History of Château Suduiraut

The history of Château Suduiraut begins in 1580, with the marriage of Léonard de Suduiraut and Nicole d'Allard, who brought the estate as a dowry. The estate, located in Preignac, near Sauternes, took its current name after this marriage. However, it was not until the end of the 17th century that the château truly came into its own. Indeed, Blaise de Suduiraut, grandson of Léonard, decided to entirely renovate the property after the destruction suffered during the Fronde.

Blaise called upon André Le Nôtre, the celebrated gardener of Louis XIV, to design the magnificent French formal gardens that still surround the château today. This majestic setting thus became an exceptional viticultural and architectural estate.

Over the centuries, Château Suduiraut passed through the hands of several families. In 1992, it was acquired by AXA Millésimes, a subsidiary of the AXA insurance group, with the mission of preserving and elevating the excellence of historic vineyards. Under the direction of Christian Seely and the estate's technical team, including Pierre Montégut as technical director, the estate has managed to maintain and even elevate the quality of its wines. Today, Château Suduiraut is one of the most prestigious estates in the Sauternes appellation.

The 2015, 2021, 2009 and 2010 vintages of Château Suduiraut received 98/100 from Robert Parker, and the 2009 vintage also received 97/100, highlighting the richness and depth of this great Sauternes wine.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Suduiraut

Château Suduiraut benefits from an ideal geographical location for the production of sweet wines. Situated near the Ciron river and the Garonne, the estate takes advantage of unique climatic conditions that favour the development of noble rot (Botrytis Cinerea). This fungus, essential to the creation of great Sauternes, develops thanks to the alternation of morning mists and sunny days, allowing for optimal concentration of sugars in the grapes.

The Suduiraut vineyard extends over 91 hectares, planted primarily with Sémillon (80%), complemented by Sauvignon Blanc (15%) and Sauvignon Gris (5%). This terroir is composed of sandy-clay gravels, a soil that captures the sun's heat and accelerates the ripening of the grapes, imparting all their opulence to the wines. These well-draining soils, combined with low yields, enhance the concentration of the grapes and give rise to wines of great aromatic complexity and strong minerality.

Château Suduiraut is also distinguished by the advanced age of its vines, with an average of 35 years. The high planting density (7,000 vines/ha) ensures limited yields, but of exceptional quality, favouring the production of wines with powerful and delicate aromas. The viticulture practised is sustainable, with particular care given to the selection of plots, which exclusively reserve the finest grapes for the production of the Fine Wine.

Winemaking at Château Suduiraut

Winemaking at Château Suduiraut is a lengthy and rigorous process, with particular attention paid to every stage to ensure the excellence of the wine. After manual harvesting, carried out in several passes to select the ripest berries affected by noble rot, the grapes are delicately pressed. This crucial step allows for the extraction of the richest juices, which express the full complexity of the aromas.

Fermentation takes place barrel by barrel, a process carefully mastered to respect the specificity of each plot and ensure optimal preservation of aromas. The wines are then aged for 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels, approximately 50% of which are new each year. This extended aging on the lees allows for the development of complex aromas and the refinement of the wine's texture, while preserving its freshness and vivacity.

Each vintage is then carefully assembled, with a drastic selection of the finest lots. In years where the quality of the harvest does not meet the estate's standards, no Fine Wine is bottled, which reflects the constant demand for quality at Château Suduiraut.

The cuvées of Château Suduiraut

Château Suduiraut produces several cuvées of sweet wines, each expressing the unique characteristics of its terroir and vintage. Here is an overview of the main cuvées:

Château Suduiraut - Premier Cru Classé

The estate's Fine Wine, Château Suduiraut, is one of the most prestigious wines of the Sauternes appellation. It is the result of a rigorous selection of the finest plots of the estate, and is distinguished by its golden colour that evolves towards amber with time. On the palate, it combines power, opulence and great aromatic complexity. The typical aromas include white flowers, candied fruits, honey and soft spices, with a subtle minerality that ensures an exceptional length on the palate. This wine has an extraordinary aging potential, capable of improving over several decades.

Castelnau de Suduiraut

The second wine of the estate, Castelnau de Suduiraut is crafted from specific plots, allowing for faster maturation than the Fine Wine. With aromas of candied yellow fruits, quince, frangipane and a mineral touch, it offers excellent accessibility from an early age. It stands out for its velvety texture and spiced complexity, while being more affordable than the Fine Wine.

Lions de Suduiraut

The Lions de Suduiraut is a cuvée designed to introduce wine enthusiasts to the world of Sauternes. This wine combines Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc in a light, fresh and mineral style, with aromas of exotic fruits and a hint of honey. More modern and easy to enjoy in its youth, it represents a more accessible alternative to the great traditional sweet wines.

The greatest vintages of Sauternes and Barsac, two prestigious appellations of Bordeaux, include exceptional years such as 1945, 1947, 1949, 1955, 1959, and 1967, renowned for their finesse and complexity.
