History of Bruno Giacosa

The history of the Bruno Giacosa estate dates back to the dawn of the twentieth century, when grandfather Carlo, and then father Mario, worked as négociants, buying the finest grapes from neighboring vineyards to resell to established producers. Born in Neive in 1929, Bruno Giacosa entered the family cellar at a very young age, from the age of thirteen, where he learned the paramount importance of sorting and selecting grapes. From 1961 onwards, he built his own legend by producing an uninterrupted series of exceptional wines, becoming one of the rare winemakers capable of excelling in both Barolo and Barbaresco.

A pioneer of single-vineyard wines, Bruno Giacosa produced his first single-vineyard wine as early as 1964, the Barbaresco Santo Stefano di Neive. In the 1980s, he acquired the prestigious Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, and then, in the late 1990s, elite plots at Asili and Rabajà in Barbaresco. These acquisitions gave birth to the Azienda Agricola Falletto. Having passed away in January 2018, Bruno Giacosa left a legacy continued with passion by his daughter Bruna, who faithfully perpetuates the estate's traditional style.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Bruno Giacosa

The estate's terroir now extends across just over twenty hectares spread across the finest exposures of the Langhe. In Serralunga d'Alba, the Falletto hill offers calcareous and marly soils that yield powerful, structured Barolos of remarkable longevity. In Barbaresco, the Asili vineyards, situated in the commune of Barbaresco, and Rabajà bestow upon the nebbiolo an unparalleled aromatic elegance and finesse, while the historic hillside of Santo Stefano, in Neive, remains one of the founding sites of the estate.

The king grape variety for red wines is nebbiolo, complemented by barbera and dolcetto for the more immediately approachable cuvées. For whites, the arneis cultivated in the Roero illustrates Bruno Giacosa's commitment, having contributed to saving this grape variety from oblivion. The harvest is entirely manual, and each plot is vinified separately in order to respect the unique expression of its terroir.

Vinifications by Bruno Giacosa

The winemaking approach at Bruno Giacosa remains resolutely traditional and uncompromising. Fermentations take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with long macerations that gently extract the substance from the nebbiolo. The wines then undergo aging for several years in large oak casks, most often French, as the estate has deliberately moved away from small barriques in order to preserve the delicate fruit aromas without masking the terroir with woody notes.

The wines typically rest between twenty-four and forty-eight months in large oak casks, then often wait several additional years in the cellar before being released. In the great vintages marked by exceptional finesse, the estate produces its famous Riserva cuvées with a red label (etichetta rossa), true collector's trophies produced only a few times per decade.

Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba: a Fine Wine from the iconic vineyard of Serralunga, this powerful and deep Barolo unfolds aromas of cherry, licorice and spices. Its imposing tannic structure and freshness ensure a cellaring potential of several decades.

Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto: a selection of the finest rows of the Falletto, this cuvée concentrates the elegance and complexity of the vineyard. In the greatest years, it is produced as a Riserva with a red label, one of the most coveted Barolos in the world.

Barolo Vigna Croera: a more confidential Barolo from a plot in La Morra, combining the aromatic charm and suppleness characteristic of this commune with the estate's precise signature.

Barbaresco Asili: the jewel of the estate in the Barbaresco appellation, this nebbiolo captivates with its aromas of rose, raspberry and gentle spices, its silky texture and its minerality. Its finest vintages give rise to the Asili Riserva with a red label, regarded as one of the pinnacles of nebbiolo.

Barbaresco Rabajà: originating from one of the most prestigious climates in Barbaresco, this majestic wine combines power, depth and persistence, with a considerable aging potential.

Barbaresco Santo Stefano di Neive: a historic cuvée, the first single-vineyard expression signed by Bruno Giacosa. Elegant and fragrant, this Barbaresco illustrates the founding terroir of the estate in Neive.

Nebbiolo d'Alba: an ideal entry point into the world of nebbiolo, this wine offers freshness, fruitiness and accessible tannins, a faithful reflection of the house style at a more approachable price.

Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore: from the remarkable sandy hillside of Valmaggiore in the Roero, this nebbiolo stands out for its aromatic finesse, delicacy and refined drinkability.

Barbera d'Alba Falletto: produced on the Falletto estate, this indulgent and juicy barbera captivates with its notes of ripe red fruits, its vibrancy and its balance.

Dolcetto d'Alba: a convivial and fruity cuvée, this dolcetto with supple tannins is best enjoyed young, paired with Piedmontese specialties. The estate also produces single-vineyard selections such as the Dolcetto d'Alba Falletto and the Dolcetto d'Alba Basarini, which are more concentrated.

Roero Arneis: an emblematic white wine of the estate, this vibrant and floral Roero Arneis, with notes of pear, white flowers and almond, pays tribute to a grape variety that Bruno Giacosa helped to revive and popularize.

Spumante Extra Brut: a sparkling wine crafted using the traditional method, this fine and taut pétillant rounds out the range and testifies to the versatility of the estate's expertise.
