History of Domaine Pierre Ménard

The story of Domaine Pierre Ménard is one of a return to roots after a long initiatory journey through the world's vineyards. Son of a family of cooperative winegrowers established around Faye-d'Anjou, Pierre grew up in contact with the family vines. Armed with dual training in viticulture-oenology and an agricultural engineering degree, he decided to open himself to the world before taking up the torch.

His travels take him to the greatest vineyards on the planet: the Douro Valley in Portugal at Ramos Pinto, the prestigious cellars of Tokaj in Hungary, the vineyards of Canada, New Zealand, and finally the culminating experience with the mythical Château Latour in Pauillac, Gironde. So many formative experiences that enrich his vision of wine, sharpen his sense of terroir, and forge a philosophy resolutely oriented toward the pure expression of place and the sobriety of human intervention.

In 2013, Pierre Ménard returned to his native land with a clear ambition: to reveal the extraordinary potential of the family parcels. He started the estate with only 20 ares of century-old vines planted on the hillside of Quart des Noëls, in Faye-d'Anjou. This first vintage, produced in confidential quantity and quickly acclaimed by Loire wine enthusiasts, launched an adventure that has never wavered. Gradually, the estate expanded through the acquisition of new parcels selected with the rigor of a geologist, to reach approximately five hectares today. From the outset, Pierre works his vines alone, in the manner of a great garden, with the patience and meticulousness of a craftsman.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Pierre Ménard

Domaine Pierre Ménard is located on the north bank of the Layon, in the hamlet of La Vallet in Faye-d'Anjou, in the Maine-et-Loire department (49). This privileged geographical location offers the vines a predominantly south and southeast exposure on steep hillsides, guaranteeing optimal ripeness of the grapes while preserving the freshness and tension so characteristic of the estate's wines.

The singularity of Pierre Ménard's terroir lies in the remarkable geological diversity of his parcels. The soils consist mainly of schists in different forms: spilites (purple schists of volcanic origin), phtanites (blue schists, metamorphic rocks of great hardness), and sandy schists crossed with quartz veins. This geological mosaic, worthy of a petrography textbook, is Pierre Ménard's primary passion, whose training as an agricultural engineer is coupled with a true fascination for geology. Each rock transmits its own mineral signature to the wine, making each cuvée a faithful portrait of its parcel of origin.

The estate today covers approximately five hectares, divided into four hectares of Chenin blanc, sixty ares of Sauvignon blanc and gris, and forty ares of Cabernet franc. The vines are often old, some planted from the 1920s, forming individual vines of incomparable genetic richness, resulting from ancestral massal selections. Pierre Ménard cultivates this entire vineyard in certified organic agriculture, with the precepts of biodynamics as a guide: observation of lunar cycles, treatments exclusively based on natural preparations, hand cultivation of the soil, total absence of herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers.

Vinifications at Domaine Pierre Ménard

In the vineyard as in the cellar, Pierre Ménard's philosophy rests on a fundamental principle: intervene as little as possible to allow each terroir to express itself freely. Harvesting is entirely done by hand, with rigorous selection of grapes to retain only perfectly ripe fruit. The yields, deliberately very low, concentrate the vine's energy into a few bunches of remarkable quality.

In the cellar, the grapes are pressed slowly and gently to preserve the finesse of the juices. Fermentations are conducted exclusively with indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grape skins and in the cellar, without adding exogenous yeasts. This approach, more complex to master, guarantees fermentation that faithfully expresses the character of the terroir and the vintage. Aging takes place in barrels from several wines, for a duration of approximately ten months on lees, without any oenological addition. The wines are then bottled without fining or filtration, to preserve the entirety of their substance and aromatic potential.

The attention to detail does not stop at vinification. Pierre Ménard personally designs the labels for his cuvées, often inspired by his other passion, astronomy, hence the names of planets and stars that christen several of his wines. The bottles are all hand-waxed, a sign of an embraced craftsmanship and extreme care given to every detail of production.

The cuvées of Domaine Pierre Ménard

Le Quart des Noëls

Le Quart des Noëls is the estate's founding cuvée, the one that started it all in 2013. It comes from a micro-parcel of 2,000 m² planted with Chenin blanc from the 1920s, on the eponymous hillside of Faye-d'Anjou. Each vine, trained in gobelet according to Angevin tradition, is an individual in its own right, resulting from century-old massal selections of irreplaceable genetic richness. The sandy schist soil crossed with quartz veins gives the wine striking tension and minerality.

Le Clos des Mailles

Le Clos des Mailles comes from a confidential parcel whose subsoil combines schist, quartz, and phtanite, this rare blue metamorphic rock that marks exceptional geology. This unique lithological combination gives birth to a Chenin blanc of great complexity, combining beautiful fruit maturity and intense mineral energy. The wine stands out for its straight structure, its tension on the palate, and its remarkable aging potential. An essential cuvée for those seeking to explore the diversity of Angevin schistose terroir and the richness of dry white Loire wines.

Pluton

Pluton is an intra-parcel cuvée, born from a selection made within Le Clos des Mailles itself, on the richest phtanite area of the parcel. Pierre Ménard only produces it when the vintage allows, making it one of the rarest and most sought-after cuvées of the estate. Phtanite, a blue rock of marine origin resulting from silica precipitation, imparts to the wine a singular, vibrant, and deep volcanic minerality.

La Varenne de Chanzé

La Varenne de Chanzé is one of the estate's most recent cuvées and already one of the most sought-after. It comes from a parcel neighboring Le Clos des Mailles, but located on the south-facing slope of the hillside that descends toward the Layon and the Château de Chanzé. The geology is slightly different there: different schists, a presence of spilite (purple volcanic schist), without phtanite on this slope. The result is an intense and deep Chenin blanc, gourmet and chiseled, that expresses itself in a register of candied citrus, lemon tart, and ripe white-fleshed fruits, with remarkable tension and persistent freshness.

Laïka

Laïka is the surprise cuvée of the estate, born from a parcel of fifty-year-old Sauvignon blanc and gris planted at the top of Clos de la Roche, on a schist hillside. Where one might expect an expressive and fruity Sauvignon in a classic Loire style, Pierre Ménard delivers a wine of an entirely different dimension: saline, taut, long on the palate, with a pure expression of schist that recalls a great Chenin more than a conventional Sauvignon. The color is pale with green reflections; the nose evokes fresh citrus, white flowers, and a touch of chalk. On the palate, salinity and liveliness dominate, for a finish of great aromatic persistence.

Cosmos

Cosmos is the sweet side of the estate, a sweet Chenin blanc crafted with the same rigor as the dry cuvées. The wine combines with remarkable subtlety the natural sweetness of residual sugars, the liveliness of the acidity inherent to Anjou Chenin, and a persistent freshness that avoids any feeling of heaviness. Aromas of candied fruits, acacia honey, and dried flowers blend with mineral nuances characteristic of schist. Cosmos is a sweet wine of great elegance, ideal to accompany foie gras, Roquefort, or fruit desserts, but also capable of beautiful longevity in the cellar.

Orion Alpha

Orion Alpha is the estate's only red cuvée, made from Cabernet franc planted on the schistose parcels of Faye-d'Anjou. It is a maceration wine, conducted with great precision, that expresses the fruit in all its purity: juicy black and red fruits, sweet spices, with a floral touch characteristic of Loire Cabernet franc. The palate is supple, digestible, of natural elegance, with fine tannins and beautiful acidity that lengthens the finish.
