History of Domaine d'Arbousset

The story of Domaine d'Arbousset begins in 2001 in Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres, in the Gard, on land belonging to the Lafont family. In 2003, Gérald Lafont, a trained enologist, succeeds his father Yvon, taking over the four hectares of inherited vines with a firm determination to preserve the spirit of the place and pursue a sustainable, quality-focused approach at the estate. Early on, he makes the bold choice to farm organically, a founding principle he has upheld ever since.

A decisive turning point comes in 2014, when Gérald joins forces with Julie Rouffignac, also an enologist, originally from Provence and a former consultant for Côtes de Provence rosés. Together, they bring fresh creative energy to the estate, produce more exceptional cuvées and expand their presence across some of the Rhône Valley’s finest terroirs. Today, Domaine d'Arbousset covers around ten hectares in the Lirac, Tavel and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations and has recently acquired a few acres in the Bellet appellation, in the hills above Nice. The couple passionately share their expertise and already dream of one day passing it on to their two sons, Rafael and Maxime, guided by their three founding values: passing on knowledge, sustainability and creativity.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine d'Arbousset

The terroir of Domaine d'Arbousset offers a remarkable geological mosaic that reflects the richness of the Southern Rhône Valley. The estate’s historic home is in Lirac, on the renowned Claretière plateau, a vast expanse covered with rounded stones over a subsoil of sand and red clay—an ideal terroir for Mediterranean grape varieties. Another plot of 50-year-old Grenache grows on clay-limestone soils, while a second, 40-year-old plot combines Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Vines in the Tavel, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Bellet appellations complete an exceptional vineyard holding rooted among garrigue, mistral winds and arid land.

The entire vineyard is certified organic and farmed using an extensive biodynamic approach. Weeds are cleared with a hoe, and the living soils are grass-covered and worked without synthetic chemicals. Harvesting is entirely by hand, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard. The family decides when to pick after regularly tasting the berries to identify optimal ripeness. Yields are deliberately low, helping ensure aromatic concentration and the estate’s signature elegance.

Winemaking at Domaine d'Arbousset

Winemaking at Domaine d'Arbousset follows a philosophy of minimal intervention, where grape quality takes precedence over manipulation. No additives are used during production, apart from a tiny dose of sulfur at bottling, preserving purity and authenticity. The clusters are fully destemmed and then fermented with native yeasts in unlined, egg-shaped concrete tanks that encourage the natural movement of the juice and preserve aromatic freshness.

For the Lirac reds, maceration lasts around three weeks, with very gentle tannin extraction, followed by 18 months of aging in concrete tanks (70%) and oak demi-muids (30%) to give the wine structure without obscuring the terroir. The Tavel rosé undergoes a swift vinification: a short 24-hour maceration, gentle pressing and six months of aging in a concrete tank. This artisanal precision, together with the couple’s patience and close observation, produces pure, focused and harmonious wines built to age yet already delicious in their youth.

The cuvées of Domaine d'Arbousset

La Vigne d’Yvon is the historic, emblematic cuvée of Domaine d'Arbousset, a heartfelt tribute to its founding father, Yvon Lafont. Made under the Lirac AOP, it blends around 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault from the family’s finest plots. Its deep ruby color heralds an intense, elegant nose of fresh red and black fruit, spices and delicate floral notes. Juicy and generous on the palate, it reveals silky tannins and a long, spicy finish. An outstanding Lirac made for the table, to enjoy with rib steak, duck breast or the region’s black truffles.

Maximus is the estate’s exceptional single-plot cuvée, made from a selection of the finest clusters from a 50-year-old Mourvèdre plot on the Claretière plateau in Lirac. On soils of rounded stones, red clay and sand, this 100% Mourvèdre develops roundness, natural sweetness and controlled power. The wine captivates with its exceptional finesse, powdery, silky tannins and smoky aromas of impressive length. Considered one of the standout wines of the Southern Rhône in recent years, this cuvée can be enjoyed now after decanting and has excellent aging potential.

Tavel Rosé is the estate’s signature cuvée under the Tavel AOP, the renowned Côtes du Rhône appellation devoted exclusively to food-friendly rosés. Made from hand-harvested Grenache and other complementary southern varieties, it undergoes a short 24-hour maceration before being vinified without additives in an egg-shaped concrete tank and aged for six months on fine lees. Garnet with ruby highlights, it has an expressive nose of wild strawberry and rhubarb, while the palate combines breadth, purity and minerality with a remarkably long finish. A superb rosé for the table, perfect with Mediterranean cuisine, grilled dishes or fish in sauce.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the estate’s most prestigious cuvée, born of the vineyard’s recent expansion into the premier appellation of the Southern Rhône Valley. Made from Grenache and the appellation’s emblematic grape varieties, farmed biodynamically and vinified without additives like the rest of the range, this cuvée reveals a distinguished, deep and elegant Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Notes of intense black fruit, blackcurrant, black cherry, garrigue and spice unfold against a smoky backdrop, with silky tannins and memorable length. A deeply moving fine wine to enjoy with rich dishes such as slow-cooked lamb, cassoulet or game in sauce.

Bellet is the rarest and most recent cuvée from Domaine d'Arbousset, sourced from a 0.8-hectare plot acquired in the hills above Nice, within the Bellet appellation. A rare, historic Mediterranean winegrowing area, this high-altitude terroir has a distinctive character shaped by its local grape varieties and maritime-influenced climate. Made with the same organic and biodynamic philosophy as the estate’s other wines, this exceptional cuvée extends the Arbousset venture beyond the Rhône Valley and reflects Gérald and Julie’s pioneering spirit.
