A very great year in Bordeaux, 1961 is a legendary vintage that produced some truly great wines. Rare and extremely sought-after bottles due to a very low harvest volume. The months of August and September were sunny, bringing concentration. The grapes were small but magnificent, and their thick skins contributed color and tannins. The 1961 red Bordeaux are exceptional across all appellations and the vintage is universally acclaimed. Only the sweet white wines (Sauternes 1961) produced wines of slightly lesser quality (though still very good). The aging potential of the 1961 red Bordeaux is great. In Burgundy, the 1961 vintage is also very good in both reds and whites. In Champagne, the year is highly regarded and even reveals a few gems (Bollinger RD 1961 or Cuvée William Deutz 1961). Also a great vintage in the Rhône, where Jaboulet's Hermitage la Chapelle 1961 is among the mythical bottles. The Châteauneuf du Pape 1961 wines are powerful and age-worthy. In Alsace, the vintage is exceptional and Jean Hugel considered it the best of his career (surpassing even 1959). In the Loire, the 1961 wines are good and also enjoy an excellent reputation.
