Château La Violette is a very small estate in the Pomerol appellation, on the right bank of the Bordeaux wine region, and one of the most exclusive and sought-after crus in the area. Ideally located on the heights of the Pomerol plateau, between Châteaux Trotanoy and Le Pin, it produces a rare wine made exclusively from Merlot. The estate takes its name from the delicate violet fragrance that characterizes its wines, which are of remarkable elegance and depth.
Created in the 1950s, Château La Violette owes its name to the exquisite violet fragrance that has always captivated the most discerning palates. Its recent history is intimately linked to Catherine Péré-Vergé, a passionate figure of Pomerol. Having established herself in the appellation as early as 1985 with Château Montviel, then Château Le Gay, a neighbour of Petrus, she acquired Château La Violette in the mid-2000s and brought this cru to the very top. Oenologist Michel Rolland then described this terroir as a true "Holy of Holies."
From its very first vintage under this stewardship, in 2006, the wine established its personality: richly aromatic, opulent and generous, endowed with ultra-fine tannins. Since the passing of Catherine Péré-Vergé in 2013, Château La Violette has remained the property of Vignobles Péré-Vergé and is directed by Henri Parent, who perpetuates this demanding and quality-driven vision. Vinifications continue to be supervised by Michel Rolland, a guarantee of a permanent pursuit of excellence.
Château La Violette enjoys one of the most enviable positions in Pomerol, on the heights of the plateau, between the prestigious Châteaux Trotanoy and Le Pin. The estate covers just a few hectares, making it one of the most intimate and rarest vineyards in the appellation. The terroir, of exceptional quality, combines clay-limestone soils and fine gravel with a subsoil of crasse de fer — the signature of the Pomerol plateau — which imparts to the wines their particular depth and intensity.
The vineyard is planted exclusively with merlot, the king grape of Pomerol, on old vines averaging around forty years of age. Like Petrus, Château La Violette is thus a pure merlot Pomerol, expressing the full finesse, body and fruit of this grape variety on this exceptional terroir. Yields are extremely low, a guarantee of the wines' formidable concentration.
Château La Violette is crafted according to a highly rigorous protocol, marked by extreme attention to detail. The harvest, gathered by hand, undergoes manual destemming, berry by berry. A cold pre-fermentation maceration, at around 6 °C for approximately two weeks, precedes the fermentations.
Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place directly in new barrels, through parcel-by-parcel micro-vinifications that are subsequently blended with the greatest care. Conducted under the supervision of Michel Rolland, this vinification imparts to the wine a smooth and opulent texture, a remarkable presence and a unique character. The result is a rare, deep Pomerol built for long ageing.
Château La Violette (Pomerol, red) is the estate's unique and emblematic cuvée, crafted from 100% merlot. True to its name, it displays a nose of great aromatic richness, dominated by a characteristic violet fragrance, accompanied by ripe dark fruits and spices. The palate, opulent and generous, captivates with its smooth and velvety texture, its depth and its exceptionally fine tannins.
Produced in very small quantities, this pure merlot Pomerol ranks among the rarest and most sought-after wines of the appellation. Endowed with a remarkable ageing potential, it gains in complexity over time and pairs ideally with red meats, game, duck and aged cheeses. Château La Violette stands alongside the other crus of Vignobles Péré-Vergé, such as Château Le Gay, as one of the great signatures of the Right Bank.
