A closer look at an estate: Jean-Louis Chave

par Anne-claire weyne

Located in Mauves, in Ardèche, this estate is one of the most legendary in the Rhône Valley. Founded in 1481, it has seen many generations of Chave pass through, but it is ultimately Jean-Louis, the latest winemaker in the dynasty, who has participated in the renaissance of his family's historic terroir by producing wines of great consistency, as close to perfection as possible. The largest part of the vineyard is located on the hill of Hermitage (which needs no introduction) and which represents 13.9 hectares out of 15 within the estate. You will also find some red Saint Joseph as well as two cuvées of Crozes-Hermitage, in white and red.

As a guarantee of quality, the estate's yields are low and the harvests are late, allowing the grapes the time to reach perfect maturity. In addition, the choice is made to carry out the harvests entirely by hand in the purest winemaking tradition in order to care for and select the best grapes.

After destemming, the grapes from each parcel are pressed, vinified and aged separately. The wines generally spend between 18 and 20 months in barrels before bottling, but the percentage of new barrels is greatly reduced so that the rate does not exceed 10 to 20%.

On average, each year 30,000 to 50,000 bottles are produced, of which 50% are destined for export.

The reds from Jean Louis Chave are generally characterized by their depth, they are intense and elegant wines. Whether in red or white, you will find in these wines power and richness that are characteristic of the wines from this exceptional vineyard.

A legendary estate, therefore, with world-renowned wines that we invite you to discover and taste!
