Wine Before 1950

Predating 1950, these bottles belong to another era of French viticulture, one that preceded the widespread adoption of controlled designations of origin (the INAO was established in 1935) and estate bottling, when négociants handled the vast majority of wines. Their rarity makes them witnesses to history, and their appreciation rests on one cardinal condition: the state and provenance of the bottle, which are determining factors at such an age. The period yielded legendary vintages, foremost among them the post-war trio of the concentrated 1945, the opulent 1947, and the classic 1949, celebrated from Bordeaux to Burgundy. Further back shine the great pre-war vintages of 1928 and 1929, and the more distant myths of 1921 and 1900. When storage conditions were impeccable, the finest cuvées still offer a deeply moving maturity, yet each bottle remains unique, to be judged on its own merits.
