The history of Domaine Marcel Deiss is the story of a passionate family rooted in Alsatian soil since 1744. The Deiss family, whose members included winemakers, ironworkers and bell founders, settled in Bergheim after the Thirty Years’ War, forging an enduring bond with this borderland. In 1947, after World War II, Marcel Deiss founded the estate following a military career, reconnecting with his winemaking roots. Together with his son André, he built up vineyards across the slopes of Bergheim and neighboring villages such as Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr and Sigolsheim.

The next generation arrived with Jean-Michel Deiss, who took over the estate in the 1980s and transformed its practices by adopting field blending in 1984, inspired by the Grand Cru Schoenenbourg inherited from a previous owner. This "troublemaker", as some affectionately call him, challenged convention by replanting his grand cru vineyards with mixed varieties, championing terroir over cloned grape varieties. A pioneer of biodynamics in Alsace, he converted all the estate’s plots in 1997, incorporating biodynamic preparations, natural composts and a humble farmer’s attitude toward nature. Today, Mathieu Deiss, Jean-Michel’s son, carries on this legacy with renewed passion, even creating Vignoble du Rêveur in Bennwihr from family vineyards. This family story, shaped by battles for quality-focused viticulture, against excessive yields and for authentic expression of place, places Domaine Marcel Deiss among Alsace’s two or three greatest estates.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Marcel Deiss

Domaine Marcel Deiss stands out for the mosaic of its terroirs: a fascinating 38-hectare "network of faults" around Ribeauvillé, where geology, topography and climate combine to produce exceptional wines. On south-facing slopes, these clay-limestone, sandstone and Keuper or Oligocene marl soils reveal rare geological diversity: deep faults allow roots to reach down as far as 40 meters, rounded limestone lends tannic power, and variegated marls bring striking minerality. Alsace’s continental climate, with its harsh winters, stormy summers and misty autumns, favors slow ripening, ideal for noble rot and late harvests extending into the end of October.

Without herbicides or chemical fertilizers, the estate plows, hoes and maintains ground cover, encouraging beneficial wildlife, birds and bees. The result: hardy, deep-rooted vines producing grapes radiant with vitality. These terroirs, from the early-ripening Mambourg to the vertical Schoenenbourg, via the harmonious Altenberg de Bergheim, embody the essence of place—a multifaceted concept in which soil, climate and winemaker interact to create structured, textured wines with lasting appeal.

Winemaking at Domaine Marcel Deiss

Winemaking at Domaine Marcel Deiss is a minimalist art, guided by respect for the terroir and a philosophy centered on "living things". The grapes, handpicked at full physiological ripeness—often late to capture the soil’s tactile expression—are gently pressed using suitable equipment to preserve the integrity of the berries. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts takes place in large oak casks or stainless-steel tanks, sometimes lasting months for low-nitrogen cuvées, without chaptalization, acidification or synthetic additives. No enzymes, selected bacteria or gum arabic: the natural process takes precedence, with aging on the lees bringing creamy richness.

In an unassuming cellar, patience takes center stage: frequent lees stirring creates velvety textures, while minimal filtration preserves vitality and complexity. Biodynamics shapes every step, from lunar cycles to preparations intended to foster harmony between the cosmos and the earth. Made without additives, these wines invite "geosensory tasting": the way they make the mouth water reveals the crystalline verticality of limestone or the sedimentary breadth of clay. The Cuvées of Domaine Marcel Deiss

Domaine Marcel Deiss organizes its wines into three signature ranges: Vins de Fruits (single-variety wines), Vins de Terroirs (field blends by named vineyard site) and Vins de Temps (late-harvest and noble-rot wines). 

Vins de Fruits: These varietal wines, from vineyards within the village boundaries, showcase the purity of Alsatian grape varieties. Alsace Riesling offers lively, mineral acidity, ideal as an aperitif; Pinot Gris brings opulent roundness and notes of ripe fruit; Pinot Blanc charms with its citrus freshness and versatility at the table; Gewurztraminer delights with exotic aromas and balanced sweetness; and Muscat Blanc bursts with pure floral notes. They can age for 5 to 10 years.

Vins de Terroirs: The beating heart of the estate, these field blends celebrate place without naming the grape varieties. Alsace Blanc "Complantation" brings together 13 Alsatian varieties in a lively, textured wine that faithfully reflects the diverse soils. Alsace Rouge, made from 100% Pinot Noir, recalls silky Burgundies with its fine tannins and red fruit. The self-designated Premiers Crus include Berckhem (fresh and saline) and Saint-Hippolyte Rouge (spicy and structured). Named vineyard sites such as Englegarten (gravelly, airy), Rotenberg (iron-rich, powerful) and Grasberg (rocky, saline) offer distinctive dry wines made for the table.

The Grands Crus shine:

Altenberg de Bergheim: A field blend of 13 grape varieties (including Chasselas Rose), this clay-limestone-sandstone Grand Cru produces a richly layered, creamy sweet wine with a lively tang, combining power and finesse. A calm, sunny terroir, it excels with noble rot; ages for 20–30 years.

Mambourg: A blend of Pinot varieties (Gris, Beurot, Blanc and Noir) grown on rounded Oligocene limestone. A rounded, dry wine with tannic grip and richness, and a citrusy core; early ripening and exceptionally complex. Ages for 15–20 years; pair with fine meats.

Schoenenbourg: Predominantly old Riesling vines and unknown varieties grown on Keuper gypsum-bearing marl. Off-dry to richly sweet, mineral, peppery and smoky, with "earthy" depth; one of Alsace’s greatest age-worthy wines (30–50 years), imposing and seemingly timeless.

Vins de Temps: These patiently made cuvées capture the character of noble rot. Riesling or Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives (VT) offer balanced opulence; Sélections de Grains Nobles (SGN) reach new heights as concentrated sweet wines, such as Schoenenbourg SGN.
