Wine 1989 Bourgogne

The 1989 vintage remains in Burgundy a great, generous and sun-drenched year, born of a hot, dry summer that yielded ripe, concentrated grapes. The reds (Pinot Noir) are its defining figures: rich, fleshy and charming, with brilliant fruit and melted tannins, more immediately approachable than the 1988s, with superb successes in the Côte de Nuits (Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny) as well as the Côte de Beaune. The whites (Chardonnay) show themselves ample and generous, from Meursault to Puligny-Montrachet, though some have lost freshness over time. The aging potential is real, albeit more measured than that of the most structured years. Today, the great reds have reached a superb maturity. At the heart of the mythical trio formed with 1988 and 1990, the 1989 offers its most charming and opulent expression.
