The history of Bruno Giacosa

The history of Domaine Bruno Giacosa dates back to the dawn of the 20th century, when Bruno’s grandfather Carlo, followed by his father Mario, worked as grape merchants, buying the finest grapes from neighboring vineyards to resell to established producers. Born in Neive in 1929, Bruno Giacosa joined the family cellar at just 13, where he learned the vital importance of sorting and selecting grapes. From 1961 onward, he built his own legend through an unbroken series of exceptional wines, becoming one of the few winemakers to excel in both Barolo and Barbaresco.

A pioneer of single-vineyard wines, Bruno Giacosa made his first wine from a single vineyard, Barbaresco Santo Stefano di Neive, in 1964. In the 1980s, he acquired the prestigious Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, followed in the late 1990s by prized plots in Asili and Rabajà in Barbaresco. These purchases gave rise to Azienda Agricola Falletto. Bruno Giacosa died in January 2018, leaving a legacy that his daughter Bruna carries on with passion, faithfully preserving the estate’s traditional style.

Bruno Giacosa’s terroirs and vineyards

The estate’s vineyards now cover just over 20 hectares across some of the finest exposures in the Langhe. In Serralunga d'Alba, the Falletto hillside has limestone and marl soils that yield powerful, structured Barolos with remarkable longevity. In Barbaresco, the Asili vineyards, located in the municipality of Barbaresco, and those of Rabajà lend nebbiolo incomparable fragrant elegance and finesse, while the historic Santo Stefano slope in Neive remains one of the estate’s original sites.

Nebbiolo is the leading red grape variety, complemented by barbera and dolcetto for cuvées intended to be enjoyed sooner. For white wines, arneis grown in the Roero reflects Bruno Giacosa’s commitment to a grape variety he helped rescue from obscurity. All grapes are harvested by hand, and each plot is vinified separately to preserve its unique expression of terroir.

Bruno Giacosa’s winemaking

Winemaking at Bruno Giacosa remains resolutely traditional and uncompromising. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with long macerations that gently extract the character of the nebbiolo grapes. The wine then ages for several years in large oak casks, usually made from French oak. The estate has deliberately forgone small barrels to preserve the fruit’s delicate aromas without masking the terroir with oak notes.

The wines generally spend between 24 and 48 months in large oak casks, then often rest in the cellar for several more years before release. In outstanding vintages marked by exceptional finesse, the estate makes its famed red-label Riserva cuvées (etichetta rossa), true collectors’ trophies produced only a few times each decade.

Bruno Giacosa’s cuvées

Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba: a fine wine from Serralunga’s emblematic vineyard, this powerful, profound Barolo reveals aromas of cherry, licorice and spice. Its imposing tannic structure and freshness give it the potential to age for several decades.

Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto: selected from the finest rows of Falletto, this cuvée captures the elegance and complexity of the vineyard. In the greatest vintages, it is also made as a red-label Riserva, one of the world’s most sought-after Barolos.

Barolo Vigna Croera: a lesser-known Barolo from a plot in La Morra, combining the aromatic charm and suppleness characteristic of this municipality with the estate’s precise style.

Barbaresco Asili: a jewel of the estate’s Barbaresco wines, this nebbiolo delights with aromas of rose, raspberry and sweet spice, a silky texture and minerality. Its finest vintages give rise to the red-label Asili Riserva, considered a pinnacle of nebbiolo.

Barbaresco Rabajà: from one of Barbaresco’s most prestigious vineyard sites, this majestic wine combines power, depth and length with considerable aging potential.

Barbaresco Santo Stefano di Neive: a historic cuvée and Bruno Giacosa’s first single-vineyard wine. Elegant and fragrant, this Barbaresco showcases the terroir where the estate’s story began in Neive.

Nebbiolo d'Alba: an ideal introduction to nebbiolo, this wine offers freshness, fruit and approachable tannins, faithfully reflecting the house style at a more accessible price.

Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore: from the remarkable sandy slopes of Valmaggiore in the Roero, this nebbiolo stands out for its aromatic finesse, delicacy and refined drinkability.

Barbera d'Alba Falletto: produced at Domaine du Falletto, this generous, juicy barbera delights with notes of ripe red fruit, vibrancy and balance.

Dolcetto d'Alba: a convivial, fruit-forward cuvée, this dolcetto has soft tannins and is best enjoyed young alongside Piedmontese specialties. The estate also makes more concentrated single-vineyard selections, including Dolcetto d'Alba Falletto and Dolcetto d'Alba Basarini.

Roero Arneis: the estate’s signature white wine, this lively, floral Roero Arneis has notes of pear, white flowers and almond. It pays tribute to a grape variety that Bruno Giacosa helped revive and popularize.

Spumante Extra Brut: made using the traditional method, this fine, vibrant sparkling wine rounds out the range and demonstrates the versatility of the estate’s winemaking expertise.
