The history of Domaine Quinta do Vale Meão

The story of Quinta do Vale Meão began with the visionary ambition of an exceptional woman, Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, who became one of the Douro’s largest landowners and one of Portugal’s wealthiest women in the 19th century. In 1877, when the Upper Douro was still inhospitable and sparsely cultivated, she embarked on an ambitious project: to create a model estate near Vila Nova de Foz Côa. She bought 300 hectares of uncultivated land, planted 150 hectares with vines and olive trees, and had two wineries built. It took Antónia Adelaide eight years to complete this monumental undertaking and lay the foundations for an exceptional winegrowing legacy.

For nearly a century, grapes from Quinta do Vale Meão went into the famous Barca-Velha Port, produced by A.A. Ferreira. In the 1970s, Francisco Javier de Olazabal, a direct descendant of Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, took charge of the property and began the long, patient process of buying out the many cousins who co-owned it. In 1994, he and his children became the estate’s sole owners, managing it through the new company F. Olazabal & Filhos. From 1999 onward, his son Francisco Olazabal, known as Francisco Xavier, began producing dry wines under the Quinta do Vale Meão label, becoming one of the pioneers of the Douro revolution. A prominent member of the Douro Boys, he brought the estate to the forefront of Portuguese winemaking, earning praise from the international press year after year.

The terroirs and vineyards of Domaine Quinta do Vale Meão

The Quinta do Vale Meão vineyard covers approximately 270 hectares in the heart of the Upper Douro, nestled within a broad bend (the “meandro”) in the Douro River that gives the estate its name. Its setting is unique: at an elevation of 150 meters on the river’s left bank, the estate enjoys ideal exposure and temperature variations conducive to optimal grape ripening. The soils offer rare geological diversity, combining schist, granite and alluvium to provide an ideal setting for each grape variety to express itself. This richness of soils has guided all the Olazabal family’s work: the right Portuguese grape variety for each plot.

The grape varieties planted reflect the Douro’s deeply rooted local identity. Touriga Nacional, considered by many experts to be the noblest Portuguese grape variety, takes center stage, alongside Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (the equivalent of Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca and Alicante Bouschet. A few white varieties (Rabigato, Viosinho, Arinto and Códega do Larinho) are also grown to produce Meandro Branco. The vines are carefully tended on steep, terraced slopes, with controlled yields. Harvesting is entirely by hand into small crates, with rigorous sorting in both the vineyard and the winery—essential to achieving the excellence Francisco Xavier seeks.

Winemaking at Domaine Quinta do Vale Meão

In the winery, Francisco Xavier Olazabal combines tradition with cutting-edge technology, guided by authenticity and precision. For the great reds, the grapes are crushed using the traditional Douro method: foot-trodden in granite lagares, low rectangular vats that allow gentle, precise extraction without damaging the berries. Long abandoned by some estates, this age-old technique remains a hallmark of Quinta do Vale Meão and gives its wines fine, silky, elegant tannins.

Fermentation then takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing precise control of temperatures. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a carefully managed proportion of new oak for the fine wine (up to 80% depending on the vintage), while Meandro is aged in used barrels. The Ports are made according to the appellation’s traditional methods, with fermentation stopped by the addition of grape spirit, followed by long maturation in barrels. The result is a cohesive, prestigious range in which each cuvée combines intensity, freshness and distinguished balance, true to the legacy of Antónia Adelaide Ferreira and the contemporary style of the Douro Boys.

The cuvées of Domaine Quinta do Vale Meão

Quinta do Vale Meão Tinto: the estate’s flagship fine wine, made only in the best vintages from its finest plots. Predominantly Touriga Nacional, blended with Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and sometimes Alicante Bouschet. Foot-trodden in lagares and aged in French oak barrels. Deep in color, with an intense nose of ripe black fruit, flowers, spices and slate-like mineral notes. Concentrated and elegant on the palate, with a long, precise finish. One of Portugal’s greatest red wines.

Meandro do Vale Meão Tinto: the estate’s second wine, named in tribute to the bend in the Douro River that encircles its vineyards. A typical blend of approximately 50% Touriga Nacional, 35% Touriga Franca and 10% Tinta Roriz, rounded out with Tinta Barroca and Alicante Bouschet, aged for about 14 months in used French oak barrels. Dark ruby in color, with aromas of black fruit (blackberry and blackcurrant), olives and dried herbs. Medium-bodied, with creamy tannins, saline freshness and an elegant finish. Excellent value within the range.

Meandro do Vale Meão Branco: the white version of the estate’s second wine, made from native grape varieties (Rabigato, Viosinho, Arinto, Códega do Larinho). Brilliant straw color, a floral and fruity nose of white flowers, yellow fruit and citrus, and a full, taut, fresh palate with the mineral character typical of the Douro. A polished expression of Portugal’s great white wines.

Monte Meão Vinha dos Novos: a single-parcel cuvée from Vinha dos Novos, one of the quinta’s emblematic plots. Carefully vinified to express the distinctive character of this terroir, with power and freshness, aromas of black fruit and spice, and an elegant finish.

Monte Meão Casa das Máquinas: another small-production single-parcel cuvée, with a distinctive profile shaped by the soils of the plot whose name it bears. A cuvée sought after by enthusiasts and collectors.

Monte Meão Cabeço Vermelho: a single-parcel cuvée from the Cabeço Vermelho site, whose reddish soils lend it a unique aromatic signature. Deep in color, with a nose of black fruit and slate-like minerality, and a structured, long-lasting palate.

Monte Meão Vinha da Cantina: a single-parcel cuvée from Vinha da Cantina, offering a precise, delicate expression of its terroir, with a fine structure and saline freshness.

Quinta do Vale Meão Vintage Port: the estate’s prestigious vintage Port, made only in exceptional vintages. Selected from its finest plots, it offers opulent aromas, magnificent intensity and extraordinary concentration, balanced by persistent freshness. Its aromatic complexity gives this Port the potential to age for several decades, in the great tradition of Upper Douro Vintage Ports.
