Quinta Do Vale Meao

Quinta do Vale Meão wines: buy at the best price

In the heart of the Douro Superior, near Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Quinta do Vale Meão is one of Portugal's most prestigious century-old wine estates. Founded in 1877 by the legendary Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, passed down through five generations within the same family, it is today run by Francisco Olazabal, one of the famous Douro Boys, who revolutionized the region's winemaking at the end of the 1990s. On schist, granite and alluvial soils, the estate cultivates Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and other indigenous grape varieties, producing exceptional Douro DOC wines (Quinta do Vale Meão, Meandro, Monte Meão) as well as great vintage Ports and tawnies, among the most sought-after in Portugal.

History of Quinta do Vale Meão Estate

The history of Quinta do Vale Meão was born of the visionary determination of an exceptional woman, Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, who became in the 19th century one of the greatest landowners in the Douro and one of the wealthiest women in Portugal. In 1877, at a time when the Upper Douro region was still inhospitable and largely uncultivated, she embarked on an ambitious project: to create a model estate near Vila Nova de Foz Côa. She purchased 300 hectares of uncultivated land, planted 150 hectares with vines and olive trees, and had two wineries built. It took Antónia Adelaide eight years to bring this titanic undertaking to fruition and to lay the foundations of an exceptional viticultural heritage.

For nearly a century, the grapes from Quinta do Vale Meão supplied the celebrated Barca-Velha Port wine, produced by the house of A.A. Ferreira. In the 1970s, Francisco Javier de Olazabal, a direct descendant of Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, took over the management of the property and embarked on the long and patient process of buying back the shares held by the many co-owning cousins. In 1994, he and his children became the sole owners of the estate, henceforth managed by the new company F. Olazabal & Filhos. From 1999 onwards, his son Francisco Olazabal, known as Francisco Xavier, began producing dry wines under the Quinta do Vale Meão label, thus becoming one of the pioneers of the Douro revolution. A prominent member of the Douro Boys, he has elevated the estate to the very top rank of great Portuguese signatures, celebrated each year by the international press.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Quinta do Vale Meão Estate

The vineyard of Quinta do Vale Meão extends over approximately 270 hectares at the heart of the Douro Superior, nestled within a vast meander (the "meandro") of the Douro river that gives the estate its name. The geographical situation is unique: at 150 metres of altitude, on the left bank of the river, the estate benefits from an ideal exposure and thermal amplitudes conducive to perfect grape ripening. The soils offer a rare geological diversity, combining schist, granite and alluvial deposits, providing each grape variety with the ideal matrix for its expression. This pedological richness has guided all the work of the Olazabal family: to each plot, the right Portuguese grape variety.

The grape varieties reflect the deeply autochthonous identity of the Douro. Touriga Nacional, considered by many experts to be the noblest of Portuguese grape varieties, plays a central role, complemented by Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (the equivalent of Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca and Alicante Bouschet. A few white varieties (Rabigato, Viosinho, Arinto, Códega do Larinho) are also cultivated for the production of the Meandro Branco. Vineyard management is rigorous, on steep hillsides arranged in terraces, with controlled yields. Harvesting is entirely manual, in small crates, with strict sorting both in the vineyard and in the cellar — an essential condition for achieving the excellence pursued by Francisco Xavier.

Winemaking at Quinta do Vale Meão Estate

In the cellar, Francisco Xavier Olazabal combines tradition and ultra-modern technique in a pursuit of authenticity and precision. For the great reds, crushing is carried out according to the traditional Douro method: the grapes are foot-trodden in granite lagares, those low rectangular vats that allow gentle and precise extraction without damaging the berries. This ancestral technique, long abandoned by some estates, has remained the signature of Quinta do Vale Meão and ensures the wines a fine, silky and elegant tannic structure.

Fermentations then take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing perfect temperature management. Ageing is carried out in French oak barrels, with a controlled proportion of new wood for the Fine Wine (up to 80% depending on the vintage), while the Meandro is aged in used barrels. For the Ports, vinification follows the classic rules of the appellation, with fortification using grape spirit and long maturation in casks. The result is a coherent and prestigious range, in which each cuvée combines intensity, freshness and noble balance, faithful to the heritage of Antónia Adelaide Ferreira and the contemporary signature of the Douro Boys.

The Cuvées of Quinta do Vale Meão Estate

Quinta do Vale Meão Tinto: the fine wine and flagship of the estate, produced only in the finest vintages from the most exceptional plots of the property. A majority blend of Touriga Nacional, complemented by Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and occasionally Alicante Bouschet. Foot-trodden in lagares, aged in French oak barrels. Deep robe, intense nose of ripe dark fruits, flowers, spices and slate mineral notes, a concentrated and elegant palate with a long and precise finish. One of the greatest red wines of Portugal.

Meandro do Vale Meão Tinto: the second wine of the estate, named in homage to the meander of the Douro that encircles the vineyards. A typical blend of approximately 50% Touriga Nacional, 35% Touriga Franca, 10% Tinta Roriz, complemented by Tinta Barroca and Alicante Bouschet, aged for approximately 14 months in used French oak barrels. Deep ruby robe, nose of dark fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), olives and dried herbs, medium-bodied palate with creamy tannins and saline freshness, elegant finish. An excellent value for money in the range.

Meandro do Vale Meão Branco: the white version of the second wine, made from indigenous grape varieties (Rabigato, Viosinho, Arinto, Códega do Larinho). Brilliant straw-coloured robe, floral and fruity nose (white flowers, yellow fruits, citrus), a taut, ample and fresh palate with the mineral texture typical of the Douro. A refined expression of great Portuguese white wines.

Monte Meão Vinha dos Novos: a single-vineyard cuvée from Vinha dos Novos, one of the iconic plots of the quinta. Carefully vinified to express the uniqueness of this terroir, with a powerful and fresh structure, aromas of dark fruits and spices, and an elegant finish.

Monte Meão Casa das Máquinas: another confidential single-vineyard cuvée, expressing a singular profile, marked by the soils of the plot of the same name. A sought-after cuvée among enthusiasts and collectors.

Monte Meão Cabeço Vermelho: a single-vineyard cuvée from the lieu-dit Cabeço Vermelho, whose reddish soils impart a unique aromatic signature. Deep robe, nose of dark fruits and slate minerality, structured and long palate.

Monte Meão Vinha da Cantina: a single-vineyard cuvée from Vinha da Cantina, a precise and delicate expression of the terroir, with a fine structure and saline freshness.

Quinta do Vale Meão Vintage Port: a great vintage Port from the estate, produced only in exceptional years. Sourced from a selection of the finest plots, it offers opulent aromas, magnificent intensity and extraordinary concentration, balanced by a persistent freshness. The aromatic complexity of this Port guarantees ageing potential of several decades, in the great tradition of Vintage Ports from the Douro Superior.

Olazabal Finest Reserve Port: a Reserve Port crafted in the family's signature style — fruity, elegant and harmonious. A seductive entry point into the estate's Port universe, ideal as an aperitif or alongside chocolate desserts.

Meandro Finest Reserve Porto: a Reserve Port from the Meandro range, sharing the same philosophy of accessible quality. Deep ruby robe, nose of red and black fruits, round and generous palate, long and warm finish.

10 Anos Tawny Porto: a Tawny Port aged 10 years in casks, the classic signature of the estate's oxidative ageing. Amber robe, complex nose of dried fruits, honey, caramel, orange peel and walnuts, a sweet palate balanced by the house's characteristic freshness, long and refined finish.
