Wine 1984

Vintage 1984

A modest vintage for Bordeaux wines, producing rather hard, tannic and acidic red Bordeaux wines. Two events explain this: a disrupted flowering in May (Merlot coulure) and a hurricane (Hortense) that struck the Bordeaux vineyards at the end of September, bringing rain and wind, and dashing the last hopes for the Merlot-dominant wines (the wines from the right bank appellations such as Saint-Émilion and Pomerol). The 1984 Burgundy wines fared no better: difficult flowering, August storms, cold and rain in September led to millerandage and heavy chaptalization of the wines, making them unappealing.

Our advice for buying a 1984 wine

The harvests of the cabernet sauvignons, having better withstood the conditions, could then take place, but the red wines, though age-worthy (such as the 1984 classified grand cru wines), proved to be quite acidic, austere and tannic (lacking the merlot to round them out and give them charm). Some properties on the Right Bank downgraded their production, and even Château Pétrus produced only 20% of its usual harvest. In Bordeaux sweet wines Sauternes, 1984 yielded some elegant wines, but the vintage will not remain in memory.

As for Champagne, Rhône Valley wines, Loire wines or Alsace wines, the 1984 vintage is of little interest.

If your choice relates to 1984 wines (a wine ready to drink and to offer as an anniversary vintage), please note that the 1984 Bordeaux wines are intensely coloured (cabernet sauvignon) but that the weakness of the merlot gives them a tight profile, lacking a little of the undeniable charm found in great Bordeaux wines at maturity. In other regions, the 1984 vintage is considered weak.
