History of Bartolo Mascarello Estate

The roots of Bartolo Mascarello Estate stretch back to the 19th century, when the Mascarello family was already cultivating vines in the Langhe to sell their grapes to négociants. The estate was officially founded in 1918 by Giulio Mascarello, in Barolo, who decided to produce his own wine from the family plots. Over time, Giulio gradually acquired small exceptional parcels in the communes of Barolo and La Morra, the cornerstones of the estate's future worldwide renown. In the 1960s, his son Bartolo Mascarello joined him and worked by his side until Giulio's death in 1981.

Bartolo Mascarello left a profound mark on the history of the appellation through his uncompromising traditionalism and legendary wit. When, in the 1990s and 2000s, certain Barolo producers turned to modernist winemaking (new barrels, single-vineyard wines, intense extractions), Bartolo categorically refused to abandon the blending of his plots and ageing in large casks. His famous hand-painted label "No barrique, no Berlusconi" summed up his political and oenological philosophy. Upon his passing in 2005, his only daughter Maria Teresa took over the reins, perpetuating the family signature in identical fashion. Global demand today far exceeds supply, yet Maria Teresa refuses to increase production, thereby preserving the estate's artisanal spirit. Bartolo Mascarello is now one of the most sought-after Italian wines in the world.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Bartolo Mascarello Estate

The vineyard extends over 5 hectares spread across four historic crus of the Barolo appellation, considered the most prestigious in the Langhe: Cannubi, Rué and San Lorenzo, located in the commune of Barolo, and Rocche dell'Annunziata, located in La Morra. These plots display remarkable geological diversity, combining clay-limestone soils, sandstone and marl, which lend the Nebbiolo complementary aromatic nuances: Cannubi for finesse and elegance, Rué and San Lorenzo for depth and structure, Rocche dell'Annunziata for freshness and floral breadth.

The grape variety is dominated by Nebbiolo, the king variety of Piedmont, complemented by the other traditional indigenous varieties of the Langhe: Dolcetto, Barbera and Freisa. Vineyard management is resolutely ecological, with no use of synthetic chemical products, in an entirely traditional approach, although the estate holds no certification. The harvest is entirely manual, at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard. Maria Teresa, faithful to her father's philosophy, refuses any extension of the vineyard: the estate's quality rests on these five historic hectares, no more, no less.

Winemaking at Bartolo Mascarello Estate

In the cellar, Maria Teresa Mascarello applies methods that have remained rigorously unchanged since her father's time. The great specificity of the estate is not merely to blend the plots after vinification, but to co-ferment them together during a single long fermentation. The grapes from the four crus are harvested successively and placed in the same vat, in a logic of organic and living blending. Fermentations are conducted exclusively with indigenous yeasts, without any additions, in original cement vats. Macerations generally last from 30 to 50 days depending on the vintage, which is exceptionally long.

The wine is then pressed in a traditional basket press, then transferred into large Slavonian oak casks (botti grandi), where it ages at length, never encountering a single new barrel. The aim is not to mark the wine with wood but to provide slow, controlled oxygenation to reveal the purity of the Nebbiolo. The Barolo is bottled approximately three years after the September harvest, then kept for an additional year in bottle before being released for sale. No fining, no filtration: the result is a crystalline Barolo, with a tannic structure of great finesse, brilliant fruit purity and exceptional longevity, often exceeding thirty years.

The Cuvées of Bartolo Mascarello Estate

Barolo DOCG: the estate's legendary cuvée, crafted from the organic blend (co-fermentation) of the four historic plots: Cannubi, Rué, San Lorenzo (Barolo) and Rocche dell'Annunziata (La Morra). 100% Nebbiolo, maceration of 30 to 50 days, ageing of approximately 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by 12 months in bottle. Light ruby colour evolving towards garnet, complex nose of dried roses, cherry, tar, black tea, aromatic herbs and truffle; a palate of rare finesse, with a silky tannic structure and saline freshness. A great Barolo for laying down, capable of evolving for more than thirty years.

Dolcetto d'Alba: an emblematic variety of the Langhe, vinified in the purest Piedmontese tradition. Deep purple colour with violet reflections, nose of red and black fruits, ripe cherry, plum and almond, supple, fresh and generous palate with rounded tannins. An accessible and joyful table wine, a perfect reflection of the family's philosophy in a more immediate register.

Barbera d'Alba: another great classic of Piedmont, crafted from Barbera, a variety with naturally vibrant acidity. Vinified and aged in the same large casks as the estate's other wines, this Barbera delivers brilliant fruit (cherry, raspberry, blackberry), a fresh and juicy structure, and a spiced finish. An ideal gastronomic wine to pair with charcuterie and regional dishes from the Langhe.

Freisa: a rare and little-known variety, long forgotten, of which Bartolo Mascarello was one of the great champions. Vinified as Freisa Langhe DOC, this delicate cuvée develops a floral and fruity nose (rose, strawberry, raspberry), a taut and tannic palate, sometimes lightly sparkling in its youth, with a unique signature. An authentic and memorable expression of a variety in the process of being rediscovered.

Langhe Nebbiolo: an introductory cuvée to the world of Nebbiolo in the Mascarello philosophy. Sourced from young vines or selected berries outside the Barolo appellation, it offers a more accessible and early-drinking expression of the great Piedmontese variety: light ruby colour, floral and fruity nose, slender palate, silky tannins. A Nebbiolo of great purity, a rare testament to the Mascarello style at a more affordable price.
