Roberto Voerzio is one of the most acclaimed winemakers in Piedmont and a major figure in modern Barolo. Based in La Morra, at the heart of the Langhe, he has built a cult wine estate by assembling a remarkable collection of the appellation's most prestigious crus — Brunate, Cerequio, La Serra, Rocche dell'Annunziata, Sarmassa, and Fossati. A pioneer of high-density planting and extremely low yields, he crafts rich, intense Barolo wines from Nebbiolo, built for ageing, complemented by remarkable Barbera, Dolcetto, Langhe Nebbiolo and Merlot.
Born in 1954, Roberto Voerzio is one of the most gifted winemakers of his generation. A man of strong character, he parted ways with his brother Gianni, with whom he had started out, and founded his own estate in 1986 in La Morra, inheriting a few hectares of his father's vineyards. At the time he had only a modest surface area at his disposal, but an immense ambition drove him forward.
Through talent and tenacity, Roberto Voerzio has gradually expanded his estate by acquiring some of the most renowned historic crus of La Morra and the surrounding area. A visionary, he was one of the first of his era to plant his vines at very high density and to practise drastic crop thinning in order to concentrate the quality of the grapes. His wines quickly became cult references, sought after by enthusiasts and collectors from around the world. Today, Roberto continues his work supported by his son, in the same pursuit of excellence.
The estate cultivates parcels among the best-situated in La Morra, one of the sub-zones considered the most elegant in Barolo, on sandy-clay soils of Tortonian origin. The house's emblematic crus include Brunate, Cerequio, La Serra, Rocche dell'Annunziata, Sarmassa, Fossati, Case Nere and Capalot — exceptional terroirs assembled over the decades.
Roberto Voerzio's signature lies in his very high-density vine cultivation, from eight thousand to eleven thousand plants per hectare — nearly one and a half times the region's usual density. Yields are deliberately minuscule, achieved through severe green harvesting that can reduce the crop to just a few bunches per vine. This obsessive pursuit of concentration and balance, nourished by frequent trips to Bordeaux and Burgundy, defines the entire singularity of the estate.
In the cellar, the wines are made through spontaneous fermentations carried out by indigenous yeasts, lasting around fifteen to thirty days in vats. The nebbiolo and barbera are then aged in a blend of large Slavonian oak casks of various sizes and a small proportion of French barriques, with large-vessel ageing having taken an increasingly prominent role over time in order to gain even greater finesse.
The Barolos generally spend around twenty-four months in wood, followed by several months in vat and then in bottle before release. The use of sulphur is reduced to less than half the permitted dose, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Certain prestige cuvées, such as the Riserva Fossati Case Nere 10 Anni, are only released after a decade of patience, and large-format bottles slumber in the cellar awaiting their peak.
Barolo Brunate: one of the estate's landmark crus — structured and deep, it blossoms with time. Powerful and complex, it is an absolute benchmark for nebbiolo from La Morra.
Barolo Cerequio: a grand cru neighbouring Brunate, with a assertive structure and great elegance, frequently cited among the pinnacles of the estate's production.
Barolo La Serra: a fine and expressive Barolo, vinified from pure nebbiolo, combining fragrance, freshness and harmony.
Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Torriglione: from a sector renowned for its fine and expansive wines, this is a cuvée of great aromatic delicacy, sometimes compared to the finest terroirs of Burgundy.
Barolo Sarmassa di Barolo: a cuvée from the Sarmassa cru, in the commune of Barolo, dense and rich, with fine ageing potential.
Barolo Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate Riserva: an exceptional Riserva from old vines in the Capalot and Brunate crus, of remarkable intensity and concentration.
Barolo Fossati Case Nere Riserva 10 Anni: a mythical cuvée from the Fossati and Case Nere crus, released only after ten years of ageing and patience, with the 2003 vintage as its first release.
Barolo del Comune di La Morra: a Barolo that is in some sense a blend, bringing together several crus such as La Serra, Fossati, Cerequio, Rocche dell'Annunziata and Case Nere — elegant and representative of the estate's style.
RV350: an extremely rare cuvée produced only in selected vintages, drawn notably from Rocche dell'Annunziata and Case Nere, with a harvest limited to around three hundred grams per vine — just three bunches per plant.
Barbera d'Alba Pozzo dell'Annunziata: a legendary barbera from the Pozzo dell'Annunziata cru, deep and delicate, which transfigures this grape variety and ranks among the greatest barberas of Piedmont.
Barbera d'Alba: the estate's second barbera cuvée — indulgent and vibrant, with brilliant fruit and a tonic acidity.
Dolcetto d'Alba Priavino: a dolcetto from high-density vines, supple and fruity, to be enjoyed for its youthfulness and generosity.
Langhe Nebbiolo: a more accessible cuvée crafted from nebbiolo, offering a fine introduction to the estate's style — aromatic and harmonious.
Langhe Merlot: a red wine made from merlot, demonstrating Roberto Voerzio's ability to excel beyond the traditional Piedmontese grape varieties, in a round and deep style.
