Located away from the old town, 400 meters from the train station, Il Cantiniere is an ambitious project: a wine shop over 400 m2, decorated in the old style - (woodwork and vertical storage) - but above all an exceptional wine bar and restaurant.
One does not expect such a level of cuisine in such a place: certainly it is not very Sicilian and slightly trendy, but with real interest and notably a superb Tuna Tartare with strawberries which makes an excellent pairing with Sicilian Nerello Mascalese.
The Wine List includes a thousand references that can be chosen on an iPad or in the store. Logically, many Sicilian wines but also a great selection of Barolo and super Tuscans (Solaia, Ornellaia, Sassicaia) and some French icons (Latour, Romanée Saint Vivant de la Romanée Conti).
Wine prices are sustained for Sicily, but remain affordable compared to an equivalent in France. A dozen wines are available by the glass.
Among the wines tasted:
In White
La Ferla Inzolia 2013: nice gourmet white with a relatively fresh finish.
Firriato quater 2011: blend of Grillo, Carricante, Cattarato, Zibbibo, slightly oaked: the muscat fruitiness is clearly felt, supported by beautiful acidity.
In Red
Rifusa Etna Rosso 2008 Nerello Mascalese and Capuccio: nose of wild strawberries, very fruity palate with the freshness characteristic of Etna wines.
Pinot Noir Tenuta San Michele Murgo 2010: very nice pinot with floral and black cherry aromas, slightly smoky; on the palate the alcohol is moderate (12.5%) and the acidity allows the wine to remain "airy", in a Burgundian style,
