Domaine Charvin, situated on the famous Rhodanian rolled-pebble soils
Domaine Charvin, located in Orange in the Rhône (immediately bordering Châteauneuf-du-Pape), has existed since 1851, but the entire wine production was then sold to négociants as the Charvin family was also devoted to agriculture at the time. It is now Laurent Charvin who has succeeded his father Gérard Charvin at the head of a 32-hectare estate of vineyards, predominantly red, located in the northern part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation (only 0.6 ha of white wine is produced here).

Laurent Charvin decided to bottle his wines himself from 1990 onwards, and immediately attracted the attention of critics (including Robert Parker), achieving high tasting scores. Nowadays, the Charvin estate is organically farmed and produces wines with a very classic profile, unoaked as they are aged in concrete vats. The Charvin estate vinifies largely with whole clusters, which gives the wines a fresh character, and can also deliver a rustic and tannic side in their early youth. It is therefore advisable to wait 8 to 10 years for the material to blend before tasting them. The old Grenache parcels of the Charvin estate give their best expression during warm years (which are not lacking in Châteauneuf du Pape), as they are located in the north of the appellation on slightly cooler terroirs, which allow them to gain freshness and finesse, while maintaining remarkably restrained power. The Syrah, Mourvèdre, and rare Vaccarèse grape varieties complete the blend of the unique Châteauneuf du Pape Charvin cuvée, which is among the wines of the appellation that must absolutely be reserved.
One only needs to taste the 2005, 2007 or 2010 vintages to appreciate the real aging potential of the Châteauneuf du Pape wines from the Charvin estate, which will develop over 15 to 20 years. The Charvin estate also produces 2 wines under the Côtes du Rhône appellation: 1 white Côtes du Rhône (of very limited production and which has gained finesse in recent years, delivering pleasant floral notes), and a red Côtes du Rhône, a magnificent fruity bomb, which can be enjoyed over 5 to 8 years. The Charvin estate also produces a rosé Côtes du Rhône, intended for the table, very powerful and spicy, whose deep color and blood orange accents give the measure of the difference that such a wine can produce, compared to the usual Provence rosés, of more discreet color. It will accompany grilled meats wonderfully. The quality of the Charvin estate's wines is at the top of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, and do not hesitate when faced with old vintages as the quality-price ratio is simply excellent.
