A classified growth on the terroirs of Barsac - Premier Grand Cru Classé de Sauternes
Château Coutet, a true jewel of the Barsac appellation, is renowned for its sweet wines of rare finesse. This historic estate, classified Premier Grand Cru de Sauternes in 1855, produces wines of a unique style, combining freshness and aromatic complexity. Its long history and expertise, passed down from generation to generation, make it one of the most prestigious producers in the region. Château Coutet is the promise of an unforgettable tasting experience, blending tradition and modernity in the art of wine.
The history of Château Coutet begins in the 13th century, long before it became a renowned wine estate. Originally, the site was an English fortress, of which a square crenellated tower still stands today, an emblem of medieval military construction. It was in 1643 that the estate took on its viticultural dimension under the impetus of Charles Le Guérin, then Lord of Coutet, who made it one of the first vineyards in Sauternes.
The Château subsequently belonged to several influential families, including the Lur-Saluces, famous for their role in the sweet white wine industry. They also owned the prestigious Château d'Yquem, and Château Coutet even once housed the stables of the latter. In 1926, the estate was purchased by Henry-Louis Guy, a Lyonnais industrialist, who modernized the facilities with hydraulic presses still in use today.
In 1977, the Baly family, of Alsatian origin, took over the estate and ushered in a new era. With the help of the company Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A., they modernized production while remaining faithful to the viticultural heritage of the Château. Under the current leadership of Aline Baly, the third generation of the family, Château Coutet continues to flourish and produce wines of exceptional quality, remaining one of the jewels of Barsac.
The 2009 and 1988 vintages of Château Coutet Cuvée Madame were rated 99/100 by Robert Parker, and the 1990, 2001 and 1971 vintages received 98/100, attesting to the quality and richness of this Fine Wine from Barsac.
The unique terroir of Château Coutet, located at the heart of the Barsac appellation, is one of the secrets behind the exceptional quality of its wines. This 38.5-hectare estate rests on clay-limestone soils typical of the region. These cool soils, due to their capacity to retain moisture, slow down the ripening of the grapes, thus providing a particular microclimate that gives the wines of Coutet their unmatched freshness and vivacity.
The grape varieties are dominated by Sémillon (75%), a variety renowned for its ability to develop noble rot, which is essential for the production of great sweet wines. This is complemented by Sauvignon Blanc (23%), which brings freshness and vibrant aromas, as well as Muscadelle (2%), which rounds out the blend with delicate floral notes.
The vines, with an average age of 38 years, are cultivated using sustainable farming methods, reflecting a profound respect for the environment and the terroir. The harvest is entirely manual and takes place in several passes (tries), in order to select only grapes affected by noble rot, thus ensuring wines of optimal quality.
At Château Coutet, winemaking is a meticulous process that follows traditional methods while benefiting from modern equipment. After the harvest, the grapes are delicately pressed using hydraulic presses, a technique specific to Château Coutet that allows juices of exceptional purity to be extracted.
Alcoholic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, which imparts aromatic complexity and an elegant structure to the wines. The estate uses exclusively new barrels for each vintage, guaranteeing optimal quality. After fermentation, the wines are aged in barrels for 18 months, a crucial period that allows them to develop their full aromatic richness and depth.
The blending stage is undoubtedly the most delicate step, where the expertise of the cellar masters is fully expressed. It is through this art of blending that Château Coutet manages to finely balance the sweetness and freshness of its wines, endowing them with exceptional longevity.
