The 1963 vintage has a very bad reputation and it must be acknowledged that the climatic conditions did not help winemakers produce great wines. In Bordeaux, 1963 was cold and humid all summer (from July to September inclusive), so the wines are far from a 1961 vintage, regardless of their color. In Burgundy, the very late harvest extended until early November, thanks to an Indian summer that saved the crop, but the 1963 red wines are not mythical for all that. The 1963 white Burgundies from Meursault and Puligny Montrachet are better and can sometimes be a pleasant surprise. No 1963 vintage in Champagne, the wines were placed in reserve to supply the assemblages of non-vintage bruts. It must be said that the wines were formidably acidic, and it would probably have taken time to incorporate these reserve wines into the following non-vintage bruts (so as not to distort their taste). In the Rhône Valley, the year 1963 is not particularly notable either, as in the Loire and in Alsace where productions were severely affected by poor weather conditions. While the year 1963 is not a great year from an oenological point of view, a bottle of this vintage can nevertheless be an original gift for a milestone birthday. Offering a bottle of wine from a symbolic year is always an appreciated gesture.
If you wish to invest in a bottle of 1963 wine, we advise you to do so more for symbolic rather than purely oenological reasons, as this vintage is not the greatest of the decade. In 1963, Vintage Ports (vintages) were highly regarded and represent a wise purchase choice for an anniversary bottle.
