History of Domaine Berthelemot

The history of Domaine Berthelemot begins in 2006–2007, when Brigitte Berthelemot, a late convert to wine who fell in love with the great Burgundian climats at the age of 32, decided to create her own wine estate by bringing together the vines of two neighbouring former properties, those of Jean Garaudet and then those of Yves Darviot. Based in Meursault, her first range covered the appellations Meursault, Beaune, Pommard and Monthélie. From the very beginning, she surrounded herself with an experienced estate manager and winemaker, Marc Cugney, an ideal complement to her management skills.

In 2018, the estate took on a new dimension by doubling its surface area through the acquisition of the vines of Domaine Patrice Allexant in Merceuil. This operation allowed the estate to considerably broaden its range of appellations, with a notable entry into the Côte de Nuits (Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée), a strengthening of its presence in the Côte de Beaune (Savigny-lès-Beaune, Chorey-lès-Beaune, Volnay, Saint-Aubin) and an opening towards the Côte Chalonnaise (Rully). Thomas Berthelemot, Brigitte's son, then joined the estate to take charge of commercial matters and vineyard management. The organic conversion began in 2018 and culminated in organic certification in 2021, a major milestone in an environmental approach undertaken since the estate's very beginnings.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Berthelemot

The vineyard of Domaine Berthelemot today covers nearly 17 hectares, spread across an exceptional mosaic of appellations in the Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits and Côte Chalonnaise. The Côte de Beaune remains the historic heart of the estate, with plots in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Monthélie, Santenay, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Chorey-lès-Beaune. The Côte de Nuits enriches the range with plots in Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée. A Rully cuvée completes the offering on the Côte Chalonnaise side.

The soils, predominantly clay-limestone with a great diversity of profiles depending on the climat, offer an ideal ground for Burgundy's two emblematic grape varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The estate has been certified organic since the 2021 vintage, having previously obtained the Haute Valeur Environnementale certification. Cultivation is carried out in harmony with natural cycles and the plant, without the use of synthetic chemical products. The winery, located in Tailly in the Champs Lins zone, combines modern equipment and a scientific approach, complemented by a wine facility in Meursault.

Winemaking at Domaine Berthelemot

In the cellar, Domaine Berthelemot combines respect for Burgundian traditions with modern precision. Harvests are entirely manual, with rigorous sorting of the berries upon arrival at the winery. For white wines, pressing is gentle, followed by careful settling, then fermentation and ageing in French oak barrels. The proportion of new wood is adjusted plot by plot, in order to support the wine without masking the identity of the climat.

For red wines, winemaking is precise and minimally interventionist, with gentle extractions and maceration times adapted to each cuvée. Extended ageing in barrels allows the wines to gain in complexity and length. The estate pays particular attention to finesse and aromatic precision, the recognisable signature of the house, regularly acclaimed by the Bettane & Desseauve, Hachette, Bourgogne Aujourd'hui and Decanter guides.
