheim.

The next generation arrived with Jean-Michel Deiss, who took over the estate in the 1980s and revolutionised practice by adopting field blending as early as 1984, inspired by the Grand Cru Schoenenbourg inherited from a former owner. This "troublemaker," as some affectionately nicknamed him, defied conventions by replanting his grands crus with varietal blends, championing terroir over clonal grape varieties. A pioneer of biodynamics in Alsace, he converted all the plots in 1997, integrating cosmic preparations, natural composts and a humble peasant-like stance towards nature. Today, Mathieu Deiss, Jean-Michel's son, perpetuates this heritage with renewed fervour, even creating the Vignoble du Rêveur in Bennwihr from the family vines. This family saga, marked by battles for qualitative viticulture — against excessive yields and in favour of authentic expression of place — positions Domaine Marcel Deiss among the two or three greatest estates in Alsace.

Domaine Marcel Deiss excels through the mosaic of its terroirs, a fascinating "fault field" of 38 hectares around Ribeauvillé, where geology, topography and climate conspire to produce exceptional wines. Located on south-facing hillsides, these clay-limestone, sandstone and marl soils of the Keuper or Oligocene reveal a rare geological diversity: deep faults allowing roots to plunge up to 40 metres, rolled limestones for tannic power, and iridescent marls for a striking minerality. The Alsatian continental climate, with its harsh winters, stormy summers and misty autumns, encourages slow ripening, ideal for noble rot and late harvests through to the end of October.

Without herbicides or chemical fertilisers, the estate ploughs, hoes and grass-covers its rows, encouraging beneficial fauna, birds and bees. Vinifications of Domaine Marcel Deiss

Winemaking at Domaine Marcel Deiss is a minimalist art, guided by respect for the terroir and a philosophy "of the living." The grapes, harvested by hand at full physiological maturity — often late to capture the tactile expression of the soil — are gently pressed using adapted machinery, preserving the integrity of the berries. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place in large oak vats or stainless steel tanks, sometimes over several months for cuvées with low nitrogen, without chaptalization, acidification or synthetic additives. No enzymes, selected bacteria or gum arabic: only the natural process prevails, with ageing on the lees for a creamy richness.

In a humble cellar, the emphasis is on patience: frequent bâtonnage for silky textures, and minimal filtration to preserve vitality and complexity. Biodynamics permeates every stage, from lunar cycles to preparations fostering cosmic-terrestrial harmony. Domaine Marcel Deiss structures its wines into three iconic ranges: Vins de Fruits (single-variety), Vins de Terroirs (field blends by lieu-dit) and Vins de Temps (late harvests and noble rot selections). 

Vins de Fruits: These varietal wines, sourced from village-level plots, highlight the purity of Alsatian grape varieties. The Alsace Riesling offers a lively, mineral acidity, ideal as an aperitif; the Pinot Gris displays an opulent roundness with notes of ripe fruit; the Pinot Blanc charms with its citrusy freshness and gastronomic versatility; the Gewurztraminer enchants with its exotic aromas and balanced sweetness; and finally, the Muscat Blanc bursts with pure florality. Mambourg: Blend of Pinots (Gris, Beurot, Blanc, Noir), on rolled Oligocene limestones. Spherical dry, tannic and full-bodied, with a lemony pip at its core; precocious and extraordinarily complex. Ageing potential of 15–20 years, ideal with fine meats.

Schoenenbourg: Predominantly old Rieslings and unknown varieties on gypseous Keuper marls. Off-dry to mineral, peppery and smoky sweet wine of "telluric" depth; the greatest Alsatian Fine Wine for ageing (30–50 years), formidable and eternal.

Vins de Temps: These patient cuvées capture noble rot. Vendanges Tardives (VT) in Riesling or Gewurztraminer offer a balanced opulence; Sélections de Grains Nobles (SGN) transcend into concentrated sweet wines, such as the Schoenenbourg SGN. These rarities extend the terroir across decades.
