Best estates of Meursault: Comtes Lafon, Coche-Dury, Roulot and the exceptional Premiers Crus

Meursault — the name alone evokes a certain idea of Burgundian greatness: a brilliant golden robe, aromas of fresh hazelnut and butter, an ample and silky palate threaded with an unforgettable streak of minerality. The undisputed capital of white Burgundy wines, this commune in the Côte de Beaune is home to some of the world's greatest winemakers, and Premiers Crus that rival the Grands Crus of its illustrious neighbors Puligny and Chassagne.

Key takeaways:

  • Meursault is the capital of great white Burgundies, dominated by more than 95% Chardonnay, with no Grand Cru but with mythical Premiers Crus.

  • The 3 legendary estates: Coche-Dury (ultra-rare and iconic), Comtes Lafon (absolute reference), and Roulot (master of lieu-dits and mineral purity).

  • The finest terroirs are the Premiers Crus "Perrières", "Genevrières" and "Charmes", with the Perrières considered the most refined and the closest to the Grands Crus.

  • The Meursault style is unique: ample, buttery, nutty yet always underpinned by a mineral tension, especially on the great calcareous and marly terroirs.

  • Certain village lieu-dits (Tillets, Narvaux, Luchets) reach an exceptional level, notably at Roulot, sometimes comparable to Premiers Crus.

Meursault: the capital of white Burgundy wines

Located at the heart of the Côte de Beaune, between Volnay to the north and Puligny-Montrachet to the south, the Meursault appellation covers approximately 390 hectares under production (449 ha classified), of which 104 ha are Premiers Crus. It stands out for a singular characteristic in the Burgundian landscape: although it possesses no Grand Cru, unlike its prestigious neighbors, it is home to one of the greatest concentrations of talented winemakers and exceptional Premiers Crus in the entire region.

Production is dominated by more than 95% white wines, made exclusively from Chardonnay. The few red wines (Pinot Noir) are produced on plots bordering Volnay and are often sold under the Volnay Premier Cru Santenots appellation. The commune produces an average of 18,000 to 22,000 hectoliters per year, of which 4,500 to 5,600 hl are Premiers Crus depending on the vintage.

Meursault's unofficial motto might be: "no Grand Cru, but Premiers Crus that have nothing to envy from the Grands." And indeed, the Perrières from the finest estates — Comtes Lafon, Coche-Dury, Roulot — regularly command admiration and prices that surpass many Grands Crus of the Côte d'Or.

The terroir of Meursault: a "lacework of marls and limestones"

The Meursault vineyard extends between 230 and 360 meters in altitude, on a slope with an east to south-east exposure. Its terroir derives from the geological series of the Jurassic period (Bathonian to Oxfordian), composed mainly of calcareous marls and marly limestones, with a diversity of subsoils that explains the range of styles found from one climat to another.

The mid-slope marls: the heart of the appellation

The finest terroirs of Meursault are concentrated mid-slope, where calcareous marls provide sufficient water retention for the vines while ensuring natural drainage from the gradient. It is on these soils that the most renowned Premiers Crus are planted: Perrières, Genevrières, Charmes. The chalk present at depth gives the wines their characteristic mineral tension.

The diversity of exposures

The Premiers Crus in the northern part of the appellation (Genevrières, Poruzots, Bouchères) benefit from a cooler exposure that preserves natural acidity and finesse. The Charmes, further south with a more open exposure, yield more opulent and generous wines. The Perrières, on well-drained stony limestone soils, produce wines of unrivaled tension and minerality.

The commune of Meursault marks an essential geological boundary in the Côte de Beaune: with it begins the true production of great white wines. Its finest Premiers Crus, notably the Perrières, are the flagship of an appellation that needs no Grand Cru to assert its worldwide authority.

Portrait of the essential estates

Domaine Coche-Dury: The holy of holies

He is described as "one of the greatest winemakers on planet Earth" by international critics, notably Robert Parker. Jean-François Coche-Dury, now joined by his son Raphael, produces wines of an intensity and concentration rarely achieved in white Burgundy, while maintaining a freshness and precision that defies comparison. His Meursault Premiers Crus, Rougeots and Perrières, are among the most sought-after wines in the world. Production is so limited that bottles are snapped up the moment they are released.

Domaine des Comtes Lafon: The absolute reference

Dominique Lafon is regarded as the foremost producer of Meursault. His estate possesses the deepest and coldest cellars in Burgundy, allowing for slow aging on lees of incomparable finesse. His Premiers Crus — Perrières, Genevrières, Charmes — as well as his Clos de la Barre (village) are wines of a depth and balance that transcend decades with rare grace.

Domaine Jean-Marc Roulot: The pioneer of lieu-dits

The Roulot estate is today an absolute reference not only for its Premiers Crus but above all for having revolutionized the approach to village lieu-dits. Jean-Marc Roulot transformed Meursault Villages plots into single-parcel cuvées of remarkable identity and precision: Tillets, Luchets, Tesson, Meix-Chavaux have become references in their own right, sometimes sold at prices higher than certain Premiers Crus. Pure, mineral, taut style.

Domaine Arnaud Ente: The confidential hidden gem

Ultra-confidential production, wines regularly praised to the skies by international critics. Arnaud Ente practices meticulous viticulture and precise winemaking, yielding wines of striking depth and complexity. His Meursault La Sève du Clos (in magnum in particular) are collectible bottles whose rarity commands high prices. He releases his wines only at maturity, which explains the scarcity of recent vintages.

Domaine d'Auvenay: The genius of Lalou

Property of Lalou Bize-Leroy, sister of the iconic Domaine Leroy, the Domaine d'Auvenay produces wines through biodynamic farming on tiny but extraordinary plots. Robert Parker awarded it 5 stars in his Wine Buyer's Guide. According to international critics, including Robert Parker, the wines produced are "among the richest, most complex and best suited to aging of all white Burgundy." Its Meursault Premiers Crus, notably the Gouttes d'Or, are objects of devotion for enthusiasts worldwide.

Château de Meursault: The great historic estate

The largest estate in terms of surface area with 67 hectares certified in organic farming, Château de Meursault produces an impressive range: 38 different appellations including 20 Premiers Crus and 6 Grands Crus from neighboring appellations (Corton, Bâtard-Montrachet…). Its monopole Clos des Grands Charrons is one of the rare curiosities of the appellation. The estate is open to the public for visits and tastings, making it an ambassador for Meursault wine tourism as well.

The Premiers Crus of Meursault: the terroir hierarchy

Meursault has 19 Premiers Crus (climats), representing approximately 132 hectares of vines. Among them, six stand out for their reputation and consistent quality.

Premier Cru

Surface area

Character & aromatic profile

Les Perrières

~13.7 ha

The supreme Premier Cru of Meursault. Intense minerality, fine structure, great tension. Rivals the Grands Crus of Puligny. Cellar for 20–25+ years with the finest estates.

Les Genevrières

~16 ha

Great nobility, remarkable aromatic complexity (hazelnut, fresh butter, white flowers). Slightly less mineral than the Perrières but of accomplished finesse.

Les Charmes

~31 ha

The largest (23% of the vineyard in 1er Cru). Opulent and enveloping style, aromatic richness, accessible young. Quality varies greatly depending on the plot's location and the producer.

Les Gouttes d'Or

~5 ha

Rich and honeyed style, pear, peach and hazelnut cream. Dense and expressive in its youth, aging potential of 10–15 years. Reference: Domaine d'Auvenay.

Les Poruzots

~11 ha

Dense and expressive wines, more approachable than the Perrières. Gourmand fruitiness, beautiful amplitude. Terroir close to the village.

Les Bouchères

~5 ha

Close to Puligny-Montrachet, with a more elegant and taut style. Beautiful minerality and floral finesse. Often underestimated.

Les Santenots (white)

~11 ha

Particularity: produces red Volnay Premier Cru and white Meursault 1er Cru. Vinous and powerful style for the whites.

The Perrières exception: considered the "Premier among Premiers Crus" of Meursault. In the finest vintages, from the finest estates (Comtes Lafon, Coche-Dury, Roulot), a Meursault Perrières holds its own without blushing against a Chevalier-Montrachet or a Bâtard-Montrachet. A remarkably rare feat for a Premier Cru.

Village lieu-dits: the other face of Meursault

A distinctive feature of Meursault is the existence of unclassified village lieu-dit plots that sometimes produce wines of exceptional quality. Jean-Marc Roulot played a pioneering role in showcasing these often-overlooked terroirs.

• Les Tillets: at altitude, above the Genevrières. Taut, lemony, mouth-watering style. Has become a benchmark at Roulot.

• Les Narvaux: elevated position above the Genevrières. Fresh, floral wines, sometimes with a minerality close to the finest Premiers Crus.

• Les Luchets: fruity and floral style, beautifully accessible. A classic from the Roulot estate.

• Le Tesson: close to the village, aromatic richness and roundness. A fine expression of opulent Meursault.

• Les Vireuils, Les Chevalières, Clos de la Barre (Comtes Lafon): so many lieu-dits that contribute to the richness and diversity of the village appellation.

How to taste and pair a Meursault?

Serving temperature

Serve your Meursault between 12 and 14°C. Too cold (below 10°C), the wine closes up and its complex aromas disappear. Too warm, the alcohol takes over and the wine loses its freshness and tension. For older vintages or Premiers Crus, a slight increase to 13–14°C allows the tertiary aromas to open up.

Decanting for older vintages

An aged Meursault (10 years and older) may benefit from a very brief decanting (10–15 minutes maximum) to dispel any slight sulfur and allow it to open up. Avoid decanting for too long, as older white wines are fragile and can tire quickly.

Food and wine pairings

• Noble fish in creamy sauce: turbot, John Dory, monkfish à l'armoricaine — the timeless classic pairing

• Shellfish and seafood: lobster, spiny lobster, grilled prawns, scallops

Foie gras pan-fried or in terrine (slightly evolved village wines)

• Blue-veined cheeses: Roquefort, Bleu de Bresse

• Pungent cheeses: Époisses de Bourgogne (washed rind), Langres

• Poultry in white sauce: Bresse chicken with cream, pike quenelles with beurre blanc

• Aged Meursault with white or black truffles, aged Parmesan, prestige pairings
