Alexandre Grimée

Wines from Champagne Alexandre Grimée: buy at the best price

Nestled at the western edge of Champagne, halfway between Reims and Paris, Champagne Alexandre Grimée embodies the spirit of the artisan winemaker in its purest form. On a single hectare of vines located in Azy-sur-Marne and Bonneil, this micro-estate in the Marne Valley cultivates almost exclusively Pinot Meunier, the emblematic and long-overlooked grape variety of this corner of Champagne. Certified organic since the 2023 harvest, the estate produces small-batch cuvées, vinified with restraint and most often as brut nature, expressing the freshness of the fruit and a saline minerality.

History of Champagne Alexandre Grimée

The grandson of a winegrower, Alexandre Grimée was born in 1988 in the Vallée de la Marne, the heartland of Pinot Meunier. He took over the family estate in 2010 and vinified his very first cuvée in 2014, at only twenty-five years of age, from vines planted by his grandparents as far back as 1973. From this founding act emerged a deeply personal approach, summed up by his motto: artisan du vivant sur un hectare. Working his vineyard alone in a spirit of respect, humility and constant self-questioning, Alexandre describes himself at the cellar as a discreet but far from inactive guide, from the grape to the finished bottle.

His only guiding principle can be summed up in a single word: adaptability. Each year sets its own rules, and each vintage must express its own character, without any fixed recipe. This philosophy oriented towards the living world has logically led the estate to organic certification, obtained at the 2023 harvest. Based in Azy-sur-Marne, on the banks of the Marne where the hillsides rise to the edge of the woods, the estate draws its grapes from the neighbouring village of Bonneil, from plots that have become the heart of a rare and sought-after artisanal production.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Champagne Alexandre Grimée

The terroir of Champagne Alexandre Grimée spreads across five plots, four of which are in Bonneil and one in Romeny-sur-Marne, together forming a natural amphitheatre with a full south-facing exposure and slopes that are sometimes surprisingly steep for Champagne. The historic plot, Sous les Trous, covers sixty ares planted predominantly with Pinot Meunier, with a touch of Pinot Noir, on a subsoil of middle Bartonian limestone blending Saint-Ouen limestone and beige marl. Alongside it, Sur les Raids (twenty-five ares of Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and fallow land), Les Douaires (twelve ares of Pinot Meunier facing east on a slope reaching 45%), Le Vivier (six ares) and Le Village, in Romeny-sur-Marne (three ares), complete this miniature vineyard.

This clay-limestone terroir, situated in a little-known part of the western Vallée de la Marne, lends the wines a singular signature, balancing the fruity roundness of Meunier with a refreshing mineral tension. Vineyard work is entirely manual: zero herbicides, sexual confusion against pests and soil hoeing, in the greatest respect for nature. The minuscule yields and the age of the vines — some of which are over fifty years old — yield grapes of great maturity and beautiful freshness, the foundation of the estate's cuvées.

Winemaking at Champagne Alexandre Grimée

Winemaking at Champagne Alexandre Grimée is based on spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, a guarantee of fidelity to the terroir. Depending on the cuvée and the vintage, the wines are aged in stainless steel tanks, to preserve the brightness and freshness of the Pinot Meunier, or in 228- and 350-litre oak barrels, which bring depth and texture. Malolactic fermentation is sometimes carried out and sometimes blocked, depending on the profile of each vintage, in order to maintain the desired balance between vinosity and minerality.

True to a minimal-intervention approach, Alexandre Grimée leaves his wines unfined and unfiltered, and favours long ageing on lees before disgorgement. The vast majority of cuvées are offered as brut nature, without dosage, to deliver the wine in its most unadorned truth. Each bottle, often numbered, bears witness to an artisanal winemaking process in which nothing is left to chance and where the expression of Meunier takes precedence over stylistic effect.

The cuvées of Champagne Alexandre Grimée

Sous les Trous is the founding cuvée and the signature of the estate, a 100% Pinot Meunier Champagne sourced from the single eponymous plot in Bonneil, south-facing and planted in 1973. Produced vintage by vintage (2014, 2016, 2018, 2019 and then 2022), it is crafted from the cœurs de cuvée — the finest juices — to capture the character of each year. Depending on the vintage, ageing takes place in stainless steel tank or barrel, with or without malolactic fermentation, and always without dosage at disgorgement. Its clear robe with lemon highlights, its fine bubbles, its nose of citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit) lifted by notes of chalk and flint, and its palate that is simultaneously supple, vinous and fresh make for a Meunier without mask or artifice — broad, saline and of great purity. Produced in just a few thousand bottles, this is a confidential cuvée.

Corpus is a Champagne Blanc de Noirs brut nature, likewise 100% Pinot Meunier, crafted from the blending of four plots of the estate in Bonneil. Vinified in tank, without malolactic fermentation, it benefits from approximately thirty months of ageing on lees before disgorgement without dosage. Its straw robe, its vibrant nose of fresh apple and pear, its very fine stream of bubbles and its elegant, lively and delicately lemony palate mark a wine of great purity, not particularly vinous but of exceptional drinkability. This rare cuvée illustrates the Meunier grape's ability to produce fine, taut wines.

Les Douaires is a Coteaux Champenois — that is, a still (non-sparkling) wine of the appellation — crafted from 100% Pinot Meunier sourced from the eponymous plot in Bonneil, planted in 1989 and east-facing on a slope that can reach 45%. The grapes, hand-harvested at full ripeness, are destemmed and then macerated in stainless steel tank (three days at 12°C followed by an eight-day maceration) before ageing in 228-litre barrels. This confidential red wine, bottled in very small quantities, reveals another facet of Pinot Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne — centred on fruit, finesse and the freshness of the terroir.
