A Grand Cru from Pommard soon?

The INAO (National Institute of Origin and Quality) has had in hand, since autumn 2013, the file concerning the project to classify the Rugiens and Epenots parcels in Premier Cru at Pommard as Grand Cru appellation.

A historic project

Following historical, economic and geo-pedological studies conducted by the Terroir Study and Monitoring Group, "research has highlighted that these parcels have always been identified as the best of the Pommard AOC in the various classifications established over the past 250 years" notes Aubert Lefas, winemaker heading the commission leading the project.

From an economic standpoint, studies show that the prices of these wines are significantly higher than those of other Premiers Crus of Pommard, which would justify the producers' request.

However, this project faces numerous oppositions, particularly from the Union des Grands Crus. Detractors fear a decline in excellence linked to the arrival of new members.

A similar project has been evolving at the same time since June 2013 for the Premier Cru Les Saints Georges at Nuits Saint Georges. Initiated by Grégory Gouges and Thibault Liger-Belair, it would be, according to Laurent Giotti, about "correcting an oversight of History".

While these projects will likely lead to the appearance of new Grands Crus for these appellations, nothing is certain yet.

The saga continues, stay tuned for the next episode.
