Mâconnais

All the wines of Mâconnais in Burgundy

The Mâconnais, a wine region in southern Burgundy in Saône-et-Loire, extends over approximately 7,000 hectares of vineyards, renowned for their white wines made from the Chardonnay grape, as well as for reds and rosés based on Gamay and Pinot Noir. The emblematic appellations are Mâcon, Mâcon-Villages, Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Véran, Viré-Clessé, Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles. Since 2020, Pouilly-Fuissé has distinguished itself with 22 climats classified as Premiers Crus, highlighting the diversity of its limestone and marl terroirs. These soils, combined with a continental climate with southern influences, produce elegant white wines marked by aromas of white fruits, citrus, flowers and distinctive minerality. The red wines of the Mâconnais, rarer, seduce with their notes of red fruits and their suppleness. With nearly 400 estates and an annual production of approximately 400,000 hectoliters, the Mâconnais offers excellent value for money.

Where is the Mâconnais vineyard located?

The Mâconnais is located in the south of Burgundy, in Saône-et-Loire, between Tournus to the north and Saint-Vérand to the south, forming a ribbon of vines some fifty kilometres long and ten kilometres wide. It extends over approximately 5,600 hectares, between the Saône plain to the east and the bocage valleys of the Grosne to the west, around the town of Mâcon. The Côte Chalonnaise extends it to the north, and the Beaujolais begins immediately to the south, such that certain communes produce both saint-véran and beaujolais. The landscape, characterised by limestone hills, Romanesque villages and two spectacular rocky outcrops — the rocks of Solutré and Vergisson — is among the most recognisable in the French vineyard.

History of the Mâconnais vineyard

The history of this vineyard begins with the Romans, but it was monasticism that gave it its shape: the abbey of Cluny, founded in 910, and its priories structured the cultivation of the vine throughout the region from the Middle Ages onwards. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Mâconnais winemakers set off to sell their wine in Paris, an episode that has remained famous through the journey of Claude Brosse, and the poet Lamartine, a landowner in the Milly area, contributed to local renown in the 19th century. The 20th century brought the structuring into appellations: Pouilly-Fuissé was recognised in 1936, Mâcon in 1937, Saint-Véran in 1971, and then Viré-Clessé in 1999, replacing the former mâcon-viré and mâcon-clessé designations. The cooperative wineries, very powerful here, long shaped the image of simple, inexpensive wines. Everything changed from the 1990s onwards with the arrival of ambitious winemakers and great names from the Côte d'Or, followed by the recognition of 22 vineyard sites as premier cru in Pouilly-Fuissé in 2020, followed by four sites in Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles from the 2024 vintage, with a similar application currently under review for Saint-Véran.

What are the terroirs of the Mâconnais?

The terroirs rest on a foundation of Jurassic limestone and marl, folded and faulted, which creates a succession of rounded hills and slopes oriented mainly east and south-east, between 200 and 400 metres in altitude. To the north, around Viré, Clessé and Lugny, crinoidal limestone and the dalle nacrée predominate, with light clay-limestone soils that bring finesse and precision. To the south, the great cliffs of Solutré and Vergisson yield limestone scree and deep marls, the terroir of the most complete wines, while the more siliceous, sandy or clay soils on the fringes of the Beaujolais are better suited to gamay. The climate, semi-continental but open to southern influences, is warmer and drier than that of the Côte d'Or, which advances the harvest by a few days and yields riper chardonnays. Among the emblematic vineyard sites are Les Ménétrières, Le Clos, Les Crays and Les Quarts, now classified as premier cru.

Which grape varieties are permitted in the Mâconnais?

The king grape variety is chardonnay, the only one permitted in the five village appellations — Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Loché, Pouilly-Vinzelles, Saint-Véran and Viré-Clessé — as well as in Mâcon-Villages. It alone accounts for approximately 85% of the planted area and finds here, on limestone, a rare balance between ripeness and acidity. Gamay noir à jus blanc occupies second place and is used to produce the red and rosé mâcon wines, alongside pinot noir, which is also permitted in this appellation, with pinot remaining the sole variety authorised for red bourgogne. Aligoté rounds out the palette with the regional appellation bourgogne aligoté. In white, chardonnay here delivers aromas of citrus, white peach, acacia and hazelnut, punctuated by mineral and buttery notes depending on the ageing, while gamay brings a crunchy red fruit character and a supple texture.

What are the different styles of Mâconnais wines?

This vineyard produces predominantly dry whites, some reds and rosés, and a significant share of Burgundy crémants. The hierarchy is easy to read: mâcon, supple and approachable, is drunk young; mâcon-villages and mâcon wines followed by a commune name, such as Chardonnay, Lugny, Pierreclos or Milly-Lamartine, gain in precision; and the five village crus form the summit. Pouilly-Fuissé yields the most ample and profound wines, Saint-Véran a more delicate and floral style, Viré-Clessé a rounded texture sometimes marked by a hint of residual sugar in the late-harvest wines, Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles discreet and tightly wound whites. Vinification takes place in vat for the freshest cuvées, in barrel for single-vineyard selections, with ageing of nine to eighteen months on the lees and a use of new oak that has become much more restrained.

When it comes to food and wine pairings, these whites accompany Burgundy snails, Bresse chicken in cream sauce, river fish, seafood, roast poultry and goat's cheeses from the Mâconnais. The richest cuvées stand up to pan-fried foie gras or a well-aged comté, while the gamay reds pair with charcuterie and jambon persillé. Serve the whites between 11 and 13 °C, slightly less chilled for the village-level grand crus.

What are the best vintages of the Mâconnais?

The reference vintages of the last thirty years are 1996, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023, years in which chardonnay combined ripeness and freshness. 2014 and 2017 remain benchmarks for balance and tension, 2018 and 2020 are sunny and generous vintages, 2022 and 2023 are abundant and ripe years, highly successful for producers who kept their yields in check. Conversely, 2003 produced heavy and atypical wines, and 2012, 2013, 2016, 2021 and 2024 were struck by frost, hail or mildew, with very small harvests but sometimes lovely bottles from the finest producers. A point of caution when purchasing: white Burgundies from the late 1990s and early 2000s vintages suffered from premature oxidation, which is reason to favour more recent vintages when building a cellar for ageing. Today, 2014 to 2019 are at their peak, while 2020, 2022 and 2023 still require a few more years for the village-level crus.

What are the best estates of the Mâconnais?

The finest estates here combine local figures who have become cult names with great names from the Côte d'Or who have come to settle in the region. Domaine Guffens-Heynen is the absolute reference. Established in 1979 by the Belgian Jean-Marie Guffens, it shook up the sector's habits with tiny yields, sorted harvests and vinifications of extreme precision. Its mâcon-pierreclos wines, notably Le Chavigne, and its pouilly-fuissé reach grand cru prices and improve over several years in the cellar. Guffens also founded the négociant house Verget, a high-level merchant that served as a model for an entire generation.

Domaine des Héritiers du Comte Lafon played a decisive role in the rehabilitation of the region. Dominique Lafon, from the prestigious Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault, settled in Milly-Lamartine in the late 1990s and applied his Côte d'Or methods to the Mâconnais, with organic and biodynamic farming and careful ageing. Le Clos de la Crochette, the estate's monopole, and its viré-clessé wines offer Côte d'Or quality at Mâconnais prices.

Domaine Leflaive, a world reference for white wine in Puligny-Montrachet, followed the same path by acquiring around twenty hectares in Verzé and Solutré-Pouilly from 2004 onwards. A pioneer of biodynamics in Burgundy, fully converted since 1996, it produces mâcon-verzé wines of remarkable purity and salinity, which rank among the most sought-after in the region.

Domaine J.A. Ferret is the historic estate of Pouilly-Fuissé. Founded in 1840, it owes its reputation to Jeanne Ferret, who established as early as the 1970s her own classification of the estate's terroirs, with the designations Tête de Cru and Hors Classe, anticipating the official classification by fifty years. Acquired by the négociant house Louis Jadot in 2008, the estate farms eighteen hectares and offers several premier cru cuvées, including Les Ménétrières and Tournant de Pouilly.

Château Fuissé, the property of the Vincent family, is the other great historic name of the appellation. Its cuvée Le Clos, from an emblematic enclosed vineyard now classified as a premier cru, has long served as the benchmark for age-worthy pouilly-fuissé, in an ample, rich and judiciously oaked style, capable of lasting a good decade.

Domaine de la Bongran, in Clessé, is the most singular estate in the Mâconnais. Jean Thévenet, followed by his son, practise very late harvesting on grapes that are sometimes botrytised, with slow fermentations and long ageing. Its viré-clessé wines, including the cuvée Tradition E.J. Thévenet, often retain a few grams of residual sugar and age superbly, sometimes for twenty years and more.

Domaine La Soufrandière, run by the Bret brothers, has established itself in Vinzelles with a biodynamic approach and rigorous single-vineyard work. Its cuvées Les Quarts and Les Longeays, now classified as premier cru, rank among the most tightly wound and most distinguished whites of the southern Mâconnais, complemented by a négociant activity under the name Bret Brothers.

Domaine Daniel et Julien Barraud, in Vergisson, is a reliable and critically acclaimed estate. Father and son work parcels of old vines at the foot of the rock, including En Buland and Les Crays, producing mineral, finely chiselled pouilly-fuissé wines with a beautiful length, in a more vertical style than the appellation average.

How long should a Mâconnais wine be kept?

A Mâconnais wine keeps from two to fifteen years depending on its appellation level. Mâcon and mâcon-villages are best drunk within their first two to four years, when the fruit and vivacity are at their peak. Mâcon wines followed by a commune name and saint-véran keep easily for three to seven years, pouilly-fuissé, pouilly-vinzelles, pouilly-loché and viré-clessé from five to ten years. Premier crus and single-vineyard selections from the finest estates exceed ten to fifteen years in great vintages, and viré-clessé late-harvest wines can age well beyond that. Gamay reds are best enjoyed within three to five years. The ideal cellar is kept between 11 and 14 °C, with good humidity, away from light and vibrations, with bottles lying on their side. A short decant of fifteen to thirty minutes usefully awakens the youngest and most tightly wound crus.
