Château Phélan Ségur was purchased in 1985 by the Gardinier family, also owners of Champagne Lanson and Champagne Pommery. Phélan Ségur is a Cru Bourgeois exceptionnel of Saint Estèphe (according to the 2003 classification) situated 50 km north of Bordeaux on the left bank. The vines, which cover 70 hectares, are found on the plateau of Saint Estèphe, average around 30 years of age and are planted at a density of 8,300 pieds per hectare on deep gravel and sandy clay. The vines are tended to with agriculture raisonnée and produce 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 1,5% Cabernet Franc and 1,5% of Petit verdot.
Phélan Ségur produces 3 red wines of which the first wine (Grand Vin) is sold under the name Château Phélan Ségur. The second wine, created in 1986 and called « Frank Phélan », is produced from one 15 hectare parcel of mostly old vines that are not used in the Grand Vin. The third wine, sold under the name « La Croix Bonis », is made from mostly Merlot. The Grand Vin is classically Médocain in it’s balance and drinkability, capable of aging from 7 to 15 years. The most recent vintages, notably 2014 and 2015, are precise and endowed with a charm and depth superior to their elders, great years in gestation. Undoubtedly, happy owners of those two vintages will be able to appreciate them over the long term. The second wine, « Frank Phélan », combines the suppleness and silkiness of its tannins and delicacy of fruit; it can be drunk from 3 to 8 years. Whereas the third wine, « La croix Bonis », is less complex and more supple and should thus be drunk on its fruit at a younger age.
