The Story of Franck Balthazar

Franck Balthazar perpetuates a family heritage initiated in 1931 by his grandfather, Casimir Balthazar, who founded the estate and acquired the mythical Chaillots plot. After years in the textile and then metallurgy industries, Franck returned to Cornas in 2002 to take over the helm of the estate, succeeding his father René, who had modernised the bottling process in the 1970s. Inspired by figures such as Auguste Clape and Thierry Allemand, Franck introduced an organic approach from 2010, obtaining certification in 2013. His commitment to respectful viticulture and his talent for sublimating the terroir make him a key figure in Cornas.

Terroirs and Vines of Franck Balthazar

Franck Balthazar cultivates approximately 4 hectares of vines on the steep hillsides of Cornas, where the granitic soils give the Syrah their mineral signature. His plots include:

Chaillot (1.4 ha): century-old vines, planted as early as 1914, partly inherited from Noël Verset, offering a unique aromatic complexity.

Mazards (0.4 ha): vines from 1961, bringing power and finesse.

Lègre (1.7 ha): planted in 2005 on reconstructed terraces, these younger vines contribute freshness. In 2013, Franck expanded his estate with a plot in Saint-Péray, on argilo-granitic soils. Working alone, he tills his vines with a pickaxe, a winch or a horse, banning all chemical products in favour of natural treatments (sulphur and copper in homeopathic doses). This certified organic approach preserves the balance of the vineyard and the pure expression of the terroir.

Winemaking at Franck Balthazar

Franck Balthazar's winemaking is a model of tradition and minimalism. Whole-cluster harvests, fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks, last approximately two weeks with manual punch-downs. The ageing, carried out in demi-muids (600 litres) at least 10 years old, avoids any oak influence to preserve the purity of the fruit. Without fining or filtration, and with minimal use of sulphur, Franck produces vibrant wines that are true to their origin. His no-added-sulphite cuvée, drawn from a single barrel, bears witness to his boldness and his pursuit of authenticity.

Franck Balthazar's Cuvées

Franck Balthazar offers a range of cuvées that capture the essence of Cornas and beyond, all marked by his elegant and natural style:

Cornas Chaillot

Crafted from the century-old Chaillot vines, complemented by a touch of Mazards, this flagship cuvée, aged 18 months, reveals aromas of dark fruits, violet and spices, with fine tannins and a brilliant minerality. A great fine wine for cellaring.

Cornas Casimir

In homage to his grandfather, this cuvée blends the Syrah from Mazards and Lègre. Accessible earlier, it offers notes of blackcurrant, cherry and eucalyptus, with a silky texture. Aged 12 to 18 months.

Cornas No Added Sulphites

From the young vines of Lègre, this limited cuvée, aged 14 months without sulphites, shines with its freshness and intense fruitiness, ideal for lovers of natural wines.

Côtes du Rhône

Produced from organic vines near Vinsobres (75% Syrah, 25% Grenache), this indulgent cuvée, aged 10 months in fibreglass tanks, captivates with its red fruit aromas and vivacity.

Saint-Péray

From the plot acquired in 2013, this rare cuvée, vinified in a concrete tank, expresses floral and mineral notes, a reflection of the argilo-granitic soils.

Franck Balthazar's cuvées, whether the prestigious Cornas Chaillot or the approachable Côtes du Rhône, embody the elegance and purity of natural wines. Certified organic, hand-crafted and vinified with care, this estate is an invitation to discover the Rhône Valley at its most sincere.
