Frequently Asked Questions

Château Haut-Marbuzet enjoys an excellent reputation in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, to the point of being often considered one of the best Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels of the Médoc. Led for decades by Henri Duboscq, then by his sons, the estate has distinguished itself through a generous and full-bodied style, with 100% new oak barrel ageing that gives it an aromatic signature unlike any other. Lovers of left bank Bordeaux wines regularly cite it as a reliable value, combining immediate pleasure with a remarkable ageing potential.

Château Haut-Marbuzet stands out clearly from the classic, tannic profile often associated with Saint-Estèphe. Where the appellation is renowned for its austere structure and long ageing potential, Haut-Marbuzet offers a rounder, more immediately seductive wine, with aromas of ripe dark fruits, vanilla and soft spices inherited from its full ageing in new oak barrels. Merlot, well represented in the blend alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, contributes to this velvety texture and relative accessibility in youth, while retaining the ageing potential inherent to the terroir.

Château Haut-Marbuzet does not appear in the official 1855 Médoc Grand Cru Classé classification, which remains fixed in time and has undergone only one revision, in 1973. However, the estate is recognised as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, the highest distinction within the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc classification, which has been regularly renewed by vintage since 2020. This distinction, consistently achieved, bears witness to the château's impeccable quality and confers upon it a legitimacy comparable, in the eyes of many enthusiasts, to that of several official Crus Classés.

Among the estate's great historical successes, several vintages stand out in particular. The years 1982, 1986, 1989 and 1990 are considered absolute references: the 1982 offers exceptional fruity richness, while the 1989 and 1990 perfectly illustrate the solar power of these two legendary harvests. More recently within our historical window, the 1995, 2000 and 2005 confirm the château's consistency. The 2000 vintage, in particular, is unanimously praised for its balance between concentration and elegance, typical of Haut-Marbuzet's style at its finest.

The blend of Château Haut-Marbuzet is based primarily on three classic Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The proportion of Merlot has historically been higher than in many properties in the Médoc, which largely explains the characteristic roundness and softness of the wine. This blending choice, combined with a terroir of well-drained clay-limestone gravels on the slopes of Saint-Estèphe, allows the château to produce a wine that is both structured and indulgent, true to its reputation as a pleasure-driven Saint-Estèphe.

The ideal tasting window for Château Haut-Marbuzet depends on the vintage, but the estate has the distinctive characteristic of being approachable quite early thanks to its opulent style. For recent and average vintages, opening the bottle between 7 and 12 years after the harvest generally allows you to find a fine balance between the freshness of the fruit and the complexity acquired with age. For great vintages such as 2000 or 2005, a patience of 15 to 20 years will be rewarded with an aromatic palette of great complexity. It is advisable to decant the wine at least one hour before serving and to serve it between 16 and 17 °C.

History of Château Haut-Marbuzet

The history of Château Haut-Marbuzet dates back to 1825, when the Mac Carthy family, descendants of Irish Jacobite emigrants, acquired several plots of vines in the Saint-Estèphe region located on the left bank. However, it was in 1952 that the true renaissance of the estate began, with the acquisition of the original 7 hectares by Hervé Duboscq, a self-taught wine merchant. Without any agricultural training, he took on the challenge of breathing new life into this once fragmented terroir. Little by little, with the help of his son Henri, he reconstituted the former Mac Carthy estate, acquiring other neighbouring plots.

Henri Duboscq, with his flamboyant and visionary character, joined his father in the 1960s. Together, they made Château Haut-Marbuzet an estate renowned for the quality of its wines, rivalling the finest classified growths of Bordeaux. Château Haut-Marbuzet was classified as an Exceptional Cru Bourgeois in 2003, thereby consolidating its reputation. Today, Henri's sons, Bruno and Hugues Duboscq, continue to perpetuate the family legacy, bringing a touch of modernity, notably with the construction of a new cellar in 2017.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Haut-Marbuzet

The terroir of Château Haut-Marbuzet is one of the most sought-after in Saint-Estèphe. Its 76 hectares of vines stretch across Günzian gravel soils resting on a clay-limestone subsoil, ideal for viticulture. The exposure to the Gironde bestows a unique microclimate, balancing heat and humidity, perfect for the ripening of the grapes.

The vineyard is planted with a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), followed by Merlot (40%) and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc (10%). The vines, approximately 30 years old, are cultivated at a high density of 8,500 plants per hectare. This high planting density encourages the production of small-sized grapes, concentrating the aromas and structure of the wine. Cultivation is carried out in keeping with tradition, with particular attention paid to limiting chemical inputs, thus favouring a sustainable approach to the vineyard.

Winemaking at Château Haut-Marbuzet

The winemaking process at Château Haut-Marbuzet is artisanal and meticulous. The harvest is carried out manually by a team of around a hundred people, selecting only the bunches at perfect ripeness. A second selection is performed at the entrance to the cellar, thereby guaranteeing the optimal quality of the grapes used.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, made of concrete and stainless steel, allowing perfect temperature control to be maintained and maximising the extraction of aromas. Château Haut-Marbuzet is distinguished by its bold use of 100% new oak barrels for the ageing of its wines. This technique, initiated by Henri Duboscq, softens the typical tannic power of Saint-Estèphe wines, while imparting a characteristic roundness and unctuousness.

The ageing of the wines lasts between 15 and 18 months, using a blend of new wood from different French forests, carefully selected for each vintage. This expertise imparts a unique personality to the wines of Château Haut-Marbuzet, combining charm and elegance from their youth, with a remarkable ageing potential.

The cuvées of Château Haut-Marbuzet

Château Haut-Marbuzet produces two principal wines, both representative of the estate's exceptional style:

Château Haut-Marbuzet: The estate's first wine, it is crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This wine is distinguished by its roundness, its opulence and its silky tannins. It is known for its ability to seduce from its youth, while also possessing a notable ageing potential (10 to 15 years, or even more for the greatest vintages).

Château Mac Carthy: The estate's second wine, produced from the youngest vines. It is approachable earlier than Château Haut-Marbuzet, with a fresher and fruitier style, yet retaining a fine tannic structure. This wine is ideal to enjoy in its early years, offering an excellent quality-to-price ratio.

In addition to these two cuvées, the estate also produces the wine of Château Chambert-Marbuzet and that of Château Tour de Marbuzet, two neighbouring properties acquired by the Duboscq family.

Here is a selection of the most remarkable vintages from Château Haut-Marbuzet, to discover to enrich your cellar or for immediate enjoyment: 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2003, 2001, 1999, 1996, 1995

These vintages bear witness to Château Haut-Marbuzet's ability to produce wines of great quality, capable of improving with time.

In addition to Château Haut-Marbuzet, the Saint-Estèphe appellation and the Médoc region are home to many other prestigious wine estates. Here are a few suggestions for lovers of great Bordeaux wines: Château Montrose, Château Cos d'Estournel, Château Calon-Ségur, Château Lafon-Rochet, Château Meyney

Château Haut-Marbuzet is much more than a simple wine estate. It is the fruit of a fascinating history, an exceptional terroir and a unique expertise passed down from father to son. Its wines, seductive from their youth and capable of ageing magnificently, are a must for any lover of great Bordeaux wines. Do not wait any longer to discover or rediscover the cuvées of Château Haut-Marbuzet and enrich your cellar with one of the greatest names in Saint-Estèphe.
