History of Château de Saint Cosme

Saint Cosme’s history dates back to Roman times, as evidenced by the twenty-five fermentation vats carved into the rock that have survived intact, near an ancient Roman villa and the chapel that gives the estate its name. The Barruol family bought its first vineyards here in 1490 and has passed down its expertise since the 15th century. Henri Barruol established the estate as a renowned producer from 1957 and converted it to organic farming in 1972, when he was still selling his Gigondas by the barrel.

His son Louis Barruol took the reins in 1992 and dramatically raised the quality of the wines. In 1997, he founded a grower-négociant operation to showcase lesser-known great Rhône terroirs, then obtained biodynamic certification for the estate in 2010. Supported since 2016 by winemaker Nicolas Chevrol, he was elected president of the Gigondas appellation in 2024, confirming his standing as a leading figure in the Rhône. Louis Barruol has also expanded his venture with Château de Rouanne in Vinsobres and the Forge Cellars project in the United States.

Terroirs and vineyards of Château de Saint Cosme

The estate’s vineyards cover approximately 22 hectares of old vines, averaging 60 years of age, in the heart of Gigondas, plus around ten hectares near Violès. The geological upheaval that formed the Dentelles de Montmirail created a veritable mosaic of soils here: Miocene sands, red clay, gravel, and fossil-rich Jurassic limestone marl. This terroir, coupled with a cool microclimate and late ripening, gives the wines remarkable freshness, balance, and finesse while keeping alcohol levels moderate.

Grenache is the leading grape variety, alongside Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Clairette. Three vineyard sites illustrate the diversity of Gigondas: Le Poste borders the chapel on limestone marl; Le Claux is home to very old vines planted in 1870 on clay; and Hominis Fides has its roots in sandy soils. True to its family heritage, the estate avoids herbicides, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides, hoes its vines by hand, and nurtures living soils while respecting biodiversity.

Winemaking at Château de Saint Cosme

The winemaking philosophy combines tradition with precision. The grapes are never destemmed: whole-cluster fermentation brings structure, freshness, and definition to the wines. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts, while aging combines concrete tanks with 228-liter Burgundy barrels, mostly previously used, to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir without excessive new oak. The wines are neither fined nor filtered.

Louis Barruol applies the same exacting standards to the grower-négociant operation he founded in 1997: small-production cuvées, hands-on work, lasting partnerships with passionate winegrowers, and wines transported in barrels to protect them. The goal remains the same: to produce wines that express their origins with purity and character, offering fine balance and genuine aging potential.

The cuvées of Château de Saint Cosme

Gigondas: the estate’s signature wine, this Grenache-dominant blend with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault reveals aromas of wild raspberry, blood orange, and old rose. Full-bodied, fresh, and silky, it has the potential to age beautifully for ten to fifteen years.

Gigondas Valbelle: the estate’s first major cuvée, created in 1993, comes from a selection of very old vines. Rich, deep, and distinguished, and aged in barrels, it is a highly complex Gigondas built to age.

Gigondas Le Poste: a single-vineyard wine from near the chapel, on a terroir of Jurassic limestone marl and fossils. This highly mineral Grenache charms with its elegance and purity and is often described as the estate’s finest and most delicate wine.

Gigondas Le Claux: from a 1.8-hectare plot of vines planted in 1870 on clay and gravel, it is vinified in the Burgundian style using whole clusters. Incredibly aromatic and structured, with a firm tannic backbone, it calls for a few years of patience and can age for more than fifteen years.

Gigondas Hominis Fides: grown on Miocene sandy soils, this old-vine Grenache combines power and finesse in an exceptionally elegant style. Acclaimed by critics, with scores as high as 96/100 from Robert Parker, it ranks among the appellation’s stars.

Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge: made entirely from Syrah, this cuvée has a surprisingly northern Rhône style and is regularly cited as one of the appellation’s best values. Dark fruit, spice, and freshness make it a wine to enjoy right away.

Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc: a deliciously fresh white, it offers a pure expression of white Rhône grape varieties, with floral and white-fleshed fruit notes.

Les Deux Albions Rouge: a Rhône blend from vineyards in Violès, this supple, fruit-forward Côtes-du-Rhône charms with its delicious, easygoing character.

Les Deux Albions Blanc: this fresh, fragrant IGP white is best enjoyed young, when its vibrancy and freshness shine.

Little James’ Basket Press Rouge: an original Vin de France cuvée made using a solera-style method that blends several Grenache vintages, the oldest dating back to 1999. Round, spicy, and immediately appealing, it is made for sheer enjoyment.

Little James’ Basket Press Blanc: a lively, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc-based Vin de France, with notes of citrus, blackcurrant bud, and white flowers.

Vacqueyras: neighboring Gigondas, this Grenache-dominant red offers warmth, spice, and generosity in a sun-drenched, full-bodied style.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape: made through a négociant operation using grapes from partner growers, this fine wine from the south combines power, complexity, and a velvety texture, with excellent aging potential.

Condrieu: a floral, opulent white made from 100% Viognier, with notes of apricot, peach, and white flowers and a rich texture.

Côte-Rôtie: made from Serine, an old form of Syrah, vinified with whole clusters and aged for twelve months in barrels, 30% of them new, it stands out for its depth, peppery notes, and distinguished character.

Saint-Joseph: an elegant northern Rhône Syrah with notes of dark fruit, violet, and spice, and a fine, fresh structure.

Crozes-Hermitage: an approachable, fruit-forward Syrah, delicious and balanced, it makes a fine introduction to the reds of the northern Rhône.

Hermitage: a fine Syrah wine from the legendary hill, distinguished by its density, controlled power, and exceptional aging potential.

Beyond these cuvées, Saint Cosme’s grower-négociant operation also produces wines from other Rhône appellations, depending on the vintage, including Cornas, Saint-Péray, Lirac, Vinsobres, Ventoux, and Côtes du Vivarais. All are made in small batches with the same pursuit of purity and balance.
