History of Domaine Arlaud

The history of Domaine Arlaud began in 1942, during World War II, when Joseph Arlaud, originally from Ardèche, met Renée Amiot, a Burgundian from a historic winemaking family. At their wedding, they received several parcels located in the Côtes de Nuits, particularly in the renowned villages of Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin. This gift marked the birth of Domaine Arlaud, which officially became a family wine estate in 1949.

Their son Hervé took over management of the estate in 1983 and gradually expanded it, particularly by acquiring other parcels in the prestigious appellations of Morey-Saint-Denis. Since 2013, Cyprien Arlaud, grandson of the founders, has been running the estate. Passionate and visionary, Cyprien continues the quality approach initiated by his parents, while emphasizing ecological practices such as organic farming and biodynamics. He has also evolved vinification techniques to create authentic wines that are faithful to the expression of their terroir.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Arlaud

Domaine Arlaud extends over nearly 16 hectares, mainly planted with red grape varieties, and distributed across the communes of Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin and Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuits. The soils of these parcels are mainly limestone and clay-limestone, offering ideal conditions for producing great Burgundy wines. 

One of the estate's major assets lies in its complete conversion to organic farming in 2004, followed by biodynamic certification in 2014. This choice translates into scrupulous respect for the soils and ecosystem, allowing the vines to flourish naturally. Plowing is done with horses on the grand cru and premier cru parcels, thus preserving the soil structure and limiting compaction caused by mechanization.

This attention to detail has fully revealed the potential of the unique terroirs of Morey-Saint-Denis and its surroundings. The grapes from these soils, cultivated without pesticides or herbicides, produce wines of great purity, a faithful reflection of their terroir.

Vinifications at Domaine Arlaud

Vinification at Domaine Arlaud is based on practices that respect the fruit and terroir, with minimal intervention to allow the grapes to express themselves fully. Harvesting is done manually with meticulous sorting to retain only the best bunches. Depending on the vintage, some grapes may be vinified as whole clusters, particularly for grand crus, when stem maturity permits.

After harvest, the grapes are carefully transported to the estate's modern winery, located in Morey-Saint-Denis. The estate favors gravity-flow vinification, without pumping, to preserve the integrity of the berries. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts and lasts an average of 20 days. Extraction is gentle, with minimal punch-downs, to promote elegant and balanced wines.

Aging takes place in French oak barrels for 14 to 16 months, with a proportion of new wood varying according to the cuvées: from 15% for village appellations to 30% for grand crus. The estate uses very little sulfur and no other oenological products, thus guaranteeing the authenticity and purity of the wines. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration, often respecting lunar cycles to optimize their aromatic expression.
