Château de Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel wines: purchase at the best price!

This emblematic historic estate of Châteauneuf-du-Pape consists of 100 hectares of vines in a single block, located in the northeast of the appellation, at the place called Coudoulet. The origins of Beaucastel date back to 1549, but it was in 1909 that the Pierre TRAMIER family took over the estate and subsequently passed it on to his son-in-law Pierre PERRIN (now the grandchildren are at its helm). The terroir of rolled pebbles is typical and particularly representative of a part of the AOC, but it benefits from a very clayey subsoil that limits water stress during the scorching summers, frequent in Vaucluse.

History of Château de Beaucastel

The history of Château de Beaucastel is a captivating tale of family transmission and innovation, rooted in the deep foundations of Rhône Provence. The first traces date back to the 16th century: in 1549, Pierre de Beaucastel acquired a barn with its lands at Coudoulet, marking the beginning of a wine-growing saga. The current manor house, adorned with coats of arms carved in the stone of a salon with French-style ceiling, testifies to this era. In 1687, a descendant, also named Pierre de Beaucastel, received from King Louis XIV, via a letter signed by Colbert, the title of Captain of the City of Courthézon, in reward for his conversion to Catholicism. This historic document, still preserved at the château, symbolizes the early prestige of the lineage.

In the 20th century, modern expansion began in 1909 when Pierre Tramier purchased the estate. He bequeathed it to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, a man of science who initiated a quality revolution. His son, Jacques Perrin, took up the torch until 1978, transforming Beaucastel into an icon of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines through his pioneering vision. Under his leadership, the estate adopted organic farming in 1950, a bold move at the time, then biodynamics in 1974, laying the foundations for environmentally respectful viticulture. Today, Jacques's sons, Jean-Pierre and François Perrin, brilliantly lead this family business, assisted by the fifth generation: Marc, Pierre, Thomas, Cécile on Jean-Pierre's side, and Charles, Matthieu and César on François's side. Each, after international experiences in oenology, contributes to perpetuating the cardinal values: absolute respect for terroir, quest for balance and elegance, and skillful blending of family talents.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Château de Beaucastel

Located at the northern tip of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, between Orange and Avignon, the estate extends over a marine molasse bench dating from the Miocene, covered with Alpine diluvium rich in rolled pebbles, those famous "pudding stones" that store daytime heat to slowly release it to the roots at night, promoting optimal maturation. This porous soil, mixing clays, sands and deep limestone, ensures natural drainage and pronounced minerality in the wines, while the spectacular thermal variations, cool nights and sunny days, confer freshness and complexity. The microclimate, marked by low rainfall, generous sunshine and the cleansing influence of the mistral, protects the vines from diseases and amplifies the aromas of garrigue.

The vines, aged several decades, are planted in traditional goblet style, their gnarled roots plunging deep to draw the quintessence from the soil. On the 100 cultivated hectares, 70 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape bear the 13 authorized grape varieties: Grenache for fruity roundness, Mourvèdre for tannic structure, Syrah for spices, not to mention Counoise, Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Cinsault and the white varieties such as Roussanne, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan and Bourboulenc. To the east, on the other side of the A7 motorway, the 30 hectares of Coudoulet in Côtes du Rhône share an identical terroir, with its rolled pebbles favoring a vigorous spring start. The 7 hectares dedicated to whites, rich in Roussanne, and the parcels in rotation, 30 hectares resting at least 10 years to regenerate the soil, illustrate sustainable management. Biodynamics obliges, the estate integrates homemade compost, auxiliary fauna and astral influences, stimulating the natural resistance of the plants. This archetypal terroir, exposed to the refreshing mistral, produces grapes of rare concentration.

Vinifications at Château de Beaucastel

Vinification at Château de Beaucastel is an ancestral art refined by innovative techniques, where each step exalts the terroir and grape varieties for wines of remarkable purity. It all begins with a manual harvest, precise and respectful, followed by rigorous sorting upon arrival at the cellar: only impeccable berries are selected, guaranteeing irreproachable quality. For the reds, grape varieties are vinified separately to preserve their unique characters, Grenache and Cinsault in concrete vats for their warmth and roundness, Syrah and Mourvèdre in truncated wooden vats to counter their reductive nature. A classic maceration of 12 to 15 days follows, sometimes enhanced by a patented technique: a brief heating of whole grapes to 80°C to fix color and aromas, followed by cooling to 20°C, reducing the use of sulfur and eliminating green notes. Malolactic fermentation precedes the masterful blending, performed by the Perrin family, who draw on generational know-how to balance power and elegance.

The aging, discreet and harmonious, takes place in oak foudres for 6 to 12 months, allowing the wood to fade in favor of fruit and terroir. For whites, gentle pneumatic pressing, after settling, leads to partial fermentation in oak barrels (30%) and stainless steel vats (70%), followed by 8 months aging without systematic malolactic to preserve freshness. Recent innovations, such as whole cluster vinification or amphora for certain parcels, adapt these methods to the changing climate, aiming for increased acidity and moderate alcohol. The wines then rest an additional year in the cellar before commercialization, ensuring optimal maturity. This biodynamic approach, combining tradition and experimentation, trials of various finishing or co-fermentations, produces cuvées of exceptional longevity.

The cuvées of Château de Beaucastel

The cuvées of Château de Beaucastel form a sumptuous array, from refined everyday wines to aging masterpieces, all from an exceptional terroir and meticulous vinification.

Château de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Rouge Coudoulet, nicknamed the "baby Beaucastel", comes from 30 hectares east of the estate. On a soil of Miocene marine molasse and Alpine diluvium identical to Châteauneuf, this wine blends 40% Grenache for fruity generosity, 30% Mourvèdre for structure, 20% Syrah for spices and 10% Cinsault for freshness. Manual harvests, sorting, 12-day maceration in concrete vats, malolactic fermentation and 6 months aging in oak foudres: the result is a supple, aromatic red, with notes of red fruits and garrigue, perfect for an accessible and versatile wine purchase.

Château de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Blanc Coudoulet, from 3 hectares between Orange and Avignon, blends 30% Bourboulenc, 30% Marsanne, 30% Viognier and 10% Clairette on the same rolled pebble terroir. Pneumatic pressing, partial fermentation in oak and stainless steel for 8 months, without cold treatment: this lively white offers florality, citrus and minerality, ideal for aperitifs or seafood.

Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge, the estate's flagship over 70 hectares, utilizes all 13 grape varieties: 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault and 10% others (Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, etc.). The promising 2023 vintage, with freshness and ideal maturation despite August heat, vinified in adapted vats, blended post-malolactic and aged one year in large oak casks. Powerful, elegant, with silky tannins and aromas of kirsch, spices and truffle, it ages 10-30 years.

Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, limited to 7 hectares, dominates with 80% Roussanne, 15% Grenache Blanc and 5% Picardan, Clairette, Bourboulenc. For 2024, early harvests under climate vigilance, fermentation 30% oak/70% vat, aging 8 months: balanced, fruity, fresh, with notes of almond and ripe fruits, for fine gastronomy.

Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, rare (6000 bottles), is 100% overripe Roussanne from century-old vines. Fresh 2023 vintage, same aging process: opulent when young or sublime at 10 years, with truffle and honey, for exceptional gastronomic pairings.

Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin, an exceptional cuvée produced only in great years since its launch in 1989, honors the vision of Jacques Perrin, biodynamics pioneer at the estate. From the lieu-dit Courrieux, a historic parcel replanted with Mourvèdre post-phylloxera in 1910 on a unique terroir of rolled pebbles, calcareous clays and silty loams, it typically blends 60% Mourvèdre for tannic depth and flesh, 20% Grenache for fruity roundness, 10-20% Syrah for spicy notes and sometimes Counoise for freshness. Ultra-selective manual harvests, separate vinification of grape varieties with co-fermentation for the rare varieties, extended maceration and extended aging of 18 months in 4000-liter foudres: this massive and concentrated wine displays aromas of truffle, blackcurrant, blueberry, licorice and rocky minerality, with a silky structure and aging potential of several decades.
