History of Domaine Vega Sicilia

In 1848, a Basque landowner, Don Toribio Lecanda, met the bankrupt Marquis de Valbuena and bought one of his vast estates in the western part of the Ribera del Duero wine region: Pago de la Vega Santa Cecilia y Carrascal, which then covered 2,000 hectares. The name was later shortened to “Vega Sicilia.”

It was his son, Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, a Bordeaux wine enthusiast with a particular fondness for the Médoc terroir, who planted the first vines in the late 19th century. He introduced noble grape varieties previously unknown in Ribera del Duero—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec—as well as Spanish Tempranillo. By 1882, the Ribera del Duero plains already had more than 500,000 vines.

In 1904, Domingo Garramiola, a key figure in Vega Sicilia’s history, began applying Bordeaux winemaking and aging techniques. His work bore fruit in 1915 with the creation of the estate’s two legendary cuvées: Unico and Valbuena. The owners at the time, the Herrero family, reserved their wines for a select circle of friends, forging the legend of exclusivity that still surrounds Vega Sicilia today.

After the Spanish Civil War, the estate went through several decades of transition. Under the Álvarez family’s leadership since 1982, it has reached new heights of worldwide renown. Pablo Álvarez, its current head, upholds exacting standards in both vineyard and cellar, furthering its constant pursuit of excellence.

Thanks to its exceptional qualities, Vega Sicilia drew attention to the Ribera del Duero region in the 1980s and contributed significantly to the wine region’s recognition with the protected designation of origin Denominación de Origen, dramatically raising the profile and reputation of its vineyards as a whole. Today, Vega Sicilia is a member of Primum Familiae Vini, an association bringing together twelve of the world’s most prestigious wine estates.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Vega Sicilia

Vega Sicilia’s vineyards enjoy a privileged location at an elevation of 700 to 900 meters in the Ribera del Duero wine region. They cover nearly 210 hectares, approximately 140 of which are devoted exclusively to producing the house’s finest wines. The property as a whole is an estate of nearly 1,000 hectares, only a fraction of which is planted with vines.

Vega Sicilia’s terroir is remarkably rich and complex. Clay-limestone, gravelly, and alluvial soils alternate, giving the wines their distinctive complexity and structure. This mosaic of soils yields different expressions from parcel to parcel and contributes to the harmonious blending of the cuvées. For Unico, the vines grow in predominantly sandy-gravelly soils over a quartz subsoil, allowing exceptional drainage and slow, ideal ripening of the grapes. For Valbuena, the parcels lie on the hillsides bordering the Duero River, on colluvial soils with a deep calcium-rich layer that favors a pure expression of Tempranillo.

The climate is distinctly continental, with cold winters and hot summers tempered by the altitude. The estate receives little rainfall and abundant sunshine, while the Duero brings morning mists that preserve the freshness essential to the wines’ aromatic complexity. The difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures, sometimes exceeding 20°C, is key to slow ripening, concentrating aromas while preserving remarkable natural acidity.

The 210 hectares of vines are planted with three grape varieties: Tempranillo, also known locally as Tinto Fino (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The estate manages all its vineyards sustainably, testing various biodynamic approaches on certain parcels without seeking official certification, out of a deep respect for natural balance.

Winemaking at Domaine Vega Sicilia

Vega Sicilia’s winemaking philosophy rests on one fundamental principle: letting time do its work. Every harvest is carried out by hand, with rigorous selection cluster by cluster. After gentle destemming, the grapes undergo slow fermentation, encouraging gentle extraction of aromas and tannins.

Unico ferments at a controlled temperature in large wooden vats, using native yeasts preserved in the vineyards for generations. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in wood, ensuring that all the wine’s components integrate gradually and harmoniously.

Aging, a true hallmark of Vega Sicilia, is exceptionally complex. The wines spend extended periods in various vessels: new and used French and American oak barrels, as well as large oak casks. The aim is to give the wine a silky tannic structure, seemingly endless aromatic complexity, and extraordinary aging potential.

For the Unico cuvée, aging proceeds through successive stages in different vessels: French and American oak, 225-liter barrels, then large oak casks. Under normal circumstances, the wine spends six years in wood and four in bottle—a full decade before release. A commitment without equal in the world of wine.

Each year, the estate makes its own barrels to maintain full control over the quality of the wood and its influence on the wines. This complete command of the process, from vine to cork, reflects an uncompromising commitment to quality. Some vintages deemed inadequate are simply not released under Vega Sicilia labels—a rare decision in the wine world that further enhances the prestige of every bottle brought to market.

The Cuvées of Domaine Vega Sicilia

Vega Sicilia Único Gran Reserva

Único is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after and legendary bottles in the world of wine. The estate’s flagship wine, Unico comes from a meticulous selection of 40 parcels and spends a total of ten years aging before release—one of the longest aging periods in the world for an exceptional wine. The Unico blend is dominated by Tinto Fino (Tempranillo, approximately 94%), with a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. After fermentation, this red wine undergoes what is probably the longest barrel-aging process in the world, spending almost ten years between wooden vats and the bottle.

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial

Reserva Especial is the most exclusive wine produced at Vega Sicilia. Always a blend of three exceptional vintages, the oldest of which must be at least twenty years old, this cuvée sometimes takes as long as twenty years from harvest to bottling. It is the ultimate expression of the estate’s philosophy of patience and excellence: a timeless creation unconstrained by any single vintage. Each Reserva Especial is numbered and leaves the cellar only when the winemaker considers the blend perfectly balanced.

Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5° Año

Valbuena 5° Año is the first step into the world of Vega Sicilia—and what an introduction! It is Vega Sicilia’s purest expression of Tinto Fino. After fermentation with native yeasts, the wine spends five years aging in wood and bottle, hence its name. The blend consists mainly of Tempranillo, complemented by a proportion of Merlot that varies by vintage.

Alión

Created in 1991 in the Ribera del Duero appellation, the Alión cuvée represents the Álvarez family’s contemporary vision. This wine comes from a rigorous selection of the property’s terroirs, where fully ripe grapes, combined with aging in barrels and concrete vats, produce a distinctive, complex wine with supple, elegant tannins, appealing red-fruit aromas, and mineral notes reminiscent of pencil lead.

Pintia

Located in the Toro Denominación de Origen, the Pintia estate embodies the meeting of Castilian terroir’s raw power and the Álvarez family’s characteristic refinement. Made entirely from Tinta de Toro, a local variety of Tempranillo, this wine displays impressive aromatic complexity and concentration. Black fruit, spices, and scrubland herbs dominate its aromatic profile. Pintia is aged in French (75%) and American (25%) oak barrels, a combination that tempers the grape’s natural power while lending it an elegance rare in the Toro appellation. 

Macán and Macán Clásico

The Macán project began when Benjamin and Ariane de Rothschild met Pablo Álvarez of Vega Sicilia. Together, they quietly assembled a 120-hectare vineyard in Rioja Alta, buying parcels from small farmers and focusing on the finest terroirs, with calcareous clay soils and Tempranillo vines aged 25 to 80 years.
