Les Forts de Latour

Les Forts de Latour wines: buy at the best price

Les Forts de Latour is the second wine of Château Latour, Premier Grand Cru Classé of 1855, in the Pauillac appellation, on the left bank of the Bordeaux vineyard. Created in 1966, this red wine benefits from the same care and expertise as the Fine Wine, which gives it the stature of a true Médoc classified growth. Predominantly cabernet sauvignon, it captivates with its depth, its refined structure and its typically Pauillac elegance, while remaining more approachable in its youth.

History of Les Forts de Latour

The history of Château Latour dates back to the 14th century: the oldest archives, dated 1331, refer to the construction of a fortified tower guarding the Gironde estuary, which is the origin of the famous tower that adorns the label today. The great viticultural adventure of the estate began at the end of the 17th century, when Latour became the property of the de Ségur family. In 1855, the estate was elevated to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé, one of the five most prestigious in Bordeaux.

In 1966, Château Latour created its second wine, Les Forts de Latour, whose name is borrowed from a historic plot of the estate. Since 1993, the property has belonged to François Pinault, through the Artémis group, which has undertaken major renovation works and continues a constant pursuit of excellence. A pioneer, the estate has converted its entire vineyard to organic farming and works a large part of its vines using biodynamic methods. Since 2012, Château Latour has also been the only Premier Grand Cru Classé to no longer sell its wines en primeur, preferring to release them at maturity.

Terroirs and Vines of Les Forts de Latour

The Château Latour vineyard extends over nearly ninety hectares in the heart of the Médoc, a few hundred metres from the Gironde estuary. At its centre lies the Enclos, forty-seven hectares of old vines surrounding the château, reserved for the Fine Wine. Les Forts de Latour, meanwhile, is produced from plots located outside the Enclos, on very fine terroirs within the classified Pauillac zone such as Petit Batailley, Comtesse de Lalande and Sainte-Anne, as well as from the estate's younger vines.

These lands are distinguished by their deep gravel ridges, perfectly drained, resting on a clay subsoil that retains the moisture necessary for the vine. This exceptional terroir, combined with the moderating effect of the estuary, which protects against frost and encourages fine ripening, is ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate's dominant grape variety. The blend of Les Forts de Latour, however, gives greater prominence to Merlot, in a higher proportion than the Fine Wine, which contributes to its more supple character.

Vinifications of Les Forts de Latour

Les Forts de Latour is crafted with the same rigour and the same talent as the Fine Wine by the entire team at Château Latour, from the work in the vineyard through to bottling. The harvest is carried out by hand and the vinification takes place plot by plot, in fully renovated stainless steel temperature-controlled vats, ensuring great precision.

The wine is aged in French oak barrels, of which 50 to 60% are new casks. Apart from the origin of the plots, the higher proportion of Merlot and this share of new wood are the only notable differences from the Fine Wine. True to its philosophy, the estate allows this second wine to age in its cellars and only releases it after several years, once it has reached a satisfactory maturity, while retaining a superb ageing potential.

The Cuvées of Les Forts de Latour

Les Forts de Latour (Pauillac, red) is the second wine of Château Latour and the featured cuvée. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by a generous proportion of Merlot, it reveals a deep colour and a refined nose of dark fruits, cedar, spices and toasted notes. The palate, dense and structured, combines power and finesse, with firm yet well-rounded tannins and a long finish. More approachable in its youth than the Fine Wine, it nonetheless possesses great ageing potential and pairs beautifully with lamb, red meats, game and aged cheeses.

Château Latour (Pauillac, Premier Grand Cru Classé) is the Fine Wine of the estate, produced exclusively from the old vines of the Enclos and dominated by more than 90% Cabernet Sauvignon. Of exceptional concentration and depth, endowed with a monumental tannic structure, it is one of the greatest age-worthy wines in the world, capable of spanning decades.

Le Pauillac de Château Latour is the third wine of the estate, produced from the youngest vines located outside the Enclos. Richer in Merlot and aged with a small proportion of new wood, it is a fruity and approachable Pauillac that offers an elegant and accessible introduction to the house style.
