The 1984 vintage in Burgundy is a difficult and minor year, marked by a cool season and lack of sunshine that hindered ripening. The reds (Pinot Noir) suffered as a result: light, thin and often marked by vegetal notes, they lack flesh and are best enjoyed without delay, with rare successes in the Côte de Nuits. The whites (Chardonnay) fared slightly better, in a fresh and taut style, from Meursault to Chablis, but remain modest as well. The aging potential is very low, and the vast majority of cuvées are today ready to drink, indeed many are well past their peak. Situated between the powerful 1983 and the great 1985, the 1984 remains a minor vintage, best left to enthusiasts of curiosities.
