A small vintage for Bordeaux wines, yielding fairly hard, tannic and acidic red Bordeaux wines. Two events explain this: a disrupted flowering in May (coulure of the merlot) and a cyclone (Hortense) that struck the Bordeaux vineyards at the end of September, bringing its rains and winds, and sweeping away the last hopes for the merlot-dominant wines (the wines from the right bank such as the appellations Saint Emilion and Pomerol). The Burgundy wines of 1984 were no more spared: the difficult flowering, August storms, the cold and rains of September having led to millerandage and heavy chaptalization of the wines, making them unattractive.
