Domaine Schoffit is a reference estate in Alsace, based in Colmar and world-renowned for its wines from the Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, the only volcanic terroir in the region. Across approximately 17 hectares farmed with extreme care and a great deal of manual work, the Schoffit family, today led by Alexandre, produces wines that are straight, pure and expressive, with balance as their guiding principle. Its jewel, the Clos Saint-Théobald, a monopole at the heart of the Rangen, yields Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Muscat among the finest in Alsace, complemented by a range from the lieu-dit Harth and the Grand Cru Sommerberg.
The history of Domaine Schoffit begins around Colmar, where Robert Schoffit founded the family estate on about ten hectares, primarily on the lieu-dit of La Harth. It was, however, his son Bernard Schoffit who would give the estate its standing as a great Alsatian vineyard. Still very young, and after years of negotiation, Bernard embarked from 1986 on an ambitious programme of acquiring plots in the Grand Cru Rangen, in Thann, at the southernmost tip of the Wine Route.
At the heart of this terroir, he patiently restored the Clos Saint-Théobald, much of which had been abandoned due to the vertiginous steepness of its slopes. Through his determination, he breathed new life into these hillsides and made them the jewel of the estate, earning the domaine numerous accolades and international renown. Today, it is Alexandre Schoffit who embodies the new generation at the helm of the estate, with a surface area of around 17 hectares and an approach that is ever more respectful of living systems, in organic farming.
The estate draws its richness from three terroirs of strongly contrasting personalities. Around Colmar, the lieu-dit Harth offers a sandy, highly draining plain pebble soil covered in loess, benefiting from a warm and dry microclimate ideal for expressive varietal wines. In Niedermorschwihr, the Grand Cru Sommerberg unfolds its granite soils over steep south-facing slopes, a preferred terroir for chiselled and mineral Rieslings.
The pinnacle remains the Grand Cru Rangen, in Thann, Alsace's only volcanic terroir. Its stony, dark and warm soils of volcano-sedimentary origin, and its vertiginous slopes, provide a wonderful home for Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Within this cru, the Clos Saint-Théobald constitutes the estate's monopole. Convinced that quality is determined above all in the vineyard, Domaine Schoffit works there almost entirely by hand, targets low yields and harvests healthy, concentrated grapes at full ripeness.
In the cellar, the philosophy is one of respecting the fruit and pursuing complete phenolic ripeness for each variety. The grapes are pressed as whole bunches, slowly and gently, then the musts are cold-clarified before fermentation. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally for the majority of the wines, and ageing continues on fine lees until bottling, with carefully controlled sulphur doses.
This approach yields balanced, precise and remarkably pure wines, capable of faithfully expressing each terroir. Domaine Schoffit also excels in sweet and late-harvest wines: the Pinot Gris from the Rangen allows for the production of Vendanges Tardives and Sélections de Grains Nobles almost every year, with residual sugars elegantly enlivened by acidity, resulting in exceptional wines for ageing.
