Guigal

Wines from Domaine Guigal: buy at the best price

Located in Ampuis, at the heart of Côte-Rôtie, Maison E. Guigal is undoubtedly the most celebrated name in the Rhône Valley. Founded in 1946 and now led by the third generation, it combines two areas of expertise: that of an estate owner and grower on the finest hillsides of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, and that of a négociant house capable of offering benchmark wines across all the great Rhône appellations, from north to south. Long ageing in barrels from its own cooperage, exacting selection standards and legendary consistency have made its cuvées — from Côtes du Rhône to the iconic La Mouline, La Turque and La Landonne — essential references for wine lovers.

History of Domaine Guigal

The story begins in 1924, when fourteen-year-old Étienne Guigal arrived in Ampuis and discovered the hillsides of Côte-Rôtie. After around fifteen years at Vidal-Fleury, he founded his own wine house in 1946, in a vineyard area then devastated, depopulated and at risk of disappearing. His son Marcel took the reins at a very young age in 1961, when his father suddenly lost his sight. Passionate and tireless, Marcel Guigal established a new vision: rigorous selection by vineyard plot, very long aging in new barrels and, above all, bringing named vineyard sites previously unknown to the wider public into the spotlight.

The 1970s and 1980s brought the house international acclaim with the first bottles of La Mouline, followed by La Landonne and La Turque—the legendary trio enthusiasts call the LaLa wines, which regularly earn top scores from critics worldwide. In 1984, Guigal purchased the venerable Vidal-Fleury house, founded in 1781. In 1995, the family acquired Château d’Ampuis, a listed Renaissance residence that became the house’s headquarters. The Jean-Louis Grippat and de Vallouit estates followed in 2001, bringing superb plots in Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, then Domaine de Bonserine in 2006 and Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2017. Philippe Guigal, an enologist and third-generation family member, now oversees winemaking alongside his father, continuing a style that is instantly recognizable.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Guigal

The historic heart of the vineyard lies on Côte-Rôtie’s precipitous hillsides, terraced with dry-stone walls known as cheys and worked by hand, sometimes with a winch. Two distinct areas contrast and complement each other: the Côte Blonde, with light-colored gneiss soils mixed with silica and limestone, producing wines of floral finesse; and the Côte Brune, with mica schist rich in iron oxides, producing powerful, tannic wines. Between them flows the Reynard stream, which gave its name to the house’s newest great cuvée.

The property also has prime plots in Condrieu, on decomposed granite soils where viognier expresses itself exuberantly; on the Hermitage hill (Les Bessards, Les Greffieux, L’Hermite, Les Murets); and in Saint-Joseph, notably on the steep Vignes de l’Hospice slope overlooking Tournon-sur-Rhône. This vineyard heritage is complemented by carefully selected grapes from longtime partner growers in both the Northern and Southern Rhône (Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel, Côtes du Rhône), which go into the cuvées of La Collection. Syrah and viognier in the north, and grenache, mourvèdre, cinsault, clairette and roussanne in the south, make up this mosaic of terroirs.

Winemaking at Domaine Guigal

All wines from the northern appellations are vinified in Ampuis. The reds ferment at controlled temperatures, with automated punch-downs and very long macerations, often lasting three to four weeks, to gently extract substance and tannins. The whites are gently pressed, fermented in barrels or tanks depending on the cuvée, then aged on fine lees with stirring to gain richness and complexity.

The house’s signature lies above all in its aging regimes, among the longest in France: twenty to forty-two months in barrels for its finest wines, often entirely in new oak for the Trésors. To control this aspect completely, Guigal has operated its own cooperage since the early 2000s, where oak staves are air-dried for several years before being toasted to house specifications. This rare arrangement, together with an aging cellar carved into the rock, helps explain the wines’ depth, integration and immense aging potential, as well as the consistent quality praised by international critics vintage after vintage.

The cuvées of Domaine Guigal

Côte-Rôtie La Mouline: a jewel of the Côte Blonde, from vines more than sixty years old, it blends syrah with a generous proportion of viognier. Aged for around forty-two months in new barrels, it captivates with its velvety texture and aromas of violet, candied red fruit and sweet spice. The most feminine and sensual of the legendary trio.

Côte-Rôtie La Landonne: from the iron-rich schist of the Côte Brune, this pure syrah produces a wine of striking power, with leather, truffle, black olive and dark fruit. Its very long aging in new barrels tames its substantial tannins. Built for exceptionally long aging—three or four decades.

Côte-Rôtie La Turque: also located on the Côte Brune, it includes a small proportion of viognier that softens the terroir’s mineral and smoky character. Between the finesse of La Mouline and the power of La Landonne, it achieves a rare balance, with dark fruit, licorice and toasted spices.

Côte-Rôtie La Reynarde: the fourth of the LaLa wines, this cuvée takes its name from the Reynard stream, which once separated the Côte Blonde from the Côte Brune. Grown on mica schist rich in iron oxides and vinified with whole clusters, it is aged for forty months in new barrels. An intense nose of licorice and ripe fruit leads to a concentrated, structured palate, with aging potential of around thirty years.

Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis: a blend from the property’s finest named sites across both slopes, with a touch of viognier. After more than three years of oak aging, it offers a spicy dark-fruit nose and a powerful, licorice-tinged palate with firm yet integrated tannins. A great Côte-Rôtie built to age, ideally opened after around ten years.

Côte-Rôtie Brune & Blonde de Guigal: the house’s emblematic blended cuvée brings together the appellation’s two slopes. Aged for three years in barrels, it combines dark fruit, smoky and floral notes, and silky tannins. It is the most reliable introduction to the world of Côte-Rôtie.

Condrieu La Doriane: an outstanding expression of viognier from Condrieu’s finest granite hillsides, fermented and aged in new barrels. Apricot, white peach, acacia blossom and honey unfold across an opulent yet vibrant palate. One of the Northern Rhône’s great white wines.

Condrieu Luminescence: the house’s limited-production Condrieu cuvée, from an exceptional selection of plots and aged with particular care. Denser, deeper and more saline than La Doriane, it showcases viognier’s aromatic brilliance while retaining remarkable precision.

Condrieu: this appellation cuvée, a blend of several terroirs, offers an immediately appealing, generous expression of viognier. Aromas of apricot, violet and exotic fruit lead to a rounded, fragrant palate. Enjoy it in its early years with fish in sauce or poultry in a cream sauce.

Ermitage Ex-Voto Rouge: made only in outstanding vintages, this pure syrah comes from historic named sites on the Hermitage hill, including Les Bessards and Les Greffieux. Very long aging in new barrels, dense fruit, refined tannins and aromas of dark fruit, graphite and smoke. A monumental wine capable of aging for several decades.

Ermitage Ex-Voto Blanc: a blend of marsanne and roussanne from the same elite terroirs, fermented and aged in new barrels. It combines power, a creamy texture and mineral freshness, with notes of honey, hazelnut and white fruit and a persistent saline finish. One of the Rhône’s rarest white wines.

Hermitage Rouge: from selected plots on the legendary hill, this powerful, full-bodied syrah reveals blackcurrant, spice, leather and roasted notes after extended barrel aging. A Northern Rhône classic worth cellaring for at least five to ten years.

Hermitage Blanc: predominantly marsanne, it captivates with its richness, aromas of acacia, toasted almond and candied fruit, and its remarkable ability to close down before reemerging after ten years in the cellar.

Saint-Joseph Vignes de l’Hospice: an exceptional single-vineyard wine from the steep granite hillside overlooking Tournon-sur-Rhône, once owned by the town’s hospice. Low-yielding syrah and extended aging in new barrels produce a wine of striking mineral precision, with fine tannins and a peppery finish.

Saint-Joseph Lieu-dit Rouge: from the historic Saint-Joseph lieu-dit, the birthplace of the appellation in Tournon, this cuvée comes from vines acquired from Jean-Louis Grippat. Concentrated and refined, it combines dark fruit, violet and spice with a pronounced granite character.

Saint-Joseph Lieu-dit Blanc: a pure expression of marsanne from the same exceptional terroir, aged in barrels on fine lees. Full and creamy, it combines white fruit, flowers, almond and honey, with an appealing, refined bitterness on the finish.

Saint-Joseph Rouge: an appellation cuvée from granite hillsides, aged in barrels for around two years. Crisp red and dark fruit, peppery notes and supple tannins make this a generous, consistent Saint-Joseph, ready to drink within five years.

Saint-Joseph Blanc: marsanne and roussanne make up this floral, fruity white, with a rounded, fresh palate that is perfect with fish, goat cheese and Mediterranean cuisine.

Crozes-Hermitage Rouge: syrah from terraces of rounded stones and granite hillsides, aged in large oak casks and barrels. Dark fruit, pepper and smoky notes meet a supple, balanced palate. Excellent value for everyday dining.

Crozes-Hermitage Blanc: a lively, floral blend of marsanne and roussanne, with notes of hawthorn, peach and fresh almond. A white that is both approachable and well suited to food.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge: a grenache-led blend with mourvèdre and syrah, grown on the appellation’s famous rounded stones. Powerful and generous, it offers garrigue, kirsch, spice and leather over supple tannins, with aging potential of fifteen years or more.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc: made from the appellation’s white grape varieties (clairette, roussanne, grenache blanc, bourboulenc), it combines a rounded palate and aromas of white flowers and stone fruit with a fresh finish that is more vibrant than expected.

Gigondas Rouge: grenache and syrah from the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail make for a deeply colored, spicy, fleshy wine with black cherry, garrigue and pepper. A sun-soaked yet structured red, ideal with roasted meats and slow-braised stews.

Tavel: the quintessential food-friendly rosé, deeply colored and made primarily from grenache and cinsault. Full-bodied, fruity and vinous, it pairs equally well with charcuterie and spicy dishes.

Côtes du Rhône Rouge: the house’s most widely available cuvée, a blend of syrah, grenache and mourvèdre aged in tanks and large oak casks. Generous dark fruit, spicy notes and a supple palate make this a consistently enjoyable, approachable wine that has become a benchmark for the appellation.

Côtes du Rhône Blanc: a fresh, floral blend made chiefly from viognier, roussanne, marsanne, clairette and bourboulenc, with notes of citrus and white fruit. Perfect as an aperitif or with seafood starters.

Côtes du Rhône Rosé: predominantly grenache and cinsault make for a fruit-forward rosé with a bright color, aromas of strawberry and peach, and a lively, refreshing palate.

The wines of Château de Nalys: acquired in 2017, this historic Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate adds four cuvées to the group’s range: Château de Nalys red and white, sourced from the estate’s finest plots and carefully aged, and the more approachable, fruit-forward Saintes Pierres de Nalys red and white. A fine introduction to the appellation’s terroirs of rounded stones, sandy safres and limestone fragments.
