History of Domaine Hubert Lignier

The family story begins in 1885, when Jacques Lignier, then vineyard manager at a Côte de Nuits estate, bought vineyard plots ravaged by phylloxera. In the early 20th century, his son Jules replanted them and built a substantial vineyard holding, which he passed on to his three sons, Georges, Maurice and Henri. By the early 1960s, Henri had expanded his own estate to 4.5 hectares, preserving many fruit trees among vines cultivated by hand with the help of a horse. In 1955, he also planted the twenty-seven rows of Pinot Noir in the Monts Luisants climat, within Clos de la Roche, that would later provide the source material for the estate’s massal selection.

Hubert Lignier, Henri’s eldest son, took over the estate in 1959 and patiently expanded it, plot by plot. In 1973, amid an economic crisis, he made the decisive choice to bottle the wine at the estate. In 1992, his younger son Romain joined him on a 7.5-hectare vineyard: together, they began cultivating the soils, and the estate’s reputation grew. Romain’s tragic death at age 34 marked a turning point. In 2004, his brother Laurent returned to support their parents, Hubert and Françoise. By 2007, he had eliminated all synthetic products, leading the estate to organic certification in 2019. A new winery was built in 2008 at 13 route nationale in Morey-Saint-Denis, and the vineyard reached eleven hectares in 2020. Today, Sébastien and Maëlle are gradually joining the family endeavor, carrying forward six generations of stewardship.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Hubert Lignier

The vineyards center on Morey-Saint-Denis, the historic heart of the estate, and extend into neighboring Côte de Nuits villages: Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vougeot and Fixin. A few more recently acquired plots in Pommard, Volnay, Monthelie and Saint-Romain broaden the range in the Côte de Beaune. The vines take root in the thin clay and limestone soils characteristic of Morey’s slopes, where scree, marl and rocky strata alternate, each climat imparting its own character to the Pinot Noir.

The estate’s true strength lies in the age of its vines. Most plots are planted with old vines propagated through the estate’s own massal selections, the oldest dating back to 1936. Since the 1990s, the soils have been plowed and lightly cultivated, without herbicides or insecticides. Farming practices have been organic since 2006; official conversion began in 2016, and certification was obtained in 2019. In response to climate change, Laurent Lignier is adapting his methods: shredding vine prunings, using compost from a neighboring farm, sowing legumes between the rows, replacing missing vines and grafting young plants, and trimming higher and with greater care. Yields are deliberately low, and the grapes are harvested entirely by hand, with two rigorous rounds of sorting.

Winemaking at Domaine Hubert Lignier

The estate’s cellar philosophy rests on minimal intervention and patience. Grape quality is the foundation of everything: the estate seeks wines that combine freshness, finesse and elegance while retaining depth and a flavorful finish. Once received, the grapes are fermented in tanks, with a varying proportion of whole clusters to bring balance and complexity. Fermentation starts spontaneously with native yeasts. Pump-overs and punch-downs are carried out gently, always aiming for delicate, silky tannins rather than heavy extraction.

Before the wine is transferred to barrels, the lees are selected and distributed evenly among them, with a measured proportion of new oak, generally 20 to 30%. A long aging period follows—around twenty months, sometimes longer—allowing the wines to develop slowly. They are then racked and bottled by gravity, without filtration or fining. This patient process yields balanced, precise wines with excellent aging potential that can also be approachable relatively young.

The cuvées of Domaine Hubert Lignier

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée MCMLV: the estate’s pinnacle. First produced as a separate cuvée in 2017, it pays tribute to Henri Lignier and comes exclusively from the twenty-seven rows he planted in 1955 in the Monts Luisants climat—hence the name in Roman numerals. Made in very limited quantities, it offers extraordinary concentration, a bouquet of black cherry, wild raspberry, violet and rose, followed by hints of truffle, graphite and spice.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru: Morey-Saint-Denis’s emblematic grand cru and the house’s historic cuvée. Powerful and refined, it combines structure, depth and remarkable longevity, with intense dark fruit supported by mineral undertones and firm tannins. A wine for very long aging.

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru: from Gevrey-Chambertin, this grand cru stands out for its generosity and immediate charm. Ripe red fruit, gentle spice and floral notes form a broad, velvety, harmonious whole, softer in character than Clos de la Roche.

Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru: the southern neighbor of Charmes, this grand cru offers a more earthy, deeper profile, with dark fruit, licorice and forest-floor notes. Its dense tannic structure and mineral freshness make it a demanding but rewarding wine to cellar.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru: the Côte de Nuits’ largest historic walled vineyard and a more recent addition to the range. It offers a broad, powerful palate with supple tannins, combining blackcurrant, spice and leather notes with the majesty and aging potential of this legendary grand cru.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes: the estate’s signature cuvée, blended from adjoining plots in Les Faconnières and Les Chenevery, just below Clos de la Roche, planted in 1947 and 1960. It has an almost grand cru stature: presence, power, length and finesse. A dense, mineral Pinot Noir regularly praised by international critics.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots: high on the slope, this climat yields a more contemplative, taut wine with pronounced minerality and precise fruit. Its freshness and directness make it one of the range’s most elegant premiers crus.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte: neighboring Clos de la Roche, this climat yields a refined, floral and silky Pinot Noir with fine tannins. It combines aromatic elegance with excellent persistence, in a more delicate style than the estate’s most structured cuvées.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Sorbès: in the southern part of the appellation, this premier cru offers a fleshy, appealing wine with crisp red fruit and gentle spice. Its velvety texture makes it approachable fairly young.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Chenevery: from vines on the lower slope, this climat yields a more generous, warm-toned wine with ripe dark fruit and a broad texture. An approachable, flavorful premier cru full of roundness.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Blanchards: this lesser-known climat produces a fine, fragrant Pinot Noir, marked by lively acidity and notes of small red berries. It perfectly illustrates the diversity of Morey-Saint-Denis.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes: situated on the border with Morey-Saint-Denis and surrounded by grands crus, this premier cru yields a powerful, complex wine with firm tannins and a bouquet of dark fruit, spice and forest floor. A natural candidate for long-term cellaring.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle: neighboring Chapelle-Chambertin, this climat yields a structured, deep wine combining black cherry, licorice and mineral notes. Its firm structure and freshness make it a Gevrey of real substance.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes: situated below Bonnes-Mares, this premier cru combines Chambolle’s finesse with greater depth. Aromas of rose, violet and red fruit, silky tannins, and an elegant, lingering finish.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chabiots: this upper-slope climat yields a wine of great aromatic delicacy, with a finely woven texture, mineral tension and freshness that carries through the finish. The most ethereal expression in the range.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Didiers, Hospices de Nuits: a cuvée from the Hospices de Nuits, aged at the estate. It offers a robust, full-bodied Pinot Noir typical of northern Nuits-Saint-Georges, with dark fruit, spicy notes and pronounced tannic structure.

Monthelie 1er Cru Sur La Velle: in the Côte de Beaune, this well-exposed premier cru yields an elegant, fruity red with fine tannins and lovely freshness. An enjoyable wine that is expressive even in its youth.

Monthelie 1er Cru: a blend of premier cru plots in this village neighboring Volnay. Supple, fragrant and easy-drinking, it charms with red-fruit aromas and a clean finish, offering excellent value for the pleasure it delivers.

Morey-Saint-Denis Trilogie: a true village wine that punches above its classification, blended from very old vines in three named vineyard sites—Les Chenevery, Clos Solon and Les Porroux—planted between 1936 and 1972. Fermented with a portion of whole clusters and aged in around 20% new oak, it combines mineral intensity, wild spice and remarkable aromatic purity.

Morey-Saint-Denis Très Girard: from a named vineyard site in the lower part of the village, this wine is round, fruity and immediately enjoyable. With fresh red fruit and a supple texture, it offers an ideal introduction to the estate’s style.

Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes: from the estate’s oldest plantings in the village, this wine gains density and complexity while retaining Chambolle’s delicacy. A village wine of great distinction.

Pommard Les Chanlins: a Côte de Beaune plot high on the slope, on the border with Volnay. It yields a Pommard more lithe than most, with dark fruit and firm tannins, structured for aging.

Pommard En Brescul: this named vineyard site produces a powerful, full-bodied wine typical of the appellation, with notes of blackcurrant, plum and spice. Its firm structure needs a few years in the cellar to soften.

Monthelie: the village cuvée from this charming Côte de Beaune terroir, supple and fruity, with notes of cherry and raspberry. An appealing Pinot Noir that is easy to share, made with the house’s characteristic precision.
