History of Domaine d'Arbousset

The history of Domaine d'Arbousset begins in 2001, in Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres in the Gard, on the Lafont family's ancestral land. In 2003, Gérald Lafont, a trained oenologist, succeeded his father Yvon by taking over the four inherited hectares of vines, with the firm determination to extend the soul of the place and to commit the estate to a sustainable and quality-driven approach. Very early on, he made the bold choice of organic farming, a founding principle that has never been abandoned since.

A decisive turning point came in 2014, when Gérald joined forces with Julie Rouffignac, also an oenologist, originally from Provence and a former consultant for Côtes de Provence rosés. Together, they breathed new creative energy into the estate, multiplied the prestige cuvées and extended their footprint across the finest terroirs of the Rhône Valley. Today, Domaine d'Arbousset spans around ten hectares across the Lirac, Tavel and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations, and has even recently acquired a few acres in the Bellet appellation, on the heights of Nice. The couple passionately shares this expertise and already dreams of passing it on one day to their two sons, Rafael and Maxime, in keeping with the three founding values: transmission, sustainability and creativity.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine d'Arbousset

The terroir of Domaine d'Arbousset offers a remarkable geological mosaic, characteristic of the richness of the southern Rhône Valley. The estate's historic heartland lies in Lirac, on the celebrated Claretière plateau, a vast expanse covered in rolled galets set over a subsoil of sands and red clays — an ideal terroir for Mediterranean grape varieties. Another 50-year-old Grenache plot rests on clay-limestone soils, while a second 40-year-old plot blends Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. The vines in the Tavel, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Bellet appellations complete an exceptional viticultural heritage, rooted between garrigue, mistral and arid soils.

The entire vineyard is managed under certified organic farming, with a highly developed biodynamic approach. Weeding is done by hand with a hoe, the soils are living, grassed over and worked without synthetic chemical products. Harvesting is entirely manual, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard, and the decision to harvest is made as a family, after regular tasting of the berries to capture the optimal moment of ripeness. Yields are intentionally low, ensuring aromatic concentration and a signature elegance.

Vinifications of Domaine d'Arbousset

Winemaking at Domaine d'Arbousset follows a philosophy of minimal intervention, where the quality of the grape takes precedence over any manipulation. No additives are added during production, with the exception of a micro-dose of sulphur at bottling, guaranteeing purity and authenticity. The clusters are entirely destemmed and then vinified with indigenous yeasts, in raw concrete egg-shaped tanks that encourage a natural dynamic of the juice and preserve aromatic freshness.

For the Lirac reds, maceration extends over approximately three weeks with very gentle tannin extraction, followed by 18 months of ageing in concrete tanks (70%) and demi-muids of oak (30%) to clothe the wine without masking the terroir. The Tavel rosé undergoes a rapid vinification with a short 24-hour maceration, gentle pressing and six months of ageing in concrete tank. This artisanal precision, combined with the patience and attentive observation of the couple, gives birth to pure, upright and harmonious wines, built for ageing while already revealing themselves with generosity in their youth.

The Cuvées of Domaine d'Arbousset

La Vigne d'Yvon is the historic and emblematic cuvée of Domaine d'Arbousset, a vibrant tribute to the founding father Yvon Lafont. Produced in the Lirac AOP, it blends approximately 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault, sourced from the finest family plots. The deep ruby colour heralds an intense and elegant nose of fresh red and black fruits, spices and delicate floral notes. The palate, juicy and indulgent, reveals silky tannins and a beautiful spiced length. A great Lirac built for the table, to be savoured with a côte de bœuf, a duck magret or the region's black truffle.

Maximus is the estate's exceptional single-vineyard cuvée, the fruit of a selection of the finest clusters from a 50-year-old Mourvèdre plot planted on the Claretière plateau in Lirac. On its soils of rolled galets, red clays and sands, this 100% Mourvèdre develops roundness, natural sweetness and controlled power. The wine captivates with its exceptional finesse, powdery and silky tannins and smoky aromas of impressive length. Considered one of the most acclaimed wines of the southern Rhône in recent years, this cuvée can be enjoyed today after decanting, and has great ageing potential.

Tavel Rosé is the estate's signature cuvée in the Tavel AOP, the celebrated Côtes du Rhône appellation reserved exclusively for gastronomic rosés. Produced from Grenache and complementary southern varieties, hand-harvested, vinified without additives in an egg-shaped concrete tank after a short 24-hour maceration, it is aged six months on fine lees. The colour is garnet with ruby highlights, the expressive nose plays on wild strawberry and rhubarb, and the palate combines volume, purity and minerality with a remarkably long finish. A great table rosé, perfect with Mediterranean cuisine, grilled meats or fish in sauce.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the estate's most prestigious cuvée, the fruit of the recent expansion of the vineyard into the flagship appellation of the southern Rhône Valley. Produced from Grenache and the emblematic grape varieties of the cru, farmed biodynamically and vinified without additives like the rest of the range, this cuvée reveals a thoroughbred, deep and elegant Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Notes of intense black fruits, blackcurrant, black cherry, garrigue and spices unfold on a smoky framework with silky tannins and a memorable length. A great wine of emotion, to be savoured with rich dishes such as slow-cooked lamb, cassoulet or game in sauce.

Bellet is the most confidential and most recent cuvée of Domaine d'Arbousset, sourced from a 0.8-hectare plot acquired on the heights of Nice, in the Bellet appellation. A rare and historic small Mediterranean cru, this high-altitude terroir offers a unique typicity, with its local grape varieties and a climate bathed in marine influences. This exceptional cuvée, crafted with the same organic and biodynamic philosophy as the estate's other wines, extends the Arbousset adventure beyond the Rhône Valley and bears witness to the pioneering spirit of Gérald and Julie.
