The 1965 vintage is a challenging vintage throughout France! Nevertheless, it represents beautiful symbolism for a gift for those who will turn 60 in 2025, for example! A birthday, a wedding anniversary, or an event from 1965 to celebrate in 2025... The symbolism is always appreciated! The winemakers were able to work their grapes in a particular way to extract as much aroma as possible, but the vintage is among the most difficult of the 20th century, as it rained so much...
In Bordeaux, the cool and humid spring delayed flowering, which resulted in poor pollination. This was followed by a cool summer with significant rainfall and a very rainy September. The latter is often crucial for the full maturity of the berries. Thus, cabernets and merlots did not benefit from the temperatures necessary to reach their optimal maturity.. The wines are therefore not very concentrated, the reds are quite light with tannins that are not well integrated, and the whites lack aromatic concentration..
The climate was also very difficult in Burgundy. Maturity was thus incomplete for pinot noirs and chardonnays. The red wines therefore do not have the usual full aromatic range and have too much acidity, as do the white wines which have rather underdeveloped aromas.
Champagne also had the same conditions as those of the rest of the French vineyard. Cold spring, cool and humid summer, rainy autumn... Few houses produced vintage Champagnes, the base wines were weak in aromas and so the Champenois were able to count on their reserve wines to make blends.
The Rhône was also not spared by the unfavorable climatic conditions of 1965. In the Northern Rhône Valley, syrahs suffered from the lack of heat, thus producing rather lean wines... In the Southern Rhône Valley, grenache, mourvèdre and syrah also struggled to reach optimal maturity: the wines are less concentrated than usual, with rather diluted aromas... Whites based on marsanne, roussanne and viognier suffered from this climate and produced wines that lack balance due to excessive acidity.
Loire, Languedoc Roussillon and Alsace are no exception to the rule: the same conditions have decidedly affected a large part of the wine-growing areas and have impaired the full maturation of the grape varieties in these terroirs.
1965 is therefore a vintage rather known for its failures than for its successes.
A few great names such as Latour in Bordeaux nonetheless managed to produce great wines... The 1965 vintage remains today a symbol and can thus be a pleasure as a symbolic gift for a specific event, even if connoisseurs will prefer the 1966 vintage, which, one year after a complicated vintage, proves to be a very great vintage with ideal climatic conditions!
