History of Domaine Charvin

The Charvin family has grown grapes in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1851. For nearly a century and a half, like many growers in the area, they sold most of their production to wine merchants without ever putting their name on a label. The turning point came in 1990: Laurent Charvin, then twenty-one, began making wine alongside his father and decided to bottle the estate’s production.

His approach ran counter to the prevailing trend from the outset. While the 1990s favored showy, highly concentrated wines with abundant oak, he focused on making wines as balanced as possible. To that end, he retained whole-cluster fermentation, a practice almost no one in the appellation followed at the time, and abandoned oak entirely to preserve the distinctive character of his terroir. He also began moving his vineyards toward organic farming very early on. Long an outlier, this approach eventually inspired others: many Châteauneuf winegrowers have since returned to whole-cluster fermentation and aging in concrete. Recognition followed. Praised by leading French sommeliers and by Guy Julien, the renowned proprietor of La Beaugravière in Mondragon, the estate received three stars from La Revue du vin de France’s guide, alongside Clos des Papes, Clos du Mont-Olivet, Château Rayas and Le Vieux Donjon.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Charvin

The estate covers approximately thirty-three hectares in what local winegrowers call the cool districts of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the northwest of the appellation, on the northern slope of the Mont-Redon plateau. This makes it one of the appellation’s coolest, latest-ripening areas, largely explaining the wines’ balance and easy-drinking character despite Grenache’s natural power. The soils combine rounded stones over clay on the upper slopes with pure sand lower down.

The vineyards comprise eleven hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with vines averaging forty-five years of age; around twenty hectares in Côtes du Rhône, including some very old parcels directly adjacent to the appellation; and two hectares in IGP Vaucluse. Grenache dominates throughout, accounting for about 80% of the plantings, alongside Vaccarèse, Mourvèdre and Syrah, as well as Carignan and Bourboulenc in the Côtes du Rhône vineyards. More recently, the estate has added the 2.2-hectare Damon parcel in Maucoil, high on the hillside toward Mont-Redon and extending to the edge of the woods. Planted eighty years ago by Laurent’s grandfather Élie, sold decades ago and recently bought back from cousins, it faces north and has been farmed organically since 2021.

Winemaking at Domaine Charvin

The method is thoroughly traditional and has not changed since Laurent Charvin’s early days. No grapes are destemmed: whole clusters, stems included, go into the tank. Provided the stems are perfectly ripe, they bring freshness, tension and a fine rather than harsh tannic structure. Fermentation and maceration last around three weeks in large concrete tanks, with very gentle extraction.

Aging then continues for eighteen months, still in concrete tanks for the two principal red wines. There are no barrels, no new oak and no artifice whatsoever: concrete preserves the purity of the fruit and lets the terroir speak without interference. The wines are neither fined nor filtered before bottling. Production remains modest, at around 2,500 cases of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 4,000 cases of Côtes du Rhône and a thousand cases of the other cuvées. The resulting style combines genuine power with remarkable finesse and depth, producing wines that reward patience: the Côtes du Rhône benefits from a few years in the cellar, while the Châteauneuf-du-Pape reveals its potential only after at least five years.

The Cuvées of Domaine Charvin

Red Châteauneuf-du-Pape: the estate’s fine wine, made from approximately 80% Grenache grown on vines averaging forty-five years of age, complemented by Vaccarèse, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Fermented with whole clusters and aged for eighteen months in concrete tanks, without fining or filtration, it combines the appellation’s sun-drenched generosity with almost Burgundian finesse. The nose offers wild strawberry, cherry, garrigue, pepper, rose petal and sweet spices; the palate is deep, savory and remarkably long, supported by silky tannins. A Châteauneuf with outstanding aging potential, often compared to the style of Château Rayas; open after five to ten years or cellar for two decades or more.

White Châteauneuf-du-Pape: a small-production wine from the estate, made from the appellation’s traditional white grape varieties. Also aged without oak, it favors energy, precise ripeness and freshness over opulence, with notes of white flowers, white-fleshed fruit and fennel, and a saline finish. A food-friendly white that ages beautifully.

Côtes du Rhône Le Poutet: the cuvée that brought the estate to the attention of wine lovers worldwide, regarded by many as one of the Rhône Valley’s best values. It comes from vines around forty years old, planted in sandy, predominantly clay soils scattered with rounded stones, directly adjoining the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Grenache leads, complemented by Mourvèdre, Carignan and Syrah; the grapes are fermented as whole clusters, then aged in concrete. The bouquet suggests wild strawberry, peppery herbs, flowers and rose petal; the palate is balanced, elegant and unusually complex for the appellation.

Côtes du Rhône Damon: the estate’s most recent creation, born from the repurchase of a 2.2-hectare parcel in Maucoil that Élie Charvin planted eighty years ago and that had long been outside the family’s ownership—hence the words on the label, “Élie en rêvait” (“Élie dreamed of it”). North-facing, on clay studded with large rounded stones, it is planted with approximately 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah and a touch of Carignan. Also fermented with whole clusters and aged in concrete, but bottled six months earlier than Le Poutet, it has a deeper color and livelier acidity. The nose combines black raspberry, pepper, smoked meat and garrigue; the palate is structured and dense. Some tasters consider it comparable to a top-flight Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Côtes du Rhône Rosé: a Grenache and Cinsault rosé from vines around forty years old, aged in tank. Fresh, fruity and completely dry, it favors finesse and drinkability over showiness, in keeping with the restraint that characterizes the estate. Ideal as an aperitif or with Mediterranean cuisine.

The IGP Vaucluse cuvées: the two hectares classified as vin de pays allow the estate to produce a few thousand additional bottles, made with the same care as its leading cuvées, without oak and in concrete tanks. Supple, fruity and immediately appealing, they offer an affordable introduction to Laurent Charvin’s wines and pair well with grilled dishes, charcuterie or everyday meals.
