Beaux Freres wines, in Oregon in the United States : the pinnacle of quality on an exceptional terroir
The Beaux Frères estate is located on the west coast of the United States, in the Willamette Valley in the state of Oregon. The Beaux Freres estate was founded in 1986 by Michael Etzel and Robert Parker, his famous brother-in-law, who both became partners on this occasion. Now acquired by the Henriot group (Champagne),...
...the shares held by Robert Parker were bought back in 2017 by Maisons et domaines Henriot, but Michael Etzel remains at the estate as President, and his son Mike Junior has now joined him as co-winemaker. From Burgundy to Oregon, one could say that a new page in the history of Pinot Noir is being written for this estate in the state of Oregon, in the Willamette Valley, on the famous hillsides of the superb Ribbon Ridge terroir, whose quality of Pinot Noir production is specifically renowned; and one must admit that the terroir here is quite exceptional. Furthermore, it is well known that Robert Parker seeks and appreciates excellence in wines, and he could only be satisfied with producing the best wine possible. From the establishment of the Beaux Freres estate, a philosophy has prevailed: to intervene as little as possible and to prioritize farming in harmony with the soils in order to produce authentic wines. The vines are cultivated using biodynamic methods. The Beaux Frères estate vineyard covers approximately 10 hectares, with Pinot Noir planting having begun in 1988 ; with the vines now exceeding 30 years of age, the quality of production continues to improve. A second plot to the north of the vineyard, named Upper Terrace, is more recent, as it was planted (also in Pinot Noir) for the first time in 2000. Domaine Beaux Frères produces one of the greatest wines in the world according to Wine Spectator, which regularly rates it between 90 and 97 points and named its Pinot Noir cuvée - Ribbon Ridge - The Beaux Frères Vineyard 2014 – 3rd best wine in its Top 100 worldwide 2016/2017, with a score of 95. In Oregon, the 2014 vintage is recognized as the finest… and the Beaux Frères estate has drawn exceptional cuvées from it. The Beaux-Frères Vineyard 2009 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley presents a nose that is ultimately rather Burgundian and seductive, with lovely complexity and depth, featuring notes of small red fruits and gentle spices, all enhanced by a floral and vegetal quality of dried tea leaves. The palate offers a velvety texture and great finesse, with fine balance and a pleasing length. This wine bears none of the rather crowd-pleasing standards one often finds in certain American wineries. In summary, a beautiful and seductive Pinot. A must-discover for lovers of Burgundian-style wines.
