History of Domaine Daniel Bouland

The Bouland family’s winegrowing history spans more than six generations and nearly a century of vine cultivation in Beaujolais. The family’s first vines were planted as early as 1920, laying the foundations for a living heritage that would endure through the century. Daniel Bouland inherited the estate following its division with his brother Raymond, also a winemaker based in Villié-Morgon. The brothers regularly work together, particularly during harvest, carrying on the family spirit of solidarity. Daniel’s property today is concentrated mainly around the hamlet of Corcelette, the terroir that has become the beating heart of the estate.

In 2014, Daniel took over several additional plots in Corcelette, bringing the total area to approximately eight hectares. Although rooted in a legacy of conventional viticulture from which he has not been able to break entirely, Daniel remains exceptionally close to his vines and never counts the hours he works. He farms three hectares without a tractor because of the steep slopes or the density of the very old bush vines. Tireless but anxious and initially reserved, Daniel gradually opens up when welcoming visitors to his cellar and becomes so engaging that it is hard to leave. With space tight in his historic buildings, he developed plans for a new winery to gain storage space. A skilled winemaker, Daniel makes great wines with modest means and remarkably gentle prices. It is tempting to think that, with more resources and higher prices, this estate would undoubtedly rank among the top three in all of Beaujolais.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Daniel Bouland

Daniel Bouland’s vineyards span several exceptional terroirs in Beaujolais. The heart of the estate lies in Corcelette, between Villié-Morgon and Chiroubles, where Daniel now farms nearly six hectares, accounting for 75 percent of total production. These plots have sandy soils with stones that vary greatly in number and size, mixed with a substantial proportion of fine particles. The estate has an exceptional stock of old, bush-trained vines. The youngest vines, planted by Daniel himself between 1985 and 1987, occupy the most structurally sound plots. The rest of the vineyard includes very old, gnarled vines that make tractor access impossible; the oldest vines, in the Delys climat, date to 1926. Exposure varies from plot to plot, but the gentle slopes give the vines optimal sunshine throughout the day. Generally warm and windy, this is a relatively early-ripening terroir that produces concentrated grapes. Daniel also owns vines in Douby, Morgon: a 35-are plot neighboring Domaine Desvignes, planted with 60-year-old vines.

In Chiroubles, 70 ares are cultivated on a very steep slope (40 percent), where shallow, highly sandy soils lie over bedrock. The vines are at least 50 years old and face northeast. This late-ripening terroir produces lighter wines, though in some vintages Daniel makes a wine with excellent staying power. On Mont Brouilly, 50 ares for Côte de Brouilly are ideally located in one of the appellation’s finest areas. All these plots are meticulously tended by hand and have been certified organic since 2012, reflecting the winemaker’s commitment to respecting the vines, grapes and environment.

Winemaking at Domaine Daniel Bouland

Daniel Bouland’s winemaking philosophy favors the pure, authentic expression of terroir and vintage, with minimal intervention and absolute respect for the fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and meticulously sorted to retain only the finest bunches. Whole-cluster fermentation, a traditional Beaujolais technique, preserves Gamay’s characteristic fruit freshness and aromatic finesse. Maceration lasts 10 to 12 days, depending on the cuvée and vintage, allowing a gentle, gradual extraction of tannins, color and aromas. Unlike some Beaujolais producers who overuse carbonic maceration, Daniel seeks balance and elegance rather than excessive power. Aging varies by cuvée. Wines from sandy terroirs are generally aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve their freshness and immediate fruit character.

The old-vine cuvées from stony terroirs are aged in 50-hectoliter oak foudres, gaining structure, complexity and aging potential without excessive oak masking the fruit. Some plots are aged in epoxy-lined concrete tanks, which allow natural micro-oxygenation that supports the wine’s harmonious development. Daniel neither filters nor fines his wines excessively, preserving their authenticity and integrity. Yields are kept around 50 hectoliters per hectare, allowing each terroir to be vinified separately and the nuances of every plot to be expressed precisely. The house style is defined by finesse, floral elegance, menthol freshness and supple tannins that lend an incomparable silkiness. Rather than seeking sheer power, it favors precision of expression and harmony of flavors.

The Cuvées of Domaine Daniel Bouland

Beaujolais Blanc is the estate’s only white wine, a small-production cuvée made from Chardonnay grown on a few ares. This rare wine offers the freshness, minerality and aromatic purity typical of Beaujolais whites. Beaujolais Villages is the estate’s entry-level wine, a fruity, generous red from younger plots that offers an immediate expression of Gamay: a purplish-ruby color, aromas of fresh red fruit and a round palate with supple tannins. Perfect for enjoying with friends within two to three years.

Chiroubles comes from 70 ares of vines planted on steep slopes with very sandy soils. The wine reflects the appellation’s typically airy, delicate character, with a light color, an intense floral nose evoking violet and peony, and a light but structured palate driven by lively acidity and fine tannins. Though generally lighter, in some vintages Daniel makes wines with impressive staying power that can develop harmoniously for five to ten years. Morgon Pré Jourdan, from the 35-are Douby plot neighboring Domaine Desvignes, offers an immediately appealing, generous Morgon with ample body. It retains Douby’s approachable character without aspiring to age for decades. Simple and enjoyable, it is best drunk within three to five years.

Morgon Bellevue Sables, acquired in 2014, comes from 35-year-old vines planted in sandy terroir on Viala rootstock. Medium-bodied, it has fine tannins, a surprisingly ethereal character and an elegant structure. Morgon Corcelette is the estate’s signature cuvée, made from 50-year-old vines grown in the historic heart of the property. This wine reveals a purplish-garnet color and a fresh, expressive nose reminiscent of the finest young wines, with fruity and floral notes. The palate is precise, powerful and lively, awakening all the senses. It has impressive density yet great poise, with tannins that soften beautifully after a few hours of aeration or a few years in the cellar. An ideal balance promises great pleasure, and the wine can develop for 10 to 15 years.

Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Sables comes from several small plots of old vines on sandy terroir, grafted onto 420A rootstock. It brings together everything that makes Daniel’s wines among Morgon’s finest: finesse, floral elegance on the nose, menthol freshness and rounded tannins that create incomparable silkiness. Rather than relying on power, it prizes precision of expression and harmony of flavors. Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Cailloux, aged in a 50-hectoliter foudre, comes from vines planted in 1927 on stony terroir. Its superb fruity, floral nose evokes cherry pits, dried flowers and sweet spices. The palate has fine, precise tannins and great elegance, with substantial yet taut fruit in a delicate floral style. A long finish points to excellent aging potential of 15 to 20 years.

Morgon Vieilles Vignes, a blend from 60-year-old vines, has a nose similar to Corcelette’s but more mineral and intensely expressive. The attack is precise, powerful and lively, with impressive density and poise. A few grams of residual sugar add a touch of richness that rounds out the dense, elegant tannins. At this youthful stage, texture takes precedence over flavor. Tightly knit, the wine has a fresh, long finish marked by an herbal undertone and slight bitterness. It has a bright future but needs five to ten years of patience before reaching its peak.

Morgon Les Delys is the pinnacle of the estate’s production, a pure concentration of old Gamay vines planted in 1926 in the Corcelette area. Highly aromatic, it shows the character of ripe whole clusters, with magnificent velvety tannins and a distinctive profile evoking elderberry, iron filings and dried flowers (rose and potpourri), all with irresistible appeal. Freshness and purity shine through. Extraordinary depth brings a kaleidoscope of aromas: black fruit, wild blackberry, a hint of smoked bacon and subtle oak. The multidimensional palate delivers rich, silky, flowing fruit and captivating, rounded tannins. A complete fine wine whose freshness and density dazzle; an absolute delight. Complex aromas reveal blackcurrant and black raspberry, distilled-berry notes, and saline, alkaline, maritime, stony and crystalline minerality, alongside appetizing suggestions of roast meat juices and soy. Mouthwatering and richly textured, the palate remains lively and refreshing. Its fleshy depth combines deliciously with its textural appeal, offset by fresh fruit acidity and vibrant mineral notes. This unmissable favorite can age beautifully for 20 years and stands comparison with Burgundy’s finest Côte de Nuits wines.

Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Mélanie, named after Daniel’s daughter, comes from 50 ares ideally situated in one of the finest parts of Mont Brouilly. Pure pleasure: a fine, lightly extracted wine with aromas of black cherry and sour cherry and intense freshness. The minerality of the blue stones, a hallmark of Côte de Brouilly’s soils, sets the tone. Perfectly ripe, pure and precise, it bears the unmistakable touch of the meticulous Daniel Bouland. Rare and not widely available in France, this wine is one of the best buys currently available to lovers of elegant, distinguished Beaujolais.
