History of Domaine Arlaud

The history of Domaine Arlaud begins in 1942, during the Second World War, when Joseph Arlaud, originally from the Ardèche, met Renée Amiot, a Burgundian woman from a historic winemaking family. Upon their marriage, they received several plots located in the Côtes de Nuits, including in the renowned villages of Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin. This gift marked the birth of Domaine Arlaud, which officially became a family wine estate in 1949.

Their son Hervé took over the management of the estate in 1983 and gradually expanded it, notably by acquiring additional plots in the prestigious appellations of Morey-Saint-Denis. Since 2013, it has been Cyprien Arlaud, the founders' grandson, who has run the estate. Passionate and visionary, Cyprien continues the quality-driven approach initiated by his parents, while intensifying ecological practices such as organic farming and biodynamics. He has also evolved the winemaking techniques to produce authentic wines that are faithful to the expression of their terroir.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Arlaud

Domaine Arlaud extends over nearly 16 hectares, planted predominantly with red grape varieties, spread across the communes of Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuits. The soils of these plots are mainly limestone and clay-limestone, offering ideal conditions for the production of great Burgundy wines. 

One of the estate's major strengths lies in its complete conversion to organic farming in 2004, followed by a biodynamic certification in 2014. This choice translates into a rigorous respect for the soils and the ecosystem, allowing the vines to flourish naturally. Ploughing is carried out by horse on the grand cru and premier cru plots, thereby preserving soil structure and limiting compaction associated with mechanization.

This attention to detail has made it possible to fully reveal the potential of the unique terroirs of Morey-Saint-Denis and its surroundings. The grapes from these soils, cultivated without pesticides or herbicides, yield wines of great purity that are a faithful reflection of their terroir.

Winemaking at Domaine Arlaud

Winemaking at Domaine Arlaud is based on practices that respect the fruit and the terroir, with minimal intervention to allow the grapes to express themselves fully. Harvesting is done by hand, with meticulous sorting to retain only the finest bunches. Depending on the vintage, a portion of the grapes may be vinified as whole clusters, particularly for the grand crus, when the ripeness of the stems allows it.

After the harvest, the grapes are carefully transported to the estate's modern winery, located in Morey-Saint-Denis. The estate favors gravity-flow winemaking, without pumping, in order to preserve the integrity of the berries. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts and lasts an average of 20 days. Extraction is gentle, with minimal punch-downs, so as to promote elegant and well-balanced wines.

Aging takes place in French oak barrels for 14 to 16 months, with a proportion of new wood that varies according to the cuvée: from 15% for village appellations to 30% for grand crus. The estate uses very little sulfur and no other oenological products, thereby guaranteeing the authenticity and purity of the wines. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration, often in accordance with lunar cycles to optimize their aromatic expression.
